To be fair, I think a big part of Kill's argument has to do with injuries. If a team has lost several players due to injury during the season, they can't go out and add players like a pro team. So, as I understand it, Kill is saying that it would help teams out with personnel issues if a redshirt was allowed to play in a bowl game. Yes, it could be used to try and gain a competitive advantage, but if you lose a key starter to an injury, and you have a redshirt who is good enough to contribute, let them play in the bowl - that's what Kill is saying.
And let's face it - the only upperclassmen who would lose playing time are ones who have not been productive. it's not like they're going to bench a productive starter and replace them with a redshirt, or play every single redshirt at the expense of the seniors. In the Gophers' case, numerous people on this board have been critical of the WR play this season. I would certainly be intrigued to see what Gentry could do out there. And it would be like a reward to the redshirts who have worked hard during the season if they had the chance to make an appearance during the bowl game.
