Say something nice about Iowa thread.........

If it weren't for Iowa, where would we stick all the Iowans?

Nice thing about Iowa: My Grandma was from Iowa. However, she had the good sense to move away and never go back.

My great Grandparents lived in Iowa for a couple of years before my mom was born, they had the good sense to get out and not go back.

Living in southern Iowa briefly and later having a daughter attend Drake has given me a great chance to find positives. Here are my top ten.

1. Only beer was available for purchase in Lamoni.
2. Turkey nut feeds in Decatur City
3. Someone siphoned my gas tank dry in Amana Colonies
4. Des Moines featured small city problems complicated by urban level violence
5. I could see Missouri from my house
6. The Jimmy Dean sausage plant in Osceola was visible from I-35
7. A daily, chowder-thick February fog posed no visibility problems past noon.
8. In December, ice skates were more reliable than my van
9. Livestock rarely wandered about loose on the freeway after dark
10 The KC radio stations came in clear as could be

Oh crap! We said positives. Sorry.

Okoboji blows. It's the only freaking lake in that state and it gets overrun by them in the summer. It's way to f'ing crowded to do anything on the lake or in the area and again, it's full of them. Not to mention the horrible runoff from the surrounding farms into the lake. I'd rather get punched in the nuts repeatedly than go there again.

Something nice to say? There are alot of really old people in Iowa.

May be true, but 10 or so years ago I went to a Gopher game there and the "W" and "A" signs got mixed up and the crowd cheered I-O-A-W a good three times before realizing it. So classic. I believe others on this board have recalled that story as well in past years. 100% true.

I was there... You can't make this stuff up. It was hilarious!

I once applied for a job in Iowa and the box that normally says "male or female" said, "Ole or Lena".

You can drive through Iowa rather quickly to get to Kansas City.

The nice thing about driving through Iowa is that you can get to Kansas City in six hours rather than the 7 hours that Google maps indicates it takes. It is a quick drive to get to Kaufman stadium to watch the Twins play the Royals. Even with all of the corn your less likely to hit a dear in Iowa than Nebraska because there is less water.

That and there are a few more trees and things to look when driving through Iowa compared to Wyoming or Nebraska, that boring drive is just endless same skyline or same things to look at.

Iowa has Diamond Jo's casino and Prairie Meadows racetrack and casino(nice place), both have good buffets
and are a nice diversion when driving through to stop at and if you like to gamble once and a while, rather play there than Mystic
Lake, Treasure Island, or Grand Casinos who have zero competition to compete against. Last time I was to Mystic Lake reminded me why I had not gone there in five years, machines play quickly even if you move and your done in five minutes, just takes your money, really no entertainment at all.

That reminds me, I'd rather drive through Iowa than Nebraska at least there are things on the side of the road to look at most of the time. Nebraska generally smells better though but they must have the National record for falling asleep at the wheel. When I drove through Nebraska there was a point where I didn't see anything for so long that when I finally saw a lone tree on a hill I was like, "Wooot! A tree!".

Iowa was nice to Floyd while he was there. They gave it all sorts of love before they return him this week.

Do we really want it back if that's what they're doing with it?

We are in good shape in that department when you consider we also have the neighbors to the east....lol.

True, but Wisconsinites tend to hold their liquor better than Iowans. As evident by Vodka_Samm and Lois Feldman...

1. gopherdudepart2 mentioned Prairie Meadows. We go there every year for Kentucky Derby (Canterbury's opening weekend shifted to Preakness Weekend few years back),

2. Iowa Speedway is nice place to watch an IndyCar race. If you enjoy Indy cars, and

3. Minor League Baseball - Twins affiliate in particular (Cedar Rapids). Gives opportunity to see Twins prospects in Single A.

Those are the 3 that come to mind.

Mom always said if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. What I found out is that if you ignore Mom's advice, GH administrators will enforce it for her ;-)

I forgot something else. I once lived next door to a few cute Iowa gals from Burlington. They just loved the tall buildings in downtown Minneapolis!

Some years ago a young man from North Dakota married a girl from Iowa. They wisely chose not to have children as the stability of said offspring would be highly suspect.
