Ryan Burns on Kaden Johnson

Becky has had a crazy run of developing linebackers and putting them into the nfl since they switched to the 3-4. I'm thinking their coaches are better at evaluating talent than Burns or members of this board. Becky got their guys. We got ours. Let's line up and see who's better.

How did this become a Lindenburg vs. Kaden Johnson thread? LOL.
Clearly shouldn't have happened. Seems to be a common occurrence for some not to stay on course of the original topic.

The original story is jilted girlfriend stuff. Everyone cooled on him? Wisconsin was full? Right. Kaden has a nice blend of size, speed, power. He didn’t want to go to MN, so what? Wisky is known for their defensive scheme and development, have a good eye for talent, and wouldn’t blow a spot on a guy they feel is subpar.

Your take on their developing linebackers is spot on. I think we may have 3/4 future LB's on the team and I have a good feeling about Rossi and our future linebacker prospects as well.

Why tear a scab off of a cut?
Everyone posting would have been very happy to have Johnson as a recruit.
He chose to go to WI. It is over. Why punish yourselves by digging this up again.
Burns is protecting his pipeline from PJ by giving him some cover.

Wisconsin doesn't need you here to give them cover.

Wisconsin offered the four-star linebacker back in April of 2018 and made Johnson a priority ever since. Johnson took an official visit to UW in June. While the Badgers knew they were in the driver's seat at the time, Johnson certainly tested the staff's patience and pursuit of him the rest of the way.

"They've been with me through this long process," Johnson stated. "I told them on my official, 'You guys are leading, you've done everything right.' For them to still be here and hold my spot, stay in contact with me and my family, it's a real blessing.

From Johnson's own words, he's happy that they held a spot for him. That sure doesn't sound like a guy with multiple options at the end of the recruiting cycle.

When I read this, I interpret it as “wow I’m really glad you guys allowed me to use you as a safety school! I pushed LSU and some other schools that I really wished would’ve offered me, but they wouldn’t budge even at the end” ??

And if that is correct ... is that just the business? Or anyone else have a problem with it?

Yeah...hey, hold my spot for me, while I go on bunch of visits. I’ll let you know on the eve of signing day. It really doesn’t add up, honestly. Wisconsin probably should have shitcanned his offer for playing it like that.

I could see that they both legitimately wanted him, as a prototypical guy they look for to develop into a 3-4 LB, and that they wanted a steal a top guy out of Minn.

Sucks that he never had serious interest in staying home, but also seems that it was somewhat a “let down” to end up in Madison as well. He just wasn’t a 5* guy, which I feel like is what it takes for the elites to come all the way out to Mpls for you.

It is the recruiting game you have to play with some of the higher rated or more flighty guys who want to play out the whole process as long as they can in hopes of getting the offer they truly want or the attention they desire.

Certainly feels like Johnson was hoping for some offers that never came. He is just fortunate Wisconsin was willing to hang onto the spot for him.

interesting discussion. Count me among those that were not impressed with his senior season. My son several years ago, playing in the same district against many of the same opponents had much better statistics playing LB, at 150 pounds! Of course, Johnson has the measurables and there are reasons why he became the state's top rated recruit. Perhaps Wisconsin will turn him into a beast. If they do, I will be mildly surprised based on what I see from this past season. I am also mildly surprised he was a four star and all that, after seeing him play. I don't pretend to be a scout or a D1 talent evaluator so a mild senior year statistically may just end up a quirky side note for him some day.

Who is to say Wisconsin didn't shitcan the offer for a time? They were waiting on other LBs and there are rumblings (from Burns and others) that he (for a time) did not have a committable Wisconsin offer. When other LBs went elsewhere, Wisconsin re-introduces itself and says they've been holding a spot for him. He takes the spot over his remaining options Nebraska and Oregon State. Nebraska coaches felt they had him two days ahead of signing day, I can tell you that.

I wonder if both MN and UW wanted him, he was waiting to see if he got more offers, Burns was wrong, and late in the cycle he decided UW was his best option and they happily took him? Could it be that simple?

It could be that simple. It’s obvious MN wanted him. It also appears as though he was playing the game up until the last minute. Waiting on a better offer, attention or uncertainty... it doesn’t matter, he’s a kid.

Could it be that MN wasn’t going to wait around on him and filled his spot earlier knowing he was likely not signing anyways?

It might also be the case of taking all his free official visit trips before he commits.

Same as the guy in southern MN that went to Iowa, taking a guess.

Was stringing is along, Fleck put a make or break on the table, to see if he was serious, and he declined, so we moved on. I like that move. I don’t like kids playing games.

Sure, but it isn’t that simple. He did take a ton of unofficials to the U and waited until the last hour to announce his commitment. Again, he’s a kid and it is a big decision.

This post makes me think you hate Cody Lindenberg.

Cody Lindenberg > Kaden Johnson

I did not listen yet to Burns recent podcast, may never do so. Not sure what he says about this Kaden Johnson debacle but as wrong as he was about Mo Ibrahim about 2 years ago I don't care what Burns says.

What did he say about Mo Ibrahim?

What did he say about Mo Ibrahim?
Well basically it was a prediction that Mo was not going to be a starting Big Ten running back. A good scout team running back but as far as a starting Gopher RB, not much. Someone else heard it I am sure.

He did say that (or something similar). He makes fun of himself for it now. I'm not a huge RB fan (not anti-RB either), but will listen to his podcasts during the season (I like listening to Derrick Burns when he is on). He does a fine job, IMO. I'm not gonna condemn him for having a poor prediction on a player. I think we can all relate to that.

He claims that some on the coaching staff thought the same thing, and had “given up on him.” I have a hard time believing they would give up on a player heading into his redshirt freshman year.

That's a weird prediction....

Burns pull some weird stuff out at times from what I can tell.

Like that guy you chat up at games and he busts out something about some qa coach or something like .... who knows these things / i'm not sure they're real.

Well played. Plato is less offensive then a lot of trolls that lurk around opposing teams message boards but he is clearly a Badger fan with no interest in Gopher football other then to take shots and talk up his Badgers.
