Damn. Did Purdue guarantee him to be a starter at QB?
 


For the best if the kid is consistently unsure. I'm not blaming the kid, just saying it's better for the program to have kids fully buy-in. Especially because that's what PJ and the culture is all about.

I think it’s much more so that he really wants to play QB.

The depth we have at QB didn't really bode well for him getting on the field anytime soon, if at all. Not a terrible loss IMO. I saw "Four Star Decommit" and was really hoping it wasn't one of the DBs or the RB from Illinois. With that being said, it will be unusually tough keeping kids on board, especially those who committed without yet visiting campus. I do, however, expect us to flip our fair share of commits as well. Buckle up and enjoy the ride to signing day!
 



Never had a good feeling about this one. Good that he did it now to let us know. Yet seems like he is flopping around to find his turf to his liking. I don't know if he'll ever be happy. Good luck to him.
 







Wish good luck for him. If he really wants to prove himself, he did the right thing because he'll have to go against the best defense in the BIG every year in Minnesota.
 


It used to be the Gophers would've taken anybody at QB in a run heavy offense.

Now, they have the opposite problem. They are stacked at QB in a vibrant RPO/RTB brand offense.

I wish Sam Jackson luck. He really truly wants to be at center and Purdue must have given him a better shot at QB.

It's time to lock and reload. JD, there is plenty of room for you.
 

Dang, he is an exciting athlete and was interested to see what he would be able to do here. I wouldn't feel overly confident if I was Purdue in his verbal as he has shown he is not shy about changing his mind.

Guess is this has to be QB related. Based on his tweets he still seems very fixated on playing QB and the path to that happening for him at the U was not promising. Maybe he sees a better opportunity to earn the QB job at Purdue.

Again, we're talking about kids here. And nobody knows who is whispering in his ear.

I suppose my more grounded question would be:

If he is a 4* prospect as a QB, is he still a 4* prospect if he is moved to another position? In other words, is the rating position-specific, or is a 4* a 4* no matter what position you put him at?

He’s 4* as an ATH. Now that he’s committed as a QB, shouldn’t he be rated as a QB? I’d say low to mid 3* with potential. He completed less than 50% of his passes with 3 D1 WRs to throw to.
 


Darn. Was looking forward to him being a dynamic WR/Wildcat. Best of luck Sam except when we play Purdue!

He was never going to play QB here. He was recruited to the Gophers to play some other position. Purdue told him they'd give him a shot at QB. My prediction is he will end up being a really good WR for the Boilers in a few years. You have to hand it to Brohm in securing the kid by telling him he will play QB, when almost assuredly he won't.

I would strongly suggest the Gophers close the door for good and walk away. Do not try to get him back or re recruit him. On to the next name on the list!

Not if he doesn't buy in to the position change. I could see him transferring and chasing this dream of playing QB which he seems dead set on.
 

Athletes that want to be in this program will be successful. Regardless of if we lose a 4 star we will have kids that rise to the occasion. The groundwork is set so that these athletes will rise above their ratings once they get into the program. Example is Winfield Jr. We will have several 3 star recruits that will become big time players. That's the type of program we are now.

I agree. My assumption when he recommitted was that he had come to grips with the fact that QB might not be in his future at the power 5 level. Clearly it appears that is not the case and he feels Purdue will give him a better shot at playing the position.

I would fully expect him to transfer out of Purdue if he does not see a realistic shot at winning the QB job. He seems very tied up in the idea of being a QB. I am sure Purdue is hoping they can convince him to make the position switch eventually even if I am also sure they are telling him everything he wants to hear right now about the QB position. He just doesn't seem like a strong power 5 QB prospect. Amazing athlete but it takes more then just being a great athlete to survive as a QB at the top level.

If I had to place a bet right now, I would feel very confident betting that in a few years he will have dropped down to some other school outside of the power 5 where he can play QB, possibly even at the FCS level (that all assumes he sticks with Purdue which is in no way a sure thing with this kid).

Shame, because he looks like a great athlete and it would have been fun to see what he could do here. But if he wasn't going to be willing to accept a position change then it wouldn't have ended well anyway because I will be very surprised if he ends up making it as a power 5 QB.
