I agree. I like what Fleck is doing with recruiting, the portal and maintaining a majority of the high impact players in the program. I see quality depth with the 2026 team. Probably more than we have ever had across the roster. In this new world of college football, the next step with the program is to be able to compete better with the top tier teams and catch Iowa. But we need the proper financial backing from the University. I think most will agree with that. Tough schedule. I have us beating Iowa in 2026. I have us at 8-4 or 9-3 depending on the improvement and development in the trenches. On paper, it looks much better but it still needs to transfer to the field. Big things coming for the Gophers! Fleck is our guy. Just my opinion.What about periodically rewarding someone who continues to be modestly successful at a resource deficient program in a conference full of resource heavy programs? Fleck isn't a conference title contender but we've consistently punched above our weight class, even if it isn't to the extent that some here want to see. His teams buy in and perform on the field, they're achieving in the classroom, and they do a ton of community volunteer work. I'm cool with it. It's like a cost of living adjustment where the comparative wages are other coaches within the conference. If a caveat is that some if it has to be spent on improving the coordinator salary pool, even better.

A contract to automatically extend a contract?I'm not sure why they don't just put automatic 1 year extensions in his contract. Many coaches have that. Unless U rules/state law prohibits it for some reason.

Agree 100% with your view though. I've perused Iowa fan boards frquently in the past and read many rancorous comments about Ferentz and the former AD who kept giving him long and lucrative contracts. But, that AD recognized that Ferentz was a model of consistency and he preferred to continue that state rather than risk the program falling into the same condition that Nebraska and Wisconsin fell into.
Fleck has achieved a favorable level of consistency here too. Now, if he could only beat Ferentz a little more often.

Not to mention that the B1G shared revenue has progressively increased. He has personally had multiple raises. To say he has had no ability to negotiate higher assistant salaries shows more about his negotiating abilities or priorities. How can it be that he can negotiate a raise and extension for himself like every other year but can’t negotiate competitive assistant salaries which are much less than his own?And that’s Fleck’s fault? This. These long term contracts just aren't necessary in the era of the portal. Any coaches getting these long terms are either at schools that don't understand the new landscape, or are at a school that are letting the coach take advantage of them. Per the new hires this year, 5 year terms appears to be the common length.I honestly don’t think this as necessary as it used to be.
You used to need a coach to have 4 years left on his deal for more assurance he would be there.
NFL coaching contracts aren’t 6+ years.

PJ has raised and maintained the floor of this program, and has built a culture where kids clearly buy in. I don't think y'all understand how hard it is to make young kids buy into your program from start to finish. Also, apart from some NIL chalk-ups like Koi and Bucky, it's clear that kids like being here and playing here, and often leave due to PJ bringing in better talent.
If we had big donors for NIL, and were paying top dollar for the top assistants, and PJ was failing or even flat-lining, then, yeah, we'd have a problem. Considering what he's working with, he's the best option we have right now. Unless you want to go through another rebuilding process. I don't.
