Shama: U to priortize diversity in search

You are a fool. As it sets today; not counting trainers and video geeks, the FB staff is 35% minority. How does that compare to the faculty/employee base at the U, other sports and the population of the state?

No, it is you who are the FOOL sir if you really think those stats are even relevant to the specific issues raised.

I frankly do not see why your being white has anything to do with the discussion on this thread. Why do you feel like a victim here? It almost seems like you cut and pasted your comments from another thread. Please know that I wish that you share your opinions here freely. And whether you are actually white or not really does not matter. Love, Peace and Happiness Bro.

Well, one of the precepts of white privilege (at least according to the version espoused by Charles Mills) is that white people will never truly understand the benefits they receive simply from being white. White epistemology is a different construct than non-white epistemology, such that a white person can never comment with any true knowledge on the experiences of being a non-white person. Understanding and material knowledge of "the other," then, are impossible. Consequently, whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must remain silent.

It's really just an extension of Marxist epistemological tenets. But it does put white people in the uncomfortable position of being called ignorant about all things non-white. I think that was partly the point of the method applied by Mills: challenge the traditional power dynamic to put white people in the inferior position. With that said, there is merit to Mills' viewpoint. I, as a white person, will never know what it's like to wonder if I got a job only because of my skin color and I won't know what it's like to go to Target and try and find Band Aids that match my skin color.

I think that's where Monk was coming from, Stargenes. Just my take.

It won't matter what color our skin is when this happens!

Do you think it will help Horton's resume to have to say he was the interim head coach at Minnesota. Given the constraints of timing, practice availability, sensitivity to seniors, weighing the responsibility to the future, depression, and an avalanche of negative issues...I'm not too sure anybody raises their hand and says "Please, give me the opportunity to be the Gopher interim coach."

If the timing was two weeks before the season....now it is an opportunity to clamor for. But, I don't see the Gopher situation as one that would have helped someone's resume.

Could someone have done better than Horton? Likely so, but highly unlikely they become a serious candidate for the permanent job given the circumstances.

My point: maybe the minority guys were bright enough to turn it down or Maturi looked at Horton's losing streak and said, "We got the perfect man for the job."

Your analysis is a bit naive. An opportunity to serve as a head coach at a Big Time Big Ten Program is an outstanding opportunity no matter what the circumstance. And if you even think that any of these minority coaches would have turned it down, you are mistaken. I, of course have not asked them but am almost certain that Coaches Cross, Lee and Hammock would have accepted the role without question. I frankly, believe it was a slight to Coach Cross when he was passed over for the promotion. He lost a six game audition for not only The U job, which would be less likely an option, but also multiple other coordinator and HC jobs throughout the NCAA. It would have given him an advanced management feather in his cap for interviews. While the Brewster staff appeared very diverse, the way responsibilities were distributed significantly limits the minority coaches options after he got bought out.

In a nutshell, OPPORTUNITY DENIED.

Horton was a D1 head coach prior, I'm thinking that is why he got the promotion.

sorry to all, that was an overwhelmingly large photo, i hope your computers do not crash.

Yes, because if you needed heart surgery, you would select the minority beginner over the guy with experience simply to "give him an opportunity" wouldn't you?

I am sure that was the excuse but he was not good at all. Giving Cross the opportunity would have been appropriate.

Winning was out the window, which is why they fired Brew in the first place. I'm guessing that because he had previous experience with media expectations and the administrative aspects of being a head coach he got the job.

shhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........that idea interferes with stargene's "sheet in every closet" at the U theory!

Derp.

There's a monumental difference between pointing out a situation where blacks aren't in a position to be elevated to the top job and accusing an entire university of being Klan members. Jebus....

Not to pick nits or anything but I don't see any non-white people in that picture, clearly an indication that skin color may matter in this scenario!

the guy with the 8 on his back seems to have a darker skin tone. If that is the case not only is the man with the darker skin tone dead, he also appears to have a number on his back, as if he is some sort of athlete, thus doing more to enforce color based stereotypes.

i lose, worst picture ever

Maybe they played spin the bottle and it just happened to point to Horton.

And who's to say all the non-whites weren't eaten earlier because they taste better? Maybe this is a white colony akin to the small pile of turnips left on your plate after eating a porterhouse.

Funny stuff!

So Adam Weber was the first to die, some leader. Do you think he did the spin move before they got him?

I am sure that was the excuse but he was not good at all. Giving Cross the opportunity would have been appropriate.

According to who and for what reason would it have been more appropriate than giving it to Horton?

don't care who gets eaten first
don't care who tastes best
don't care much about anything with respect to Gopher football other than

Year 1: Best team in MN, ND, SD
Year 3: Best team in our BT Division
Year 5: Best team in the BT
Year 7: Best team

all i want is the guy to carry out all the annoying details to do this. don't care how he tastes. geesh how hard can this be? nearly every year some coach wins a NC

and in Year 7, everybody will taste good, utopia

that said, absolutely no tap outs!

How did the machines know what Tasty Wheat tasted like. huh? Maybe they got it wrong. Maybe what I think Tasty Wheat tasted like actually tasted like oatmeal or tuna fish. That makes you wonder about a lot of things. You take chicken for example, maybe they couldn't figure out what to make chicken taste like, which is why chicken tastes like everything.

There are some years when no coach wins a NC?

Based on what? That he's African-American? There's not much else that qualifies him. Have you watched the Gopher defensive line (the unit he's responsible for) play during his tenure here? Yikes!

My point of preference resides in your question. It is who I say it is; end of discussion.

OPPORTUNITY DENIED

I don't like this article at a time like this because it will make some people believe that if the U hires a Sumlin or Shannon that it was done in the name of diversity above qualifications.

Exactly. It's just entirely unnecessary, and that would be very unfair if that type of perception were to tarnish say for instance a Sumlin hiring. If he's hired, then great. I'm assuming they hired him because he's the best possible guy.....but then this diversity stuff comes out, and if we hired him now, then people would be wondering if that were part of the reason why.

It's just dumb, being politically correct for the sake of being politically correct, and I don't know why the U insists on doing these things. There was never a hint of race in this search process, and now they've opened up that whole can of worms themselves. It's very frustrating as a fan to sit back and watch them do things like this.

And Horton have been lighting the place up. Yeah OK. Cross was the Associate Head Coach. Next man up is how I see it. I am certain you are not suggesting Horton's resume demanded that he get the opportunity. It probably came down to who was the next highest paid staffmember. Man, I can't wait to get this year over with and get a fresh new start. The players do not deserve this mess.
