Shama: Roger Schipper will not return as U trainer; been here for 28 years

Christ, you'd think with the way some people rave about this guy. How many of these people who are furious at Pitino do you think are the same ones who were moaning about how weak Rodney, or Ralph, Damien, or Elliot, or Mo were?

Not arguing a whole lot with your overall point, but the fitness of the players would be the S&C coach whom Pitino replaced right away. Trainer does more with injuries, taping, treatment, etc.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info, I guess I was not aware of that.

Actually, I think the athletic training staff is a separate department and trainers are assigned to teams from there. Many/most are trainers for more than one team. Schipper has also been working with the golf team.

Schipper may have been reassigned and not fired. If he has been fired, it seems unlikely to me that it was not without cause.

If that is the case, and he was fired, have to imagine Norwood was on board with it as well. Not sure Pitino has the authority on his own to do that. He could probably request Norwood allow him a different trainer if he wanted.

Especially since we seem to be hearing only one side of this story. Which is Pitino is an evil dictator who will have the wrath of the world down upon him as he cruelly and unjustly fired an employee for no reason than to please himself for a few moments.

Schipper is not jobless - Charley Walters tweeted that he has been re-assigned to mens and womens tennis.

This is very normal for a new coach to bring in all of his own people - with that being said, I wish Roger the best. I've heard nothing but good things. I actually sprained my ankle really badly on Selection Sunday, the 1st year Tubby got us into the tourney. Roger requested to see me, checked out my ankle, gave me his diagnosis and sent me away with ice and crutches. Great guy. He would be an asset to many programs!

No offense, but no one on the board understands at all whether Roger is still good at his job or not, especially me. Things change, being competent 20 years ago and being competent now are different in a lot of fields. further, I have seen nothing from Pitino that says he is indifferent to people issues.
We have talked like we want the Administration to run this ship like results count. Maturi ran it like a High School program. Pitino is the one who gets fired if the trainer is not good at his job. No one is owed a job because they have been there forever. I don't enjoy this part of the process, but Pitino should have someone he believes in.
I JKill did not believe in his trainer, he would change in a heart beat, and so would Flip, or anyone else being held accountable by today's standards.

Doing what every coach in America has the right to do? Wrong. You need to learn the difference between support staff and coaching staff. The support staff is hired by the athletic department and consists of the athletic trainer, strength and conditioning coordinator, video coordinator, executive assistants, assistant to the recruiting coordinator, etc.

It is absolutely the norm to replace the coaching staff, but not a support staff. Lets count who Pitino has either fired or pushed out the door on the support staff...
Roger Schipper - trainer
Bryan Bender - video coordinator
Emily sherels - assistant to the recruiting coordinator

Barnyard, sounds like your dad had a similar relationship to Roger as I did. He was the constant between many of the generations of gopher basketball, and the first person I made it a point to catch up with when I made it back. Hard for alumni to get excited about a program when they see stuff like this happen.

This is not normal. Like someone said earlier, what goes around...

I am confused-- on one hand you say the support staff is not hired by the head coach but by the Athletic Department-- yet you say they are fired or pushed out by the head coach? which is it?

GL was in such pain, that she doesn't even remember that I WAS HER ICE AND CRUTCHES!!! :)

Looks like the U needs to update their Trainer bios...I see a Brewster reference under Ed.

If he is still gainfully employed, then all of the innuendo and hand wringing on this post is completely premature and idiotic

per Sid:

• After 28 years as Gophers basketball trainer — a career that spanned seven head coaches — Roger Schipper has been replaced by new basketball coach Richard Pitino. Schipper was a popular and efficient trainer, who remained friends with many former players. The end result might be that those former players will decide not to contribute to the funds for building a practice facility for Gophers basketball. Apparently, Schipper has been given the choice of training the U tennis team this year or taking severance pay. If the number of phone calls from former basketball players who were upset by Pitino’s move is any measure, this was not a popular decision.

Go Gophers!!

Oops! I thought Norwood hired a PR guy to ease things like this over after the North Carolina fiasco.

Because the Gophers have so many former players who had lavish NBA careers waiting to donate to the practice facility ...

Unless the upset player(s) were Thompson, McHale, or Humphries I don't think a donation was really in the cards anyways. It will come from a corporation or super wealthy alumni (Denny) - not a former player.

Odd conclusion to draw from this.

Still don't understand the outrage over this. He wasn't fired, his finances are not cut off, he is a 28 year vet being replaced by a brand new coaching staff. It happens.

This sounds like an even sadder version of savegopherfootball.com.

Schipper was probably one of Sid's close personal friends and maybe a source for Sid back when he wrote his own column. So Sid had to take a cheap shot at RP. I guess all those former players must have Sid on speed dial.

Word is that AJ Barker's mom's BFF also will not contribute because of this miscarriage of justice.

Hopefully HC Richard Pitino isn't becoming Lane Kiffin 2.0

Young men who got their coaching opportunities because of their successful fathers - but were in over their heads and PR nightmares.

Maybe Lane is over matched at USC, but he didn't become an NFL coach and the head coach at two major BCS teams only because of his name. He isn't doing well at USC at all, but he does have some merit on his own.

Lane's issue is that he's soft on players and not a great play caller or decision making. No one has ever said either of those things about Richard to this point. They've said pretty much the opposite.

Lastly, I'm not sure replacing a trainer that many liked is really a PR nightmare. Kicking basketballs at players or throwing chairs across the court are PR nightmares.

Maybe Isiah Whitehead will include in his decision that he was going to choose Minnesota until Richard replaced the trainer. That really got him PO'd.

Not sure why it is even an issue, a coach has to have the ability to hire his staff, with the U finding an alternative position for Schipper it should be a win/win for all involved.

Same scenerio in a private corporation, wouldn't even be questioned.
