Everyone involved with the Gophers should be embarrassed — no, humiliated — to accept a “reward” for winning five of 12, for winning two of eight (over Illinois 2-6 and Purdue 1-7) in the conference.

Yeah, but how about our fine seniors? Those lads got their justified reward last season with the Citrus Bowl, after winning eight of 12, and going 5-3 in the Big Ten.

Doesn't the B1G require us to accept a bowl invite?

If a football game ever made feel humiliated, I would feel humiliated.

Can anyone explain how getting selected for a bowl game changes how the regular season went?

Should just let the team vote. If the players want to play then let lace up. I'm in the boat that it's embarrassing. But its probably because I'm still just disappointed in the season.

There are still fans out there that equate success with making a bowl game and there are probably those that fear those fans will revise things and act like it was a huge accomplishment to get to another bowl game.

Honestly I don't want to see 5-7 teams getting bowl bids but it is the nature of the system we have now where bowl games are pretty much just big participation trophies instead of accomplishments like they once were. At this point they may as well just add a bunch more so that everyone can go regardless of what record they finish with.

Reusse is so predictable, of course he thinks this.

Simple solution. You think the Gophers shouldn't go to a bowl and it's embarrassing then don't watch. After everything that's happened to the athletic dept this last year I think going to a bowl would be at the bottom of the embarrassment scale. I don't see it as a big deal.

There are 128 D1 team.
There are 40 bowl games..that takes 80 teams.....do the math.

The only ones mouthing 'reward' are the ones pissing and moaning........like Patrick.
When there were 2,3,4,8 bowl games... it was probably a reward.

It's a chance to play another game.......no one is claiming a participation trophy.

The thing that needs to change is the minor bowls requiring the teams to purchase X amount of tickets.
Get rid of that and the number of bowl games will take care of itself.

Nothing more embarrassing than quitting when you could be playing another game.

There's a lot to be embarrassed about when it comes to Gopher football in my lifetime, going (or not going) to a meaningless bowl ranks far, far down that list.

Well said. I come from an era when they called these types of competition loser bracket games. I guess the politically correct thing to do is call it a friendship bowl.

Bowl games stopped being "rewards" many years ago. People should stop getting worked up over them. It's nothing more than an end of the year party for most teams. Let them have their fun.

there also might be bonus' for the coaching staff if they make a bowl which is not deserved in anyway. As much as I would watch them if the played another game I also believe they do not deserve it and it would make some good motivation for next year

The way I see it, what is more embarrassing is the Norwood Teague fiasco.

After all that went down this season, let the kids play in a bowl game to enjoy a trip together and to gain extra practices for those returning next season.

I frankly don't care what Reusse thinks.

I can't believe how negative the press is on this topic. They act as if the coaches are talking it up and pushing for an invite.

It's pretty clear to me, if we get invited we accept it. Why would the leaders of a sports team turn down an opportunity to practice more, play a fun game and develop he young guys?

i think its great that the gopher have a chance

its kind of rewarding them for the tough schedule

Patrick said last week that if the Gophers were "bowl bound" it would be a no brainer mockfest.

Relish the mocking.

It's the system...not the Gophers.

Since the NCAA is not in a position to limit bowl creation...it is certainly more equitable to add a bowl game for everyone to even it out...so I say we need some twenty or so MORE bowl games.

'Nuff said.

More mocking encouraged.

Agree with this, if they want to go, seniors and all and give it one last go, let em.
If they want to call it a day and regroup for spring ball, then that's another option.

In the end, hard to give up free extra practices with a very young team.

Players don't get to "vote" on such things. Ridiculous concept.

I'll take the extra game anytime.

Have to disagree with Patrick. Nothing could be more embarrassing than your head coach (Brew) belly flopping on the sidelines after a loss. That's pretty much when I knew Brew was in over his head as a BIG coach.

Extra practices will make us better. It is without a doubt good for the program.

When it comes to humiliation, this reporter accepted a paycheck every week this year and there is no plausible explanation for that.

The only thing that would be humiliating would be if a school paid out a bonus to a coach or AD for getting an invite to bowl after going 5-7.

This really defies all logic. There will be 5-7 teams that go to bowls this year...why is it specifically embarrassing for the Gophers? It would be a little embarrassing if the team/school/fans were bragging about it, but I haven't seen any of that. In the end, it will be a cool experience for college kids (many probably have never been to NYC (assuming they go to the Pinstripe Bowl)). Seriously what is the difference between a 5-7 team playing a meaningless bowl and a 6-6 team playing in a meaningless bowl? According to Patrick, this season would have been less embarrassing if we had scheduled a creampuff to begin the year instead of the preseason #2 team in the country.

Reusse is, once again, pandering to idiots.

Don't know if they voted, but Claeys said in an interview that the players wanted to accept if offered.

No, no one can explain that. These are just the knee jerk reactions of a few silly purists trying to apply some sort of principle to a situation where it doesn't apply. They don't have enough .500 or better teams to fill the bowl schedule so they have to pick a small number of losers to participate. The same thing happens on a frequent basis in professional sports playoffs. More often than not, at least one losing team makes the NBA playoffs.

Many of Pat's articles are embarrassing. Maybe he should not accept writing any more stories.

Good point.

It's like some people are making it about themselves. "I don't think they deserve it so I don't think they should play because I would be embarrassed." If the coaching staff feels it would make them a better team and program to get the extra practices, extra game and chance to go on a trip together then they should do it. It's that simple to me.
