per Shama:

P.J. Fleck—the young Western Michigan coach who has the undefeated Mid-American Conference Broncos ranked No. 14 by the Associated Press—quietly has his name mentioned by Gophers boosters as a future coach. Fleck is a media favorite who last week was featured by the New York Times and this week was written up by the Washington Post. Other national media coverage has come from Sports Illustrated and Forbes.com.

Go Gophers!!

I think there are brighter lights up ahead for Mr Fleck.....LSU, Texas, maybe ND....

"quietly has his name mentioned"

What does that even mean?

Yes, because we're 7-2 and in first place in our division. So why wouldn't we be shopping for a new coach?

I think I heard that Fleck would likely stay in Midwest because he has children in Illinois or Indiana. Maybe Notre Dame and Purdue could be in his future. Interesting that someone went on the record about the job. Probably wishful thinking or just speculating.

When the gophers win a couple more games his year, this will finally be put to rest. TC is not going anywhere

I've said it before, but not sure he will make as big a jump as others think. Kiffin may never be a HC again because of how he handled a couple stops.

I think Purdue is a real option and potential MN if a change is made (Looking less likely).

As I also mentioned before, my home run would be to hire Fleck as HC and keep Claeys and some of the defensive staff.

Really, people need to stop posting Shama articles on here. He's Doogie level.

Claeys to Kansas State is being quietly whispered among K-State fans.

One thing Claeys needs to stop immediately is whining publicly for an extension. He did it twice this week - on his Gopher show on KFAN and to the Pioneer Press. He uses it as an answer to avoid a question he doesn't like. It's transparently selfish, mostly because of the choppy and poorly spoken way he brings it up, and it's unbecoming of a coach. It seems indicative of his overall character, but mostly, he just comes off like a whiny mingus.

My question is when said people quietly mention Fleck's name, is it kind of like the voice in Field of Dreams, where they just quietly say "P.J. Fleck, P.J. Fleck" over and over? Or do the boosters walk up behind Regents and whisper "P.J. Fleck" in their ears? Or maybe its Kevin Nealon stand-up style where the boosters insert P.J. Fleck in hushed undertones in the middle of an otherwise separate conversation.

Go Gophers!!

For those that didn't hear it, what exactly did he say?

PJ Fleck worked with Coach Kill's staff for a short time at NIU. He is a COMPLETELY different personality than what has been here.

The horror. Obviously he was asked about it and said that he enjoys being here and it would certainly help recruiting if we made a commitment to him. Given the near daily calls on this site for him to be fired, often mentioning his buyout, this doesn't sound like whining at all, actually seems pretty tame. Indicative of his character? he stayed here as DC when he had plenty of other opportunities. I'd say his character seems pretty dang high.
Transparently selfish? You just want a different coach. (not in response to gophers in iowa)

Also looking at Sam's past posts, he has only predicted the gophers to lose (often in blowout fashion)

He's a greenhorn mid major coach with basically a .500 record.

Right, everyone should just wait, including the AD. If we end up 7-5 and get handled by WI etc. we shouldn't be prepared. We should just get caught with our pants down and hire Tim Brewster. Why haven't other smart people thought of that? hmmmmm

PJ has been mentioned quite regularly on Gopherhole since Kill's departure. It's taken 9 wins in 2016 for Boosters to quietly whisper his name. Creative and investigative reporting at its best.

Screw it. Can Claeys now. Why give a whole season?. Smh

I've heard some whispers about Nick Saban too. He knows a few people in Minnesota.

You are right, I have mostly predicted losses. This has been a losing program for sometime. I root for the Gophs but i think we have to speak honestly about what this program has been, in record and via the eye, both past and present.

You can find the Gopher podcast on KFAN's fan on demand podcast dropown. I'm sorry I can't link from current device.

It's possible that a coach in these circumstances requesting an extension during media interviews would be appropriate and well-received. But through Claeys this comes off as clumsy and lame.

He is still an unproven coach leftover from an unproven previous staff. There is no demand for Tracy Claeys. There is no reason to rush for an extension with two years of contract remaining.

The way he sloppily brings this up when asked about recruiting is just unlikable. We have to be candid - Tracy Claeys has very low charisma. In the KFAN interview, he shoulders his extension request with choppy ums and ahs and such. This will get picked apart here, but the dude sounds like a straight Mingus. This is more important than many are understanding. The media, parents, recruits, and players all notice this. When paired with his lack of sideline presence this flaw is amplified.

More than anything, in 16 games Tracy Claeys has committed some egregious coaching gaffes. There were several before the Purdue pick last week. There have been times where we have been severely outcoached, and our pre-snap penalties just this year are jarring. This is not a head coaches resume.

He doesn't have outside head coaching experience, no P5 conference assistant experience outside of the Gophs, and never played high-level football himself.

So when a doofy unproven coach starts softly requesting an extension during interviews, it's a turn off for me.

If Claeys can commit such horrendous mistakes and be out-coached, and still win 7 out of 9 games, then he should continue to be the Gophers head coach. I agree that TC may have the charisma of a toad in public events .... but he is getting the job done. And I value that more than a used car salesman (aka Brewster) who can't coach nor run a P5 program.
