Looks like the people on this board aren't the only ones that want change - a number of former Gopher Football players have spoken up on this topic:

www.savegopherfootball.com

I think they are a little carried away with what football revenue can support at the U. I am glad many of these players feel strongly toward the program, but I can't help but laugh that many of the players quoted on the website players in the 80's and early 90's. I like how one former team captain wishes to remain nameless. If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny.

The football team hasn't graduated a lot of econ majors.

Also they couldn't register savethegophers.com because I beat them to it laff. Although I took my anti-Brew site down since that ship has sailed.

Nor a lot of English majors. Their manifesto should have been put through spell-check.

yes the writing leaves a bit to be desired.

but...

WHY ARE YOU GUYS RIPPING THESE FORMER PLAYERS THAT CLEARLY WANT THINGS TO GET BETTER, JUST LIKE WE DO!

GL what is your connection to this group? In their press release they quote your article to state feelings that are well known. You have also posted a link to their website before it is up and totally functional (their press release is dated the 9th). Are members of this group the same people you used as sources earlier when you listed your list of possible coaching candidates? If so they seem to at least be possibly informed as to what is going on in the search.

The site design is terrible too. The background looks like my dead grandmother's wallpaper.

Their hearts are in the right place, they're just not putting their best foot forward. They need some help.

perhaps, but I'd rather see the current offering than nothing at all, i'm just sayin.

I am doing so because unlike us internet posters their opinions may caring some weight. All they are doing is making the U look bad. If they care as much as they claim they should shut up, open their wallets, and support the current gopher players. Many of these players didn't exactly play during the glory years of gopher football, but are taking some real shots at the state of the program which includes the players. That is what bothers me about this group, plus that fact that at least one of them is remaining nameless.

Wait, aren't you the one who put up the "trestman is a pedophile" site up?

Now that is just dishonest. I never said he was a pedophile.

I said he looks like a pedophile.

I have to agree with Silvio on this.

Their hearts are in the right place. It is clear most of them do not trust Maturi to make the hire. However, I am not sure what they are trying to accomplish beyond bashing the current administration.

Also, I hate the Wacker era gold on the site.

I actually have no connection to it - just got an email about it today, so that was the 1st I heard of the site. I know very little, not much more than you all do. I'm inquiring to find out more - what they plan to do, etc. I will keep you posted as I find out more - but they assured me they will be doing things very classy and tactfully. I know they are very well-connected with former players - and I reached out to one former player I have a lot of respect for, and he said they were legit and supported them.

So no - they were not my source for the coaching candidates I heard about.

Thanks for the response. Just curios due to the connections I noted above. Would you also ask what their realistic end game is? It has to be something other than embarrassing themselves and the U, getting a seat at the table, or having someone other than Maturi and Bruinniks (sp) make the hire. I hope they also understand the difference in timing between this hire and the time frame for hiring Brewster.

Have you heard anything else? Just curious.

Ok I totally get it, I was thinking it was bashing for the sake of bashing, but it makes sense, if they are going to do this, they should do it in the best way possible and that includes spell check and legitimate offers of help.

I would like to claim a small victory. The unnamed team captain on their site has been named or removed!

Didn't the players have a say in the hiring of Gutekunst? I'll be glad what this is over, I would be surprised if we had to wait too long into December.

I don't think it will go more than a week or two past the Iowa game unless one of their finalists is coaching in a conference championship game. However, since it appears that they are staying away from coordinators I wouldn't expect to need to wait that long.

Ummm, no. I heard it from My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. ;)

Have you heard anything else? Just curious.

Nothing that hasn't already been posted here.

Here's the plan. Cory Sauter, HC of SW Minnesota State, does 4 years there, then moved on to be an OC at a I-AA school for two years. He then takes over as HC of that school for 4 years. Then we hire him as QB coach for 2 years, and he gets promoted to OC for 4 years. Then he becomed our next next HC, after the guy we hire next month retires in 16 years.

uhhh... I kind get the feeling this is a bogus site. Meaning, a private individual trying to represent former players. It also looks very sloppy and unprofessional, with dates wrong, grammatical errors and the like. I'm sure whomever put this together cares about gopher football, and I'm sure the quotes are real, though some are cut & paste from newspaper articles. The whole site just comes across as clumsy. In addition, if this site truly represents former players... what's the point of trying to convince us. I mean, what's the point? If a consortium of former players really wants to have sway in the hiring process they would appoint an individual who has a lot of credible clout, someone who is in the public eye to speak for them. This person would have so much clout that president Bob would take his call and listen to what he had to say. But isn't this already happening in name of Tony Dungy. I mean, shouldn't the so-called players who back this website seek out Tony Dungy. He's obviously their guy, he's the one who has the ear of J-Mat and BobB. I just don't think the site is real. Whomever is behind it is someone who is passionate and cares about the gophers, yes. But.. otherwise, what's the point.

I don't think it is bogus as much as misleading. It appears to be one person's manifesto, but the "What people are saying" section gives the appearance that this is an organization, and that the quoted people are members of this organization and agree with the website. But it doesn't actually say that.

There's some anti-Maturi flyers around campus. I saw one stapled to a utility pole on University. Should've grabbed it.

I see a lot of ranting on that site, but unless I missed it, there is no solution. Except for don't let Maturi make the decision. So who does?

"The Gopher Football program belongs to the people of Minnesota, the current and past players, staffs, the University and its students—not an administration or administrator!"

So what then? We put a few names on a ballot and have a statewide election to pick the next coach? Do these former players even agree among themselves who it should be?

They're really not very clear in their objective. It reads a little like Gopherhole, but with less thought put into it. :)

I agree as well. If this is legitimate, I applaud the enthusiasm. Ultimately we all have the same goal: to have a winning and successful program. But I don't know what they are trying to do here. I do not think former players should select the next coach.

I have to tell you that anyone thinking the major push for former players is from no minds or unsuccessful, or players from losing teams has no insight at all. The majority are from the winning yrs., and were very successful business people and athletes. They are not saying that they want to hire the coach but would like meaningfull input. Keep doing the same thing and expecting different results is just plain stupid. OOPS DID I SAY MATURI?
