Reusse Down on Pitino--hmmmm..... he must be a good hire then~!

Except for hiring Flip that's really it isn't it? Looking at the kid's resume can't say that I'm disappointed in the hire. Honestly though, it's the same type of hire that Kill was. The trade-off was age and some big time school experience for Kill's longer experience and long time staff. Teague's reputation of "being connected", of being a "real basketball guy" or of knowing what he was doing all along isn't helped by that list of candidates you laid out. Rich seems like the best of that, rather uninteresting bunch.

Kill's an unknown. A work in progress. Seems to know what he wants but he's won a grand total of four Big Ten games in two seasons. This season he gets some more of "his guys" playing, but loses most of his Defensive impact players. He's got three things going for him up here. He's not Brewster, his experience and he's not Brewster.

The biggest thing young Mr.Pittino has going for him up here? He wasn't hired by Maturi.

Lordy, can you image what the reaction would be if MATURI had hired Pittino the Younger? Ruesse would be writing what a GREAT hire it was because all the posters around here would be screaming bloody murder!

Here's to a long and successful run for Rich, not drinking to Mr.Teague just yet.

:drink:

Maturi would have hired Flip without talking to anyone else.

Hey then you could get over your "You people should't want FLIP" obsession, you'd have plenty of company too. The "We demand FLIP!" crowd would hate him if Maturi made the hire.

Doesn't change things though. Norwood was turned down by as many or more guys that Maturi was, supposedly in both cases naturally. If Teague was down to that bunch or Pittino, we've been sold a big bill of goods about how good and "connected" Mr.Teague was. Hope that doesn't apply to his fund raising skills too.

I haven't read anything about the type of money and the length of the contract. Anyone know? (Probably in another thread, or I missed it.)

Pat is one of the dumbest blocks of cheese in the fridge. He should be ecstatic. Norwood gave him a book of stories from now until Junior moves on. He couldn't ask for a better hire.

Does this hire free up Flip's kid to join the staff? jk'ing

Hey - I wouldn't put it past them - with the nepotism issue behind him Ryan might be the guy to appease the booster donors. Old guard new guard sort of thing.

You can't make that argument that we should ignore him because of his name. Why? Because often times the son follows in the dad's footsteps. Did we make the decision because of his name? Maybe. But there are countless examples of the son who followed in his dad's footsteps.

How is his resume much different than Enfield?

You could easily make the argument that he did just as good of a job last season as Enfield. 18 wins with that squad was a miracle. They had 3 guys on scholarship when he arrived.

If you hated the Enfiled hire, I could see hating this hire. Most people seemed ok with Enfield, so you'd think those same people would at least be ok with Pitino.

I didn't hate Enfield. I would have been okay with him as well.

The thing Pitino brings are the keys the executive suite. Because of his family name he has 'connections' these other guys will never have. Or not until a lot later. Junior will still have to prove himself but he is starting on second base when everyone else is still in the on deck circle.

It sucks - but that is life.

FTR this is a huge crap shoot - but if we play safe we stay mediocre so why not? If it blows up Teague is toast too. Haters gotta like that.

Pitino's offense is not a gimmick [that is absolutely unworkable in B1G]

He must have brought in a couple of JC's. Looking at the teams stats that's the way it appears.

4 NAIA National Titles . Pittino has his hands full . Do Not think he can get away with bringing in transfers who were kicked out of other programs. He will need to succeed the right way here...Managing talent often requires more experience ,I look at Alford at Iowa he had some trouble makers there who he did not clamp down on because they had game, he learned from his mistakes on how to run a team at Iowa and now is at UCLA

The new coach is Pitino P I T I N O

From Gophersports:

April 3, 2013

Richard Pitino has been selected as the finalist for the position of University of Minnesota men's head basketball coach. Pitino and the university have a reached an understanding in principle on the key terms of an agreement, according to Director of Athletics Norwood Teague.

The terms of the agreement will be finalized later this week. Details of the agreement and further information regarding a scheduled press conference will be forthcoming.

Of course we've had PLENTY of people around here the last week telling us what's really going on. Maybe they can enlighten us.

Love the hire but I don't get why everyone hates on Reusse. He's been watching Minnesota sports his entire life and there hasn't been many positives...He's obviously going to be critical. Reusse loves Gopher bball, if you have followed him through his career you would know.

Love the hire? FYI.... This is Richard Patino (18-14) out of the Sun Belt......not Rick.

Was that the people who hated Maturi, Tubby, Flip, people who wanted Flip, Ryan, Reusse, Saul or Norwood? Or are there people who already hate Mr.Pitino? It's getting pretty confusing and it's been pretty "hateful" around here...

I know a coach that went 17-13 in his first year as a head coach, in the Missouri Valley Conference. And he was 10 years older than Rich.

Since Reusse and Parski hate the hire and 19 loves Reusse - mabye 19 and Parski will become best buds. Poor Dr. Don may get left in the lurch by 19:)

I can't break up the Doc Don - Station18 relationship....they live together.

Oh the irony of you distinguishing who the new coach is and is not.

It is Rich Pitino !

I can stand Reusse but I have to agree with him this one time. If this guys name was Ed Jones would any of you even care about him? Don't lie you would hate this choice. C'mon this is a total (we better hurry up and hire a guy who will not say no) move!

Move to the TT board please

That IS the Main reason he got the job. He does not have close to the resume that High End Big Ten wannabe Basketball team would look for in a HC. Maybe he is a super special coach who can recruit studs to a non descript program located in the frozen north and lacking a practice facility

I do not get the fixation on his name being a factor. Look at his resume and compare it to Shaka Smart when he was hired at VCU. Very similar expect that Little Pitino had a chance to work under Big Pitino along with his time at UF. Shaka only spent time at UF and people would have pooped their pants if we hired Shaka. Will he be as good? No one knows but he has a similar history.

Wonder what the over/under on Sid calling him P"eye"tino at the first press conference
