I happen to be looking at Rivals list of 2012 recruits that had interest in the U of M and Sam Maresh's name came up. It listed the following information:

Inside linebacker
Council Bluffs, Iowa
Iowa Western C.C.
View Map
Ht:6'3"
Wt:250 lbs
40:4.7 secs
Class:2012 (HS - December Grad)

The only school he listed as being interested in was the U of M (medium interest)

Hopefully, he has been getting his life in order and will be able to come back.

This could be the kind of thing that really gets his life in order and I hope it does. I would love to see Maresh back with the Gophers. I am not 100% sure that the U would have much interest in giving him another scholarship but he is a talented kid who does seem to love the U.

His photo looks like a mugshot:

I say give him a second chance

President Clinton had some depression after he had his open heart surgery; there are lots of ill effects for the procedure Sam had; I hope the U and the fans would give him a second chance to be a Gopher and in general.

Ummm what? I dont think he is unless he converted sometime in college. I went to HS with him.

He's not mormon. My oldest brother wrestled for Bill at Champlin Park. The Maresh's come from Utah I believe(somewhere around that area) where Bill was a very successful HS wrestling coach, but their not mormons. They also have some ties to Becky as Sam's cousin Kyle Massey was a heavyweight wrestler for the BADgers.

Was he a cocky SOB in high school? One of my ex employees wrestled against him in HS for Coon Rapids and could nt stand him...

A Mormon friend of mine goes to church with Sam's family in Brooklyn Park. His family is definitely Mormon - not that this has anything to do with Sam playing football for the Gophers.

Whatever he is.. I've always been cheering for him to get his head on straight and re-join the team. Would hate to see Iowa or Wisky give him that second chance and him ending up being a huge success for them.

I had a class with him is freshman year, he seemed to be more of an athlete than an academic. Hopefully that has changed, and if he does come back, I for one would welcome it.

How many years of eligability would he have though? We have Brandon Beal who is a lock to be MLB for the next 3 (I think) years. As much as I like hometown heroes, I don't think he is talented enough to supplant Beal as the starter. A quality backup is never a bad thing, however.

The whole mormon thing is crazy because i knew both Sam(kind of) and his older sister and didnt know that about them.

About Sam he was one cocky kid and most in our HS couldnt stand him. I have said this before it wasnt surprising to anyone that he had to transfer from the U of M because of grades and personal issues.

A cocky athlete? And a guy that goes against him thinks he's a dick? Far fetched, but possible.

I understand - they were childhood friends and Maresh totally spurned the guy beginning in about 10th grade. I had no clue if it was accurate, just asked a classmate a question...

Isn't that a normal thing? Spurning some of your old friends at the beginning of high school?

I'm not sure I'd want to be behind Beal at MLB for 3 years? Also, if he so much as looks crosseyed at anyone on campus for 2-3 years it'll be front page news because of his prior run-ins.

Also, it's really not a shocker that he's a meathead or a dick. When did superstar wrestling/football jocks become humble, nice guys & "A" students? They exist I know, but they're the exception to the rule imo.

Yeah, with Beal here that isn't a spot just waiting for him, but I think he would still contribute. Kill is known for shuffling players in and out of the game quite a bit, Beal might be able to play some SLB (against power running teams, he did practice some OLB at Florida), and Maresh certainly has the size for DE as well.

What's up

I don't understand why a post about a player possibly coming back to MN has to turn into a personal rip of said player. It sounds like there are a lot of envious people out there who delight at a chance to take shots a someone who didn't do the most with his opportunity.

Not taking a shot, sorry if it came off that way

I am not envious. I just don't like him as a person based on my dealings with him through a semester of class. That said, I support the football team, and that wouldn't change if he did come back.

+1. Coach Kill mentioned tonight the possible negative things that recruits and recruit parents see on the boards. Not just ours, all around the country. It only hurts our recruiting efforts.

Someone in this thread said that Brendan Beal has 3 more seasons of eligibility to play for the gophs. How is this the case? If I recall correctly Beal was a 2008 high school grad.

Do we need an Exorcist?

I am also completely lost. Seems like it was only a few weeks ago we were all praying for Sam and his family, especially for Sam's recovery. Accolades were flowing from everywhere about Sam. Now all of the sudden this negative discussion. Where did this come from? What is the basis for it? We have gone from this great guy who is fighting against all medical odds whom we all were praying for, and now I see these postings where people are urinating and defecating on his character. What horrible things did Sam do to deserve this sudden negativity? Did he suddenly become possessed and in need of an exorcism? Help me here.

Give him a break

Like I said before ... this started out as a thread about whether he is coming back. Don't understand why folks needs to be so mean spirited. Looks like he has done well at the school he transferred to. He got hammered when he blew his first chance with the Gophers. Seems to me he should be given the benefit of the doubt before he gets hammered again. If he blows his second chance then some of you can get out of your "Glass Houses" and throw some stones.

I feel bad for the medical stuff he has had to go through, but we don't need any more thugs on this team period. I haven't heard 1 person who knew this kid in college or high school have 1 good thing to say about him. NO MORE THUGS!

Supposedly he already has it confirmed that he will receive an additional season (6th) because his time at Florida was riddled with injuries.

So 2008-2009.....RS
2009-2010.......injured all season and will be granted a 6th year of eligibity (supposedly already confirmed)
2010-2011.......transfer season (loses 1 year of eligibility)
2011 football season he will be a sophomore.

Now, I haven't been on here ripping on Sam and I have no personal dealings with him but I don't think the resentment towards him is out of nowhere.

It makes sense that no one would be bringing up his supposedly bad attitude while he was having heart surgery, that is the definition of classless. So i'm sure even the people that didn't like him personally showed the common decency to rip on Sam during that ordeal.

However, when he came back from his medical issues, there have been a lot of rumors about him being a typical bully/meathead, getting drunk in public and pushing people around. I don't know if any of it's true, but that is the image that Sam has created to a lot of Gopher fans (even before he left for JuCo).

The kid is a thug plain the simple. gophers don't need him

Turn the page. The Gophers need talented players. Sam fits that bill. Hopefully he has learned from all his experiences in that past few years. He deserves the chance to prove on and off the field that he can contribute to our football program.
