Shadow Speaks

I think its going to be Anthony Grant. Teague knows him and he is a commodity that can be gotten. I'm not sure what the fan base reaction will be, nor the boosters, but I will be good with this selection.

Ugh. Give me Flip.

My Dark Friend, The Shadow, was excited when he called me from his cell phone this morning. He loves going to Minneapolis, and was beginning to pack his bags for a return flight "home". He wanted to get a leg up on everybody so he will be back home when this story breaks.

Shaka Smart will NOT be the next head coach. He will remain at VCU and talks were never serious. Smart has other plans out "East" and will wait. Teague knew this long ago. This did not stop Teague from moving forward. Boosters had his back with this knowledge and are committed to facility upgrades without Smart.

Flip is not at the top of the list. He is a fall back option.

The coach currently at the top of the list has an offer on the table. He is not an assistant and is a proven winner as a head coach. If he accepts the job he might not be the favorite name choice out there but will excite people as his resume is viewed.

Gopher fans may know by 5pm today if he accepts. If the offer is not accepted and made public today, the next coach may not be announced for numerous day. All eggs are in this basket currently.

More to come tonight. The Shadow has spoken.

Are you sure you're not THE SCOUT?

Antony Grant is a fantastic coach. He doesn't have he buzz of Shaka Smart but he has had a lot of success everywhere he's gone. He won the conference all three years at VCU and then has done a real nice job in Alabama (39-27 conference record). Additionally, in his last three years in Alabama he has recruited 2 5 star athletes and 5 4 star players to his squad.

39-27 is probably the equivalent of 27-39 in the Big Ten. We already had Tubby.

Flip is not a trusted brand. He's basically never coached college basketball, never recruited, and has been a complete disaster at developing players in the NBA. Even if you like Flip, it's not a know brand. He's the biggest unknown of the bunch.

Flip first successfully coached Golden Valley Lutheran College. along with that, he did develop a few point guards and was a successful CBA HC before his stints in the pros.

I am not trying to say the U should hire him, but if they did, which I do seriously doubt they would, he would be a better hire then given credit for, IMO.

He's 52. I saw him play in the Illinois State Tournament in the late 70's. I like his Midwest/Big Ten background (also was an assistant under Keady) and he also was an assistant at Kansas under Larry Brown during Danny & the Miracles.

Wouldn't excite the Gopher masses by any means, he's not young & hip like everyone wants, but Stallings would be a good hire, in my opinion. That said, Grant would be even better.

One other thing on Stallings. If Teague wants a coach that looks like himself, then Stallings is the frontrunner.

Go Gophers!!

Not a bad job, you'll get some people riled up about this.

It won't be Grant and it isn't Stallings but coaching in the same State as Stallings. The coach is currently a head coach in the SEC with a B1G background.

You're such a moron Bob. On one end you say all these great things about Grant (and conveniently don't bring up negatives) and you take all of these awkward stances against Flip but can't concede that he has any coaching strengths.

I'm not sure if your son was beat out by Ryan Saunders when they were younger, or if your bashing Flip for the sake of proving that you can out-debate anyone.

Yep, I took your bait Bob. It's just laughable to me that you act like such a basketball savant, yet call Flip the biggest unknown of the bunch. You sound delusional.

Are you just surmising that it's Cuonzo Martin, or do you have any sort of information?

Hey, I'm just responding to scools' post. No endorsement or disclaimer here!

What I do know is I'll get behind whoever they hire and not P&M about it for a second. Bo Ryan was Richter's 3rd or 4th choice (I think), and that's worked out pretty well for the Red Menace. Everyone seems to be in love with Teague, so I assume those same folks will still love him if it's not Shaka or Flip?

I'm just anxious to get the new guy and move forward.

Just surmising. Believe that a B1G job is something Martin has aspirations for.

I'd like to add Bobby Gonzalez and Billy Gillespie.

Bobby Gonzalez? There's a name from the past. If you want an example of what I know about hiring a basketball coach, there it is. He was my boy after Monson got fired. Be thankful I'm not an AD.

This just in from my sources... we hired a guy by the name of Saul Smith. Word is, his father will join his staff at Minnesota also. Can you say "Championship?"

I am with you Selection. This has bandwagon written all over it. The message board giveth and the message board taketh away. They are singing Teague's praises now because of his "gutsy" move in canning Tubby and the trend is that the masses (on the board) believe he has this deal in the bag. I am more skeptical, and I do think the real risk is that we get someone without a big name and they jump off Teague's bandwagon more quickly than they got on it.

I have no favorites, but I have always believed that if we are too succeed in Minnesota, we need someone with B1G/midwest roots, and guys like Marshall don't fit that for me. (Marshall's base is in the south, and I don't consider Kansas midwest-they relate more to Texas than Minnesota) My biggest fear is that we yank some relatively annonymous guy from another region that has no midwest base and he ends up behind the recruting eight ball, trying to convince the locals that he is one of us, and trying to convince his current recruiting base to leave the region and come to a historic midling at best program in Minnesota.

My second biggest fear is that we pay too much. I am not on the Shaka train, but I do think he brings enough of a "wow" factor that he won't be as behind as a guy like Marshall might be. Flip has some question marks but he brings immediate credibility to the locals, which I think is very important now, and my gut tells me we won't have to pay him 3 million clams to coach. If it is him, he needs to get solid college coaching experience on the bench with him. I am not hip on the SEC guys being named. The culture here is very different than what they know.

While there is excitment in the air, I am still of the opinion that we are in a high risk game here, and I am not as confident as many others that Teague has a plan if his immediate splash goes bubble on us.

Is Mike Ellis the consigliere for Shaka Smart and others? One Richmond radio personality says yes

...

But even if Minnesota doesn’t get Smart, Burton noted that fans should calm down.

On Monday, Teague said that Minnesota wasn’t planning to hire a search firm because of the contacts they have internally.

“They are a search firm!” Burton said. “I feel bad for Gophers fans because I think they’re so fixated on Shaka. They’re going to get an exceptional basketball coach because Norwood and Mike are so connected. … The schools will never admit it, but they have helped dozens of schools with their vacancies. Mid major schools through this whole Villa 7, but even outside of Villa 7, ADs are calling Mike Ellis, ADs are calling Norwood Teague and saying ‘What do you think?’ So they’ve advised mid majors all over the country to help them with basketball searches.”

Another name into the fire, Cuonzo Martin.

I will never for get the game against Purdue in '94. The Purdue players were taunting the student section quite heartily on their way down to the lockerroom. They were lucky no one threw a whiskey bottle at them.

It was either in 1993 or 1994 that someone did throw something that hit Glenn Robinson on the head, and Glenn flipped them off.

Agree with Holy Man about the theory that Teague needs to make a big splash with the hire after firing Tubby. Not sure he can do that and not sure he needs to. Just needs to ultimately make a good hire regardless if the press conference falls below expectations.
