Maybe there is some truth to this, but I just don't see it working out. I think the culture that Fleck has built his success on runs in direct opposition with the glitz and glamour that exists in LA. Western Michigan to Minnesota seems like a logical progression. Minnesota to UCLA doesn't. Not to say this won't happen, I guess I just think if it does happen, it won't end well.
 


If people don't think he'd take that glamorous job if given the opportunity...
 


PJ leaves and we hire Mike Vrabel. Big 10 guy gets a chance to take a perpetually middling program to the next step. Or...he says hell no to the circus of college football and takes a paid year off before getting another NFL job in 2025.

While I don't think it's realistic, I'd be over the moon if we somehow landed Vrabel. I think it'd be more likely to see Pete Carroll take the UCLA job than to have Vrabel take our job.

We will be seeing Fleck run out of the tunnel again next year. Another year of headscratching timeouts... home sweet home.
 



It wouldn't shock me if PJ took that job if offered, but apart from being located in LA, I don't think the UCLA job has all this "glitz and glamour" that everyone is talking about. They've been an up and down program for most of the 21st century. USC takes up most of the glitz and glamour in that city.

Live in LA with lots of money would be an awfully fun change of pace from (usually) cold Minnesota, whatever people say. Even if just for five years.

I agree that the program isn't super glamorous on its own. The culture of the area still matters though. I don't think Fleck is gonna do great recruiting California with his binder of acronyms. Even if UCLA isn't glamorous right now, I have to imagine they'd like their next hire to take them to that level.

For most people , and maybe PJ yeah that’s probably true. On the other hand if I look at UCLA’s last several head coaches I don’t get the impression that people are banging down the door to coach there.

Just kidding. I believe this UCLA possibility has legs however. It will be interesting to see if it comes together quickly.

The people in LA don’t seem to agree with you. The largest chunk of the LA exodus has been people who have money.

I’m not saying I disagree with you. I lived in Southern California for years, met my wife there, got married there, etc.

I think the appeal for most folks has worn off.


That said the UCLA job is the precise kind of job PJ might ditch us for.

Move to LA, pay California taxes, coach the 2nd best college team in a city with 10 pro teams, and pay more for everything

or

Stay in Minnesota, keep your mansion on the lake, be the face of college football in the state, and use your established success to keep your ass out of the hotseat

Doesn't seem like as much of a no brainer as you make it seem.

Depends on the salary. MN taxes are high, too. If he gets a 50% pay bump, the 4% state income tax bump wouldn't feel too painful.
 

I'm a homer but I have a difficult time envisioning a successful move to California for Fleck.
1. His style of offense is much better suited for a midwest recruiting base compared to west-coast.
2. He's had a difficult time breaking through in the Big Ten West. How more more difficult would it be to break through in USC's shadow? Much less Oregon and Washington who are also west coast and had much more recent success.
3. UCLA is not blue-blood.

UCLA is not a blue blood. There are 8 bluebloods. I do agree with you that I don't see that being a deterrent to him taking the job.
