Serious conversation

Yup, need everything to come together at the same time. Agree they have been good. They are not this year.
And it's why I have major questions about next year. People hate Carroll, but he's been fairly solid during his time here. Replacing him. Cooper and Ersery will not be seamless.

Not sure how next year is not a rebuilding year. Year 0 all over again.

Winnable games slip through our hands - meh sorry PJ but another 5/6 loss season - say what you want but it’s the harsh reality of where we will be with this

PJ is not improving. PJ is regressing. Next year could be a 3-9 or 4-8 season. The hiring of Jerry Kill was fun, the hiring of PJ Fleck was fun, the last 5 years haven't been very fun. Losing games we shouldn't and falling short of expectations. We lost by 1 today, but we were winning most of the game. For me, losing by 1 or losing by 14 today wouldn't have made a difference, it's still a loss. 6-5 and odds are this team will lose to Wisconsin next week. The talent on this team will be worse next season. This team underperformed again, for the 5th straight season. I've heard the expectation was 4.5 wins, I never saw that. I saw 5.5.
Sounds like you think the team underperforms no matter how many games they win. I’m sure you’ll tag them with it if they win 7-8 next year despite your 3-4 win projection.

At Oregon. At OSU. Likely unwinnable.
Everything else on the schedule is there for the taking.
But so much is hard to predict at this point.
Hard to say what happens with Oregon after this season. They’ll probably still be very good, don’t get me wrong, but they won’t be the same team that they are this year. Lots of people ruled out @ Michigan and Penn State this year and for both we came a play or two away from potentially winning. At any rate, our home schedule is very favorable. I could see us going 6-1 or 5-2 in that slate with an average team and making a bowl off of that.

Not about the opponents like it was last year. About the team next year. Totally new offensive line (as bad as they have been, they can get worse). New QB. New receivers. Going to be a totally new offense and likely not a good one.

Good season to have low expectations and just enjoy the atmosphere. Will get better after that.

We consistently recruit in the 25-40 range and that's about where we are. Need to catch lightening in a bottle. It's possible. At the very least we need to improve the OL. That alone can cover up some warts. We will be fine.
I’d agree. They play to roughly their recruiting rankings. Need to get lucky once in a while

Hard to tell with the portal but next year looks like it could be a rough one.

What led anyone to believe that this year was going to be markedly different than any of the previous 50 seasons?

Beat Wisconsin, win a bowl game. Fun little season.
Agree---I've said it a thousand times. I'm a happy camper if we beat Iowa and Wisconsin at least 50% of the time, have at least a .500 or better record, and go to a bowl game. (we ain't winning no BIG titles or going to the 12 team playoff)

That's the beauty of college football. Many teams can have successful seasons without having to win the ultimate championship.

What just thinking today and seeing the senior class and wondered- when is it ever going to get better? I just feel like there are some legitimate really good players on this roster who has a chance to play in the NFL. The defensive line has some dudes. The middle linebacker is tough as nails. Have a really good corner. An offensive lineman that is going to play for a long time in the NFL and a couple of others that might too. The TE is impressive. Two WR's that can play. A QB that has some capabilities and a really good running back. It's year eight for the HC. I am not suggesting a change in leadership. Just wondering, what is it going to take? The team is 6-5 and truly might be at its maximum talent level that you can expect.
What limits the maximum talent level at UM?

It's college football. Every one of our opponents is losing a bunch of key guys.

Transfer portal allows much more freedom to quick-patch holes. Underclassmen will step up.

I think Daniel Jackson will be the hardest player to replace after the QB spot. The Gophers have a mostly awful track record with transfer receivers but will need to hit on a couple for 2025.

That 4-game stretch was the anomaly. The Gophs have a losing record against Power 4 teams. To me, this season is a disappointment given the talent and that the team has been relatively healthy compared to the past three years.

Lost to a good PSU team.
Lost to an above average (barely) Iowa team.
Lost to a mediocre Michigan team.
Lost to a below average North Carolina team.
Lost to a below average Rutgers team.
What hurts about this season isn't the record. When the season started, most of us didn't expect more (or much more) than being 6-5 at this point in the season. I think the prognosticators had us projected to go more like 3-8 or 4-7. What hurts is HOW we lost these games. We were leading yesterday well into the game. Same with the Iowa game until the half. Missed a short FG to lose to North Carolina. Had Michigan on-the-ropes. If 2 of those four games go the other way, this season would have been far different. 3 of those 4 and it would have been special!

I think some on this board are over reacting. I was at the game today, it was a great experience. Crowd was into it the whole way, and the Gophers took the number 4 or 5 team down to the wire! I’ll take that over getting smoked and having no chance any day of the week. Reality is the NIL era, the money that’s in the collective and the supposed TV money to pay players (sounds like it’s going to happen) you can change a team quickly! Recruiting the portal is where teams can go from miserable to great in one season (see Indiana this year). Cupboard is not bare with the talent here. Yes, they lose a lot but I think a lot can change due to the factors mentioned. Sky is not falling Gophers fans! Let’s see what happens. We will never be tOSU, Bama, or Oregon with their NIL but I think we can sneak into the playoffs every so often with the current arrangements.

Rutgers beat us and was super close to beating Illinois, a team we barely beat. I'd say those three teams are fairly even. So that would then make all three below average right?

Almost every Big Ten coach out thinks PJ on game day. And until he gets that figured out, we will continue to scuffle along. I’m optimistic on our talent. I think the OL will be better next year. I love the returning D group. I’d love to go back in time to whomever taught or told PJ that momentum is not a real thing and kick that person in the nuts. PJ fails to capitalize on what is a very real thing quite often and it’s maddening.

Totally agree. Coach treats every snap as a unique event and fails to account for the initial conditions coming into each snap, especially performance wise. Similar to his thinking that each game is a one-off championship season.

Don't know if his mom took away his lollypop randomly when he was a kid around cleaning his room but momentum in football is the intersection of team psychology and performance. The Gophers had the momentum for much of yesterday. Roll the dice like you can't lose and maybe you won't.

Many a time playing RISK had my one-die defender beat out or severely deplete a three-on-one attacking country. The odds say it shouldn't happen but it certainly does.

You are what your record is. That means Rutgers is below average (for a Power 4 team).

I thought the prognosticators were full of shit and only going on the bad 2023 record caused from tons of key injuries and bad QB play. I thought this year would be better, and once I saw the talent level on the field, I had high hopes for a 9+ win season. However, the team kept finding ways to screw up more often than not (resulting in a losing Power 4 record so far).

Well said: “…fails to account for the initial conditions coming into each snap”!

I don’t have a major problem with the 1-0 mentality, but the not believing in momentum bothers me. I don’t anyone who rows a boat, a kayak, a canoe or whatever by rowing one time, then waits to make the next stroke until the propulsion from the first effort ends; you row row row to gain and maintain momentum to help you get to your destination!

I don't know. They lose a lot. Obviously it's impossible to project with the portal, but we know very little about how Lindsey will do at this level (if he's even the starting QB), the WR group is mostly more unknowns and they lose a lot on defense.
Every year is full of unknowns. Someone will step up to replace Jackson. Lindsey will be just fine. Gophs actually gained a lot on defense this year.

Well said. We still put our players in the NFL, but I also like the graduation rate, academic achievements that have created professionals in various fields, community outreach, and I don't see very many articles, if any, about our players running afoul of the police. Fleck says he manages a transformational program. I believe him. There will be years when he will have the kind of results that make Gopherholer's proud, and then there will be the years where we are inconsistent and have the UNC, Rutgers, PSU results.

And it's why I have major questions about next year. People hate Carroll, but he's been fairly solid during his time here. Replacing him. Cooper and Ersery will not be seamless.

Ersery will be the difficult to replace. Cooper and Carroll are below average B1G O lineman. This was the worst OL of the Fleck era, and I look forward to some new bodies there next year.

What did they gain on D (that will be here next year)? Perich obviously. Jaxon Howard played a little. Beyond that?

Sounds like you think the team underperforms no matter how many games they win. I’m sure you’ll tag them with it if they win 7-8 next year despite your 3-4 win projection.
If they win 7 or 8 regular season games next season I would not say that. The other thing to factor in is games they lose that they should win and if they have any good wins. Illinois their only decent win this year imo. USC next best win. Lastly, this roster was set up for a better season. To me, Fleck was a better coach at WM and his first few years here. I don’t think he’s as good without Ciarrocca. I think the current OC improved as the year went on but that he still has a ways to go. The NC loss was bad, the offensive game plan vs Rutgers was bad and this game I believe Fleck and the OC lost, which seems to happen a lot the last several years.

Cooper and Carroll were serviceable. Mid-pack in the conference. They weren't the main issue. The center was maybe the worst in the conference. Fleck might need to go to the portal and move Johnson over to guard or get him coached up; I believe it was his first year at center.

We’ve beat Iowa once in Fleck’s tenure.
