Tomorrow if Flip were announced as new head coach- what is the excitement level in this town? Do season ticket sales increase? Does fundraising increase?

Tomorrow if Grant is announced as new head coach- ask those same questions.

This is a program that needs a big bump right now in enthusiasm and funding. Practice facility is needed. Face lift on the Barn is needed. Access to private jets - maybe that's needed.

Anyone who is honest will have to say those questions tilt dramatically toward Flip. Now Grant has to be so much better of a coach than Flip Saunders that he overcomes these other deficits. I don't see it.

+1. You don't fire Tubby Smith and then hire Grant. The Gopher fan base would be seriously UNDERWHELMED.

You don't hire coaches to overwhelm or underwhelm the fan base, you hire coaches to win games. If this is part of the process, Teague is not doing his job. These kinds of immaterial bumps don't matter, they don't last, they are fleeting.

If Teague thinks Tubby would be the better coach, he should be the guy. If Teague thinks Grant should be the coach, he should be the guy.

Why would any of us care about the bump we'd get around town for the program. You want a real bump, WIN.

Zero proof that Grant is a better coach than Flip or even Tubby. I think that if Grant is hired this is a nod to who Teague has a relationship with and is comfy with and trying to look like he's not just following the local lead. You are going to have to get the local players to be your base here and I think Flip has a better chance
at that- or at least a HUGE head start. That's where excitement and a bump does matter. Never more than this year when we have the best crop of local players we have ever had.

Let me start by saying I have been going to Williams for 35 years and have been through plenty. I would have been thrilled with Shaka but if we hire a stiff from the SEC when we have FLIP right in our back yard...I will lose my mind. NT, sometimes you need to check your ego at the door and just go with what the people want. You need momentum for everything your planning and this is not the way to get it. I would say most of us like your style and commend you for letting Tubby go but don't SCREW this hire up. Flip WOULD land 2 of the big 3 and possible all 3. Remember, these guys all are thinking NBA and wants a mentor who can prepare them. Heck, Jahlil Okafor might even sign-up for the Flipper. Hire Flip and we could be cutting down the nets in 2-3 years.

What?

That's not what I'm arguing. I'm arguing that Teague should choose his next coach based off who he thinks is the better choice. We've already debated who I think is the better coach ad naseum. It's not clear either way, they have completely different careers. One of them coached VCU and in the SEC, the other is an NBA guy. You can't compare the two.

My point is that this hire isn't about the next month of "buzz" around the Cities, it's not about the 2014 recruiting class, it's about the U of MN. Teague needs to make the choice based on who he thinks is the better coach.

Again - I'm not saying Grant is the better coach, that's NOT the point.

Am I being trolled?

This!!!

With Shaka gone, Flip is my #1, #2, #3, #4, and as you could guess #5. The fan base (minus Bob) would be more than ecstatic, the boosters would be happy, and based on his coaching career, minus the Washington debacle, has never failed.

I don't know what is going on with Bob. He's never been this far off base before and is totally possessed over it. Very strange.

Bareiro had a good point on the air last night about Teague and Flip. He opined, and I agree, that if Teague were to hire Grant or someone else he brings in, then he can be the power broker and stay in command. If he hires Flip, who has local street cred (although little nationally), would Teague have the same control over him? Or would Flip, as a very established coach, be able to say this is the way I'm going to run my program. I think Teague will prefer to get "his guy" and not the "fans guy" or the "local guy". So I have real doubts they will seriously consider Flip unless the top 6 guys say no...

Dang it, how long have we been saying that there's way more to major college coaching than just coaching. There is. This is such a key hire. We need the total package.

BGA1....Flip is option D. You obviously haven't met Teague. This isn't Paul Giel making the hire.

YES.

HIRE FLIP NOW. TODAY. ( sorry for the caps but I am getting ticked off at hearing all these coach names that make me laugh or puke )

I'm fine with him being option D as long as A, B or C are big time hires that make us say- "Now THAT was worth paying a $2.5 million buyout for!"

I don't think Teague will hire Flip but he would be #1 on my realistic candidate list. If the FB or Hockey jobs were open and there was an equivalent to Flip in those sports, I don't doubt that Teague would hire him. However this is basketball and the sense is Teague and Ellis consider themselves very skilled at finding hidden talent in the CB coaching circles so getting their own guy that they can take credit for is important to them.

Flip IMO is the absolute fall-back plan if their top 6 or 7 candidates say no. Even then I'm not sure they don't take a gamble on some assistant CB coach and go that route.

There is no skill in hiring Flip. Teague wouldn't get credit for that hire that he's likely desiring.

It is hard to get a read on Flip. He is 58 and set for life. He is on ESPN, KFAN, and twitter. I can't tell if he is that motivated for the job that he is showing so much interest in the gig or if he just can't stand his family and needs to keep himself busy. Is he motivated or despirate?

And frankly anyone saying Teague needs to do this, this, and this with a coach right away is wrong.

Minnesota probably isn't going to be Teague's last AD job, the guy is definitely ambitious.

The best way for him to make his resume look better is to do things his way and make them work.

Don't worry about Teague's motivations or methods, the interests of both the fanbase and the administration in the athletic department are aligned.

Anyone expecting Flip will be disappointed.

Then who? Do tell, Westcoast. I think most of us "expect" no one, but as Minnesota fans, we expect a disaster. The process is going on three days old and not done, so it must be chaos in the AD's office, eh? I'll say it again, going for a guy with no midwest connections would be a disaster hire in my eyes, and I am not hearing any names, other than Flip, who qualifies on that criterion and is a realistic possibility (Stevens and Williams are unrealistic to me). I am now expecting disaster.

Is this a serious statement?

Flip is like hiring Marc Trestman. I would not object to it, but I just don't think he resinates outside of MN. I'm sure Teague knows that.

Yes and no. Flip has more name recognition nationally than you would think, people know who he is and he is a respected guy in the sports world.

I would love to see Flip it just seems to run contrary to everything Teague wants to do if he brought him in.

Honestly, this is the kind of mentality that is hurting the U more than anything.

The first criterion for a coach should be is he a winner. Stop with the inferiority complex about whether someone would stay and start only think about who would win.

I'm not so sure. I think if you ask nationally, most people would assume his only connection to Minnesota is coaching the Timberwolves. I think people would think, "Wow, how did Minnesota convince a 16 year NBA veteran."

Biggest difference between Trestman and Saunders: Flip made a name for himself being a head coach in the NBA. Trestman has made a name for himself being an assistant coach and a head CFL coach. One guy was the man in the highest level of his league, and the other was an assistant and a head coach in the minor leagues.
