Royce White lawyer: Client tried to "protect himself" from guard

when is royce's trial today

Today at 9 AM - I work with Royce's uncle, but I have a short shift today and only work until noon, so if the trial is over by then, I'm sure he will be hearing back from his sister by then and let me in on what went down. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Come back and keep us updated?

White has learned nothing from it and will repeat the bad behavior over and over again because there has never been consequences for Royce White.

I somewhat disagree in that there have been consequences. Tubby isn't putting up with it and won't even let him practice.

I'll do my best, unfortunately I don't communicate with him outside of work. But again, if he hears back before I get off work at noon, I'll let you guys know.

I hope so too. It goes without saying but a lot of people are rooting for this kid to get his life together and start making good decisions.

I know it's a stupid question but does Royce's family recognize the urgency of his situation?

This is sad & pathetic, really. I get the feeling the cloud surrounding the program isn't leaving anytime soon. Buckle up for what could be a tough season, because this kind of stuff more often than not brings a team down. Tubby, his staff and his players (at least the ones who obey the law and follow team rules) have a heck of a job in front of them to prevent this season from going south if the White and (to a lesser extent) Mbakwe stuff lingers in the air all season.

Yeah, I agree SS, this could turn into the 'lost season.'

Well, I don't know about his parents, but his uncle thinks he's an idiot, haha. He basically has everything going for him, and he goes and messes up. Obviously, he is rooting for him, like most people, he just really thinks he needs to screw his head on straight. He also informed me that he hangs out with a very shady group of individuals in Minneapolis that aren't U students and are the same group that have gotten him in trouble in the past in high school.

Royce's Grandfather was quoted saying something like this. You know, I really, really, hope, that Tubby has seen enough of these types of kids to know or be able to convince Royce, that typically speaking, these kids aren't interested in Royce and what he can do for himself, only what Royce can do for them if he attains any kind of stardom.

Amazes me how everyone loves to kick a young man when he is down. Some think Royce is a punk and doesn't deserve any more chances. Some think he will never change and just drop him from the program. How about we just let Tubby handle this young man, since a) he actually knows Royce and b) he has experience inhandling troubled young men. I do know, that if Royce can be a solid citizen, I would like to see the program have the structure that would allow that to happen.

What's sad is that if, for some reason, Royce had a career ending type of injury and couldn't play basketball anymore, his " friends " would stick around for a while, but would probably leech on to someone else.

Unbelievable lawyer spin and unbelievable Royce-apologist spin.

How about Royce not steal anything? Is that too much to ask? Royce is the No. 1 person responsible for this becasue HE made the decision to steal the item in the first place. Had Royce paid for the item like a normal law-abiding citizen, none of this would have happened. To spin it that other people are to blame and that Royce is the victim just shows what our society has dumbed itself down to, with the favorite motto being, "If you can't find someone else to blame, you're just not looking hard enough."

"...that the security guard "was running at my client" and that White was "trying to protect himself," possibly making White an assault victim

I am picturing Pedro Martinez with Don Zimmer runnin at him...Maybe Royce just helped break his fall a little bit.

 bravo!

I would be willing to bet that just about every holer in here has something in their closet worse than shoplifting. Why do some say Royce needs to pay the price like everyone else that shoplifts? What do you think happens to Joe rube when he shoplifts for the first time? Jail? His name in headlines like Royce? White is paying a steep price. His lawyer is doing what anyone else's lawyer would do. Royce needs to grow up fast. Maybe he needs a change of scenery to get away from childhood friends. In any event, those that want to throw him to the wolves should askj themselves what they would do if it were their kid.

Nobody is saying to throw Royce White in jail for shoplifting (he has now pleaded quilty to it). Some of us are saying that this is enough to suspend him from the team for at least one year. And I am saying that it should be enough to kick him off the team for good - just like the University of Illinois did when their top pitcher stole $300 in stereo equipment several months ago. There needs to be serious consequences for theft. Royce White should not ever have the privelege of representing the U of M in a Gopher BB uniform.

Tubby is going to do what is in Tubby's best interests and make his decision on what is best for the basketball team. If he believes that Royce can contribute to this team and help the team to win then he will keep him on the team. For this to happen Tubby must feel that he is in control of Royces behavior and that Royce will perform in a manner which Tubby approves. If Tubby feels that Royce will be a distraction to the team then Royce will be dismissed. I believe it is more about what Royce is currently doing than anything Royce has already done.
