Shama: Contract Extension for P.J. Fleck Reportedly in the Works

PJ didn’t have to re build the cupboard was far from bare. He had no QB that obviously hurt but the foundation for ‘19 was here when he arrived. He deserves credit for keeping them all here, most notably AW Junior, but there was no rebuild.
He put in a different offense and defense. He had a lot of young talent. Not sure that is defined as a foundation. He took over a good young class and complimented it with his own kids from W. Michigan. It was rebuilt.

Would you rather be like Bucky and hire the wrong guy, and set the program back 5-7 years? Or continue with current consistance? Not a tough choice for me.
No thanks. Look at Indiana. They didn't 'stay pat' with mediocrity or settle for being a 'tough out.' They made a bold hire in Curt Cignetti, went all-in on NIL, and spent the money to get elite assistants. The result? A 16-0 season, a Big Ten title, and a National Championship. If a 'basketball school' like Indiana can stop making excuses and climb the mountain in two years, why should we be content with 7-5 and a contract extension? I’d rather the Gophers swing and miss on 10 coaches trying to find our Cignetti than sit comfortably in the middle of the pack forever. Consistency is just another word for standing still while the rest of the Big Ten passes you by.

That is fine, but most need to be updated to the market annually as it changes. Language like he much be at least the 10th highest paid, etc, etc.
Probably. To be clear, the extension would be continually adding the 5th year to the end, so it would extend it to 2030 etc. not adjust the 2026 salary. Every few years it would still be re-negotiated.

Do you have a Mark Cuban you can pull out of your ass??

May I ask why? I don't see any evidence of this. We don't pay our assistants well, we don't have big time donors, we are notoriously hard to recruit for. What PJ has done here is amazing.
PJ has done an OK job maybe on the top end of mediocre. We are in what is now probably the premier conference in the country, we have tons of money flowing in and while we have some challenges if PJ wasn’t such a shitty game day coach, we would have another 10 or 12 wins under our belt since he’s been here and would’ve gone to more than one good bowl game. The fact that we never won the West when it existed was criminal. Amazing?.Nah. Better than it could be – – sure.

It would take a seismic shift from the University of Minnesota administration to see something like that happen here... at least they're not outright hostile to the football program these days. There was a time, though (and not all that long ago...)

Also, there isn't someone ridin' in with bags of $$$$$ to change the culture of mediocrity at Minnesota... We all wish there were a "Cuban" here, but I don't see one showing up anytime soon.

How about this one?

I'm not going to take the time to find it but Reusse posted a tweet that essentially indicated the Gophers could have afforded to keep Perich if Fleck hadn't taken a raise/gotten a bonus. He's obviously a troll so never take anything seriously from him. But there are actually people that believe this (based on the responses). That the athletic department could have taken some of the money given to Fleck and paid the players with it instead. People are stupid.
