Revenue: Flip versus Grant

I don't know what is going on with Bob. He's never been this far off base before and is totally possessed over it. Very strange.

I'm not anymore possessed over it than anyone who is pro-Flip. I only talk about Flip in his threads. I'm not starting threads to rip on Flip and I don't try to shoehorn the debate into my point on Flip.

In fact, in this thread, all I said is that Teague should hire a coach based on who he thinks will win the most games. If he thinks Flip will win more games, he should hire Flip. If he thinks it's someone else, he should try to hire someone else.

I'm not even ripping on Flip in this thread at all. I'm just saying the criteria for a new coach should be their ability to get the program to win games and that's it.

Dang it, how long have we been saying that there's way more to major college coaching than just coaching. There is. This is such a key hire. We need the total package.

What else is there?

Doesn't winning cure everything?

I'm not so sure. I think if you ask nationally, most people would assume his only connection to Minnesota is coaching the Timberwolves. I think people would think, "Wow, how did Minnesota convince a 16 year NBA veteran."

Biggest difference between Trestman and Saunders: Flip made a name for himself being a head coach in the NBA. Trestman has made a name for himself being an assistant coach and a head CFL coach. One guy was the man in the highest level of his league, and the other was an assistant and a head coach in the minor leagues.

Flip might be a fantastic hire. I am probably wrong on my take on him, everyone else seems to disagree with me. Usually when you're alone on a subject, it's not them it's you. However, you are overestimating what people will think nationally. It might be talked about for a second or two on ESPN because they know him. But it would be about the equivelent as if we found out that Cincinatti hired Mike Fratello. Flip's name recognition is big in the cities, he's just another former NBA coach/color analyst type to the rest of the country.

I'll give you that he'd be a splash in the Cities though.

No it doesn't. I don't want our program to be known for thug fights with other players, for rape charges, for shoplifting and theft, for academic cheating. I want our program to be known for recruiting and retaining good students, good citizens, and team players. I want it to be a program that Minnesotans can be proud to support and not one that wins by cheating and avoiding disclosure. And we can win by focusing on those things. We've had many of those good kids recently, four-year guys who behave and play team ball (e.g. Sampson, Hoffarber, Williams) and I admire them for it. Let's continue that trend and keep the program proper.

Yep, you're 100% right. I don't want a dirty program. I was just getting at things like style of play, buzz around the Cities, etc., don't matter. I want a clean and winning program. Whoever brings it, I am cool with. I don't care if we get mocked and ridiculed when he is hired and I don't care if there is a parade in their honor. If we win and do so cleanly, I am on board!
