Says the U has offered the Mankato West QB a (2012) scholarship. Also mentioned that his dad played for Becky and was raised with dream of playing for Wisky.

Kill said he only wants kids who want to be a Gopher. This will be get interesting.

Very true, if Wisconsin offers, do you think he turns it down?

Probably not, but Kill is right to challenge them for every in-state prospect.

Exactly. You don't ignore someone just because their dad played for another school. They can drive 1h 20min to watch him play every home game or drive 5-6 hours to do it. We'll see how it plays out. Will be interesting.

He said his dream is to play for the BADgers.

Thing is, what if Wisconsin doesn't offer? Now Minnesota is a extremely enticing situation for young Nelson.

It is really smart to start early on Nelson for a couple reasons. He is a good prospect and it would be really nice for the U to get this kid. It doesn't sound like he would likely turn down an offer from Wisconsin, however, after we offer him and try to get a good idea where he stands, it will be easier for us to move on (if he isn't interested).

Mollberg in Detroit Lakes is another FBS caliber QB (IMO) and he has been pretty vocal about wanting to play for the Gophers. If Nelson gets offered and doesn't seem overly excited about being a Gopher, I think the U will move pretty quick and lock up Mollberg.

My dream was to play for Michigan...then I actually looked closely at the school and wanted no part of them. Go Gophers.

Me too. I saw them in all these Rose Bowls and then I went and saw Foggie and Thompson play and I was changed forever.

Wow. Possibly two of my all time favorite Gophers.

I know nothing about Nelson, but his stat sheet said he passed for less than 700 yards this year, right? Would he switch positions, or am I missing something? I'd rather have Mollberg in a second.

*edit: Whoops, the 669 yards I saw was rushing. Passing was 2,439.

He has the been the starting QB since his freshman year at Mankato West, who rarely if ever have freshman starters on there team. That it was QB, the most vital position on the team says something about him. His sophomore year he led the team to the state championship game while passing for 2000 yards, and many, many more on the ground. 700 is incorrect for this year.

How about in conspiracy theory fashion, the U really prefers Mollberg but would like Wisconsin to use up a scholarship on Nelson, so we offer nelson to entice Becky to make an offer. Now I have never seen Nelson play so he could be good or mediocre or bad but I thought a little deep thought recruiting strategy might fit as we head into the coldest wek of the year.

I don't think the U really prefers Mollberg, but I do think that the U likes Mollberg (Fisch wanted to offer him as a SO). I think Nelson is considered to be a better prospect and the U would probably prefer him (or possibly both), however, by offering Nelson so early they are essentially forcing Bucky's hand. Bucky will have to decide whether they like him or if they want to go elsewhere with their QB for that class.

KU4LIFE, I remember you frequented the board during the Insight Bowl a couple years ago, what has brought you back?? Enjoy your comments.

Molberg will get a Gopher offer soon and this discussion will be over. Love what the coaches are doing, really hitting the 2012 kids hard and early.

Yeah there is no doubt Molberg will get a Gopher offer as well. From what I've read both Nelson and Molberg are BSC QB's.

Yep, they both are. I think Nelson might be a more difficult "get" because of his ties to the dark side and he hasn't been as open about wanting to be a Gopher as Mollberg. But I would be happy with either or preferably both.

Well when I lived in Lawrence (KS), many of my good friends were from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. So I spent a lot of time up in Minnesota. Then again, I spend time up in Wisconsin also since I have sister that lives in Madison of all places. lol

I've also personally have known Coach Kill a little from his Emporia State days as my grandparents were big booster there. I started to come back around this board after Brewster was gone and following the coaching search. Just has made it easier to stick once Kill was named head coach. I also follow BIG 10 ball as much or more than BIG XII ball... just don't have much interest in the South schools outside of Oklahoma. Frankly I feel Nebraska pain. lol I'm a Kansas fan, but it gets boring sometimes just following one school on these boards.

Good to hear from you Johnny, come around more often (especially during NSD :) )

Nelson's picture on GI shows him wearing a BADger hat. It doesn't look right on him but then a sconnie hat does not look good on any MINNESOTA kid.

Thats because the picture was taken at a Badger game. The kid was also raised in Madison until 5 years ago. Will probably be a pretty interesting recruitment to follow.

Can anyone give some insight on their games? By looking at their stats, it appears Mollberg is the better runner while Nelson is the better passer.

I don't know mol berg at all, but i've heard that Nelson is in a passing spread offense similar to what the patriots were doing prior to this year and what gb is doing. A lot of 4 & 5 receiver sets out of the gun.

Philip Nelson

Just to clear it up, Philip's first full year of starting was as a Sophomore. He started one (maybe more) game on West's state championship team as a Freshman while Ray Teachout was out. He did pass for four TDs against Albert Lea as a Freshman.

He also does play in a spread formation, but I think his skill set would fit great with going under center as well. He has all the intangibles. I knew this kid was going to be something special while coaching him in 8th grade, and it has been great watching him develop into the player he is now. Good luck to Phil on whatever school he chooses. Let's just hope he picks the right one.

As a Mankato native, I've been paying close attention to Philip since he's played at West. From everything I hear, he'd be sold on Wisco unless it would become obvious that he'd be buried on the depth chart.

I'm sure Wisconsin is aware how badly he wants to be a Badger, and knows they can shop around for other 2012 QB's and come back for Nelson if they really need him.

Either way, it sure seems the young man has developed nicely during his family's stay in Mankato over the past five years but I sure don't blame him for his 'Sconnie ties. Born and raised in Madison, with a sister already at UW and the family planning to move back following his senior year. Seems like a done deal to me if Wisco extends the offer.

I don't think I want a badger fan on the team. Also, how excited would we be to get him if Wisconsin doesn't even think highly enough of him to even offer. I think we can do better than a qb from Mankato...what is that nine man? (sarcasm)
