Sam Jackson decommits from Gophers again - going to Purdue

It does appear they are giving him a legit shot as he is the only QB in their class, for now anyways. Lot of crystal balls have come in for their other main QB target to go to Indiana.

I agree. My assumption when he recommitted was that he had come to grips with the fact that QB might not be in his future at the power 5 level. Clearly it appears that is not the case and he feels Purdue will give him a better shot at playing the position.

I would fully expect him to transfer out of Purdue if he does not see a realistic shot at winning the QB job. He seems very tied up in the idea of being a QB. I am sure Purdue is hoping they can convince him to make the position switch eventually even if I am also sure they are telling him everything he wants to hear right now about the QB position. He just doesn't seem like a strong power 5 QB prospect. Amazing athlete but it takes more then just being a great athlete to survive as a QB at the top level.

If I had to place a bet right now, I would feel very confident betting that in a few years he will have dropped down to some other school outside of the power 5 where he can play QB, possibly even at the FCS level (that all assumes he sticks with Purdue which is in no way a sure thing with this kid).

Shame, because he looks like a great athlete and it would have been fun to see what he could do here. But if he wasn't going to be willing to accept a position change then it wouldn't have ended well anyway because I will be very surprised if he ends up making it as a power 5 QB.

If Jackson really wants to go to a place where his talents would be fully utilized at the QB position, and where he might play almost immediately, he should commit to Georgia Southern. Their offense is perfect for his skill set at QB. Someone should turn GSATalon on to the Jackson situation.

He’ll be back.
Doubt it. He isn’t sure what he wants. With Fleck, you join to help wherever the team’s coaches think you are best suited, given the team’s system and present needs. You accept your role, take a seat, and start rowing. Jackson isn’t in that spot yet with the Gopher coaches, and I somehow doubt he will be come signing day. It’s tough being able to play multiple positions well. He’s a kid whose dreams place him at QB not WR. I wish him luck.

What's the etiquette these days for cash payments from boosters -- do 'cruits get the cash when they commit, or do they have to wait until they actually sign?

It depends on the croot but generally it's just a taste until they sign... gotta keep them hungry.

Could be setting up some epic battles versus Athan in the years to come.
With Iowa possibly taking a hit, and Nebraska turning out to be a turd, Purdue and now Minnesota are trying their best to set them up to be the top contenders to Wisconsin in the West division.

But what about transferring? Gotta keep 'em there once they've signed. Do they get game time bonuses for each one? Or do the keys to the new car only get handed over at the end of the season? Wish we had someone from Duke or NC on this board so they could clear up all the confusion.

Not if he doesn't buy in to the position change. I could see him transferring and chasing this dream of playing QB which he seems dead set on.

Very well could be. That happens for sure.

However, usually what happens, and it is why coaches will use this approach in promising a kid a chance at the position of his dreams.....then, the kid comes in, plays fall camp and a spring at QB, makes good friends with guys on the team, likes his coaches, gets a girlfriend, generally gets settled in, etc. So, then when the decision time comes as to how to get on the field for real, the kid chooses to stay with his friends, with his girlfriend, with the coaching staff he has known, and switches positions. It is often hard to walk away and start over. Countless, countless examples of that. Position changes are quite common. (Seth Green is just one of many examples on the Gophers).

That said, the kid is really talented and does have a good arm. Maybe he'll be the next Drew Brees (a short, productive, all-Big Ten QB from Purdue).

I watched him compete in the past with Kowalkowski, at a college camp. I ran college track and he looks like a sprinter. He did not look like he was over 5'9" at the time. When they paired up they were even during the shuttle test, but Jackson has track speed running the 20 yards. He was hell bent on being a QB at this camp as well, his best suited position at this level is slot. His mechanics did not appear trained. Kowalkowski ate him up on the throwing drills.

You'll be back,
you can tell
You'll remember Fleck recruited you well

In our boat
Rowing along
even if I have to butcher this song!

You'll be back
Time will tell
Or I will send a 250 lb. linebacker to stop you across the middle.

Oceans Rise
Badgers fall
Our Gophers will rise above it all

Fleck is wise
You will see
Wide Receiver is where you should be

And if push comes to shove
And a Boiler Quarterback is truly what you love
Then we will keep you off the field, as our offense dominates your team to remind you it was the Gophers you should have loved.

Dah da dah da dah,

PJ likes to croot a lot of ATH type guys. And that's fine.

I think half the battle with ATH guys who have their heart set on a position they might not find they're good at when moving up a level is a combo of telling them that they're going to get a shot... but being honest that you also want to move them if it doesn't work out.

That can be a tough sell and the team that lands them might still be able to move them after practices pile up and they see who they're seeing the competition.

ON the other hand if the guy is REALLY set on that spot, then yeah it's not a good match-up team to player wise.

The wildcard is ... you don't know if the guy is going to change his mind about his role, and he doesn't either.

Word has it Oregon (I think it was Oregon) wanted Green to play another position but he came to MN to play QB... and still switched.

Never know, the coaches, the kid, nobody knows.

Winner, post of the day. Made me laugh, thanks

Can't fault the kid for chasing his QB dream. The QB competition at MN is elite. Even Cole Kramer has a shot. Jacob Clark and Annexstad are heavy competition.

Gophergrandpa, you've got something there... Georgia Southern may be a better fit for the kind of offense that is well suited for him.

Jeff Brohm at Purdue can be a very acerbic guy when things are not going his way.

Why is it that Purdue seem to be injury prone? Man, they had a mash unit last season. It is quite bizzare to lose QB Elijah Sindelar and WR Rondale Moore on the same play.

Tai'yon Devers drove Sindelar to the ground on a sack attempt. He landed on his left shoulder awkwardly. Moore was making a cut on a play away from Sindelar. Immediately, he grabbed his left leg as he landed on the ground.

It is hard to project how Sam Jackson will fare. Can he handle the high expectations if he starts immediately at Purdue? The speed of the game is faster than in H.S. Georgia Southern will definitely be a better fit with no pressure like the Big Ten.

You can tell a recruit anything he wants to hear. When he signs and is on campus thats another thing. Who knows what brohm will do with him. He's the leader in the clubhouse though right now!

The Gophers QB Room was probably used as a recruiting tool against the Gophers. They sense that Sam Jackson was vacillating and is ripe for the picking. The Slick Willy recruiters weaponize by telling a kid what he wants to hear all the time.

Sam Jackson who committed to the Gophers, de-committed, then committed to Minnesota again before switching to Purdue and then playing for Cal, TCU and Auburn, has entered the Portal:

Go Gophers!!
There is probably a reason he is going on his 4th school.

Crazy that we are witnessing a time when guys are playing for 3, 4 or even 5 different schools during their college career.
