ROCK BOTTOM HAS BEEN ACHIEVED

Didn't see the game (or the previous two) d/t them being on paid sites or channels, and live almost 9 hours from Williams Arena, so don't have much 1st hand knowledge...BUT...I remain somewhat optimistic that we'll have a decent season. Prior to the 1st game I thought we might win 19-20 games before the BTT. Maybe now it's 18-19. Who on this board wouldn't take 18-19 wins (plus whatever we might get in the BTT or any other postseason tournament)?
What reasons do you have to think that? Honest question.

If you had watched the 1st half yesterday, you wouldn't retain your optimism. It's literally the worst offense I've ever seen played by anyone older than 7th grade. And it wasn't just because they couldn't make shots. They had no flow. No idea. No clue. That's coaching.

The only reason they weren't down by 20 at half time is because North Texas couldn't make a shot either and we played OK defense. But this offense is just awful. All you have to do is stop Garcia and they're done. They will likely lose at least 2 more non-conference games and struggle to win any B1G games. I'd put the over/under win total at 11.5 and that's probably optimistic.

Johnson deserved another year with the guys he had on the roster last year....that team was showing signs of life and improvement....had the guys who could have come back returned Johnson would have deserved a chance to see what he could do with that group.

When the mass exodus happened a case could definitely have been made to fire Johnson at that point but they chose not too.

So now we are in the position of letting this year play out. If Johnson fails again there is no chance he will be brought back for a 5th year.
And there you have it.
Johnson "deserved" another year.

Genius.

And to top it off, now we must let this year "play out."

Some of you won't be happy until you've driven this program into extinction.

Give me a break, last year's squad showed improvement and was on a good trajectory with some young players who were developing......had that squad stayed together then Johnson had absolutely done enough to warrant another year with THAT team.

I literally said a case could have been made for firing him after the roster turned over....the people who actually make those decisions chose not to. So now we are at a point where we have to let the year play out. Sure they could fire him right now but that really won't accomplish anything other than creating more chaos within the program.

I don't have any say in what the program does....I could bitch and moan constantly like some of you choose to but that seems like a miserable way to go through life so I'm not going to.

That is not what they are saying at all.

The qualifier was if the players had stayed. You can either agree or disagree with that opinion.

The players DID leave.

The qualifer was if that happened, a case could have been made to fire him.

"But they chose not to" implies "I would have chosen to", the outcome you are advocating.

Personally, I would have pulled the plug as well. There were indications of locker room dissention going on in addition to the poor performance. Rarely have I seen leaders bounce back from something like that.

The year will play out. That is a mathematical certainty as this point, whether we like it or not. I'd be hard pressed to find anyone that likes that, but, it is what it is. My opinion is he doesn't finish the season. Pure speculation, though.

Ya know it is faster to type "I didn't read the post I am quoting I just want to spout nonsense."

And before you say it, Johnson should have been fired long ago.

I'm with you MNVC. I've been a CBJ-skeptic/hater since day 1, but the team was much better last year than the previous seasons.

If you're going to fire someone after going 19-15 and 9-11 in the Big 10 (with a 7 game improvement in the Big 10), then you should have fired him before the season started. When the exodus was occurring this offseason, maybe it was time to make a move (it probably was), but the timing was strange.

More or less, we're stuck with him this season. I don't think he finishes the season because we should want a head start in looking for our next coach.

Typically you don't fire a coach mid season unless the players start to quit on him. A few of them did last year for their own selfish reasons, but for the most part we had great effort. We'll see with this batch.

There are still a handful of posters here determined to push this phony "Ben Johnson Apologist/Fan club" narrative.

Had they fired Johnson after the players left this off season I don't think you would have heard anyone complaining or saying it was a bad/unfair decision.

Best case scenario remains Johnson figuring it out and succeeding but that seems highly unlikely at this point. So you let things play out and either make the move in the later part of the season or as soon as it is over if he fails again.

Was looking at Payne and Ola-Joseph's stats to start the year. Payne's look nearly identical to last year although his minutes per game average has gone down a little.

Ola-Joseph has started 2 of Cal's 3 games but is only playing like 10 minutes a game and not scoring much. Maybe the grass isn't always greener....

Carrington is starting for Tulsa so move seems to have worked out well for him so far.

That's not even what he said. Deserved came with certain expectations, which were not met. He goes right on to say he could have been fired.

The negative crowd around here really doesn't care what you say.....they will just find a way to twist it into the narrative they are pushing.

I don't get it, either. Johnson is the coach now, and will be until he is not. Posters can stomp their feet and throw tantrums until they are purple, but it won't change what is in motion this season.

Do I feel he should have continued into year 4? Based on the exodus, no.
Do I feel he'll manifest a miracle this year? Based on what I've seen so far, no.
Can I accept the reality we are in right now this moment and hope for the best? Yes. My options are pretty damn limited at this point.
Is it going to be a sh*tshow? Time will tell, but probably yes.
Will he (or should he) be the coach next season? Unequivocally, no, unless a miracle happens, and I'd still probably need some convincing to keep him.

Ben has to go……. Will be another wasted year. Coyle needs to grow a sack and go against the woke… liberal U of Mn and hire a real coach!

I doubt it. Coaches come to Minnesota to kill their career, not enhance it.
Dumb. Who has come here and killed their career? Historically, coaches have done well here until Monson, who really was set up to struggle with the recruiting sanctions he faced. However, he did as well here as he did at Long Beach for a lot of years, so he was what he was - just an average coach. The U didn't kill his career. Tubby replaced him and was doing fine until a dumb AD decided to let him go without a plan. We ended up with a great guy who wasn't ready to coach in Pitino. While he had some bad luck, and really made some poor choices as a young coach, he just wasn't ready for the Big Ten. The U didn't kill his career, he wasn't ready to coach in this league. And then, as much as I really like Ben as a person, he's not it as a head coach - wasn't ready to be a head coach, can't coach offense. He will be an effective assistant coach in the right program in the future.

I'd be very surprised if Ben was let go before the season was finished, no matter what happens. Coyle won't do that I wouldn't think.

I still think this team will win a couple of games it probably shouldn't and maybe get to 15-20 wins. Maybe we win 10.

Either way, we will ride this out and then they'll likely make the change after the year.

I don't feel upset at this point as the expectations are so low for me. I'll still watch the games as I'll always watch.

Need to get a coach in here who actually believes he can win here. That shouldn't be too much to ask.

I wasn’t as high on last year’s roster. Hawkins and Christy showed improvement. The others that left did not.

That's exactly what should have happened. He "deserved" another year with that team. Without it, not at all.
Hawkins did wait awhile to go into the portal so that might have been a reason why. Most P5 hires had already occurred by early April. Hawkins went into the portal on April 22.

This sums me up.

I want to win BADLY. It absolutely kills my attitude and ruins my winter when Gopher Hoops suck.

I'm an optimist but also a realist. Every game is an opportunity to get better and improve. This season is shaping up poorly and I've lost pretty much all faith in CBJ. But the team is the team, and they're our team.

Throwing a hissy fit on Gopherhole is pathetic and tiresome. Pretty certain most of those posters are the exact opposite of someone I'd want to have a couple beers and bullshit with.

Let the season play out, either we have a semi miraculous turnaround and make the tournament, or we'll have a new coach come March.

Did you watch the game against North Texas?

Did you watch the game against North Texas?
For contrast, I just watched the Rutgers-Monmouth game. Good grief. They are both SO much quicker than the Gophers. Water vs ice. Both were excellent penetrating teams. Other than Garcia, can we penetrate at all? Barring a miracle (Williams and Cochran??) it’s going to be a long, cold year.

I see your view. That said- Musselman never coached in college again. Dutcher never coached in college again. Clem never coached in college again. Monson moved down a level after he did great at Gonzaga. Tubby retired. Pitino moved down a level. So other than Mussy coaching the in the ABA and then the TWolves no one had their career enhanced coming here either. It has not been a coach friendly atmosphere here.

Sorry we all need to wake up and have the difficult realization that Ben just cannot handle this - good guy but just not capable - which begs the bigger question regarding Coyle - this was his hire and it’s been a disaster since day one (gave my tix up because it’s just a non watchable product) - also another
6-6 football team on the horizon and we for some reason continue to be satisfied with this - Coyle has been incompetent and there is no improvement on the horizon
