Shama: Medved Expects ‘Large Number’ of Returnees to Gophers

I think Ben did the "wait for the end of the season and say" what's next"? method...
Of course it is. Keeping track of guys you recruited before, scouting opposing players, and paying attention to current needs all the time. There’s no way they can do the evaluation in a couple of weeks. Tripply important for systems and culture programs like Nikos.

Look at Nolan Groves from Orono who signed with Texas Tech last year. Niko came in and went after him hard at the wire (as did Wisconsin), but to no avail. Rumor has it Groves has moved home to Minnesota, will enter the portal & would like to be a Gopher...or Badger. In the portal era 2nd place on the recruiting trail matters.

Niko's right too. The portal never closes. We may not make contact directly with a player like Groves, but there are agents, AAU coaches, parents who act as intermediaries.

IF Willis' inclusion on the traveling roster signals his probable return for next year, I trust the staff that he will be a good contributor. He was having his issues before he was hurt. If instead he decides to bolt, I think we could find someone just as good or better.

Reynolds, Crocker-Johnson and Durkin were also struggling at the same time. Clear that there was an adjustment period. Look forward to having Willis back.

People make fun of the "one of us" angle in recruiting transfers etc. What that position ignores is that we can oftentimes sign players for cheaper/garner interest from players who would otherwise not have any interest in us. Guys like Dawson Garcia who ended up being a cornerstone player for years.

I like the Niko was recruiting Nolan Groves hard last year. It looks like he had a very bad freshman year at Texas Tech. I remember from watching his highlight videos that he seemed like a Langston Reynolds type -- very strong and physical guard who initiated contact on the drive.

I also remember perusing his Twitter account and thinking he seemed very self absorbed. He was a HS kid though so this is not unusual and it's very possible he has matured.

I will be curious to see if Niko is interested in him and Kyan Evans, guys who spurned him but may now want to sign up for a lower price than the bag they got from UNC/TT.

If Bobby Durkin was hurt in November like Chansey Willis, his season stat line would look like this:
33% FG, 30% 3PT, 78% FT.

Instead he had a 44% FG, 40% 3PT, 87.5% FT.

What would the buzz on the board be about Bobby if he had been injured at a similar time?

My concern is Willis did not look like a great shooter at Western Michigan either (42% FG, 28% 3PT, respectable 72% FT). His start to the year here was abysmal, shooting 18% from 3PT and 46% FT. I remember Ryan James really liked how he defended when he scouted him, but I did not watch enough of the non-conference to see how he did as a defender.

For the record, Bobby actually improved on his historical averages from Davidson when he moved up to the B10 (he shot 34% and 36% from 3PT, 37% and 41% FG, and 86% and 85% from FT).

I know he doesn’t score at all 3 levels like Tyson but I think he will take another step next year. I think him, Asuma, and JCJ all have similar chances of being our leading scorer. I think most likely they all end up averaging 12-15 PPG, and Willis and a transfer wing soak up the scoring punch from Reynolds/Tyson.

Hearing Parker Fox on the fan this morning say ‘Rob Dillingham is terrible.’ Cmon PFox, you were a d2 player on the worst gopher team in 100 years. Get a clue and get some class.

I'm guessing there is probably some personal beef and they ran into each other somewhere.

That being said, at 6'2" 175 pounds and not being a shooter, to be in the nba is impressive
