Report: B1G Tournament Will Move To Washington D.C.

How about Purdue I always assumed in Indy they would have a great turn out?

Purdue not in the same category as the four, I don't think. The crowds from Illinois, IU, MSU, and OSU (and usually Wisconsin) always stand out. Purdue crowds don't really stand out, even in Indy. That's my impression, anyways.

Does Maryland have pictures of a naked Jim Delany riding a rabid 400 pound pig bareback?

I would be disappointed if this was true. If it is, I hope it isn't annual.

This blog writer, Luke Zimmerman, claims: Though hardly the relatively geographic center location that Indianapolis is nor having the familiarity of Chicago, Washington D.C. represents one of the single largest conglomerations of Big Ten alumni anywhere in the country.

I would guess the rankings of Metro Areas by Big Ten Alumni is:

1. Chicago
2. MSP
3. NYC
4. Washington

Moving it there once, or once a decade is one thing. If they move it there permanently, Delaney will be run out of town. As east coast sites go, Philly makes more sense. Reasonably central to PSU, Rutgers and Maryland. DC is a huge home court advantage to Maryland and not many others will go.

DC probably has the largest concentration of Big Ten alumni of any city outside the midwest. It also is easily accessible by 3 major airports, rail up and down the east coast, and has a zillion hotels. I bet the arena would be packed.

Edit: Oops, see this already was addressed by someone, with cite.

Edit2: DC had a huge concentration of B1G alumni before Maryland even joins the conference. I wasn't even referring to Maryland. When you add Maryland, DC may well have more than anyone.

I kind of doubt MSP would have the 2nd most B1G alumni. I'd bet both NYC and D.C. have more.

Rotate every five years between New York, DC, Indy, Chicago and Minneapolis. That would be awesome!

Delany has said the B1G tourney could be held on the East Coast (i.e., DC or NYC) up to 1/3 of the time. I expect that the B1G will have their tourney at Barclays Center in Brooklyn at some point in addition to the Verizon Center in DC. But the ACC has Barclays booked for 2017 and 2018.

I would put Seattle and possibly the Bay area and Los Angeles above MSP or concentration of B1G alumni.

As for the BTT, I don't like the idea on principle, but I guess once in a decade I can tolerate.

That actually sounds about perfect. Screw Detroit, no one wants to go there.

Will the New Vikings stadium be basketball friendly? Or are you guys thinking Target Center for MPLS?

Report: Jim Delany has jumped the shark.

Ha! Perhaps I'm the only one who gets this reference. Great snarky comment!

I'd like to keep the tourney in the midwest instead of nearly out of territory for the B1G. Detroit, Chicago, Indy or even Cleveland would be preferable before D.C.

I love the idea of DC. For a lot of the B1G, you have to fly either way. What do you think is a cheaper flight for people in MSP. DC, or Indy. I would bet DC by a long shot. Plus, there is so much to do in DC, and it is an amazing city. Not to mention it is a short train ride for all the alumni on the east coast. I love this idea, and will be going!

Vikings stadium will be basketball friendly (relatively speaking), but the BTT will be played in an arena.

With the upcoming $100 million Target Center renovations and the existing Xcel Energy Center, I'd say either would be a great place to host the event.

Problem is, the BTT occurs around state basketball and state hockey time, Big Ten and NCHC hockey time, etc. They'd have to do some juggling to get it into either joint.

Thanks, and I think those are sticking points with the BBall tournaments and hockey tournaments.

Has the Excel ever had BBall in it?

I believe the last few years the BTT has been the same time as the college hockey tournaments. The Big Ten and WCHA have a contract with The X for at least the next 3 years and I believe the NCHC has a contract with Target Center that runs for 4 more years but the NCHC could opt out after next year. Definitely seems like it would be hard to find the availability and as much as I would like to see it come to Minnesota I just don't see it happening.

Actually, the hockey tourneys are always a week after the Big Ten men's basketball.

The Xcel Energy Center has a contract with the Big Ten to ROTATE the hockey tourney between St. Paul and Detroit (Joe Louis Arena), through 2017. The X got it in 2014 and will host again in 2016. They do not have it in 2015 and 2017 (Detroit gets those). There currently is no contract beyond 2017.

WCHA Hockey this past year was in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was a week after the BTT and will be ROTATE between there and St. Paul. The X has WCHA in the years it doesn't have the Big Ten (2014/2016).

NCHC is locked in with the Target Center for five years, but NCHC is also after BTT, meaning ALL of the hockey tourneys are a week after BTT week.

The bigger issue appears to be state high school basketball (at least if recent years are any indication) for the Target Center (along with Wolves) and Wild hockey for the X.

I think one way or another, the Twin Cities could find a host venue that works, especially if only once every decade or something like that.

You are right I was thinking about the 1st round games but those are played at campus sites and are the same time as the BTT. The X would not have any tournaments the week the BTT is usually played but with the State Hockey Tournament the weekend before and either B1G or WCHA hockey the weekend after it the Wild may not want to give up their arena for most of 3 straight weeks.

They could just put high school bball in Williams Arena and even Mariucci to make room at Target Center

When will selling the soul for ever more east coast dollars end? Honestly, I'd love to kick out four teams right now.

It will never be in MSP, to close of proximity to a BIG school.

I am happy about DC. DC will be better than Chicago as a venue but not better than Indy.

From MSP it costs $200 to drive or fly to Chicago, $400 to fly to Indy, $240 to drive to Indy. Flights to DC are around $300. Travel costs are not that much higher, especially when factoring the increase as a percentage of the total trip cost (<10%). It seems like an odd move, but the impact on cost is insignificant from MSP.
