Redshirts

To be fair, I think a big part of Kill's argument has to do with injuries. If a team has lost several players due to injury during the season, they can't go out and add players like a pro team. So, as I understand it, Kill is saying that it would help teams out with personnel issues if a redshirt was allowed to play in a bowl game. Yes, it could be used to try and gain a competitive advantage, but if you lose a key starter to an injury, and you have a redshirt who is good enough to contribute, let them play in the bowl - that's what Kill is saying.

And let's face it - the only upperclassmen who would lose playing time are ones who have not been productive. it's not like they're going to bench a productive starter and replace them with a redshirt, or play every single redshirt at the expense of the seniors. In the Gophers' case, numerous people on this board have been critical of the WR play this season. I would certainly be intrigued to see what Gentry could do out there. And it would be like a reward to the redshirts who have worked hard during the season if they had the chance to make an appearance during the bowl game.

Imagine if the rules were changed and JK followed through with his comment that three redshirts would start.
The whole team would be pissed, not just the three guys replaced. Plus, you'd likely have 5 or 10 more get playing time, again at the expense of those who got you to the January 1 bowl game.

I understand wanting to win but at what expense? I get competing, but this isn't a fair fight to just waltz out and play in the reward game after not seeing the field at all during the regular season. Sure they helped on the scout team and they went to practice every day but how could someone not be upset if your playing time is lessened by a "ringer".
That's taking for the good of the team too far.

Especially, if you crapped on seniors. And if it is not a senior, depending, you just added to your transfer numbers.
Nice to fantasize about but dumb to actually do. Don't get it.
Are you saying we shouldn't put the best players on the field? Wow! That would be the antithesis of how I would want things done if I was a player.

I don't think RS should be able to play in the bowl game, but as I read this I equated it to giving participation trophies to everyone to make sure no one's feelings are hurt.

I think it's less about that and more about how good it would be for the frosh to get some PT under their belt as they head in to the next year. One thing I have always wanted to see is for guys to be able to play a bit and still keep their RS. CBB has preseason games where coaches can play guys and then still RS them. If you play less than 35 or 30% of the season before getting hurt you can apply for a medical RS. I'd love to medical RS for guys that get hurt early on ala Poock and Gentry. If they could've come back for the last 3 games of the year it could've helped the team. I'd also love it if guys could play 1-2 games and keep their RS. Guys like Moore wouldn't lose a whole year of eligibility due to having to fill in because of injury

Is Coach Kill serious when he makes these comments, or is this just his 'folksy' way of drumming up some excitement for the future?

A little of both, but I think he is excited for the future. He's also said he expects the defense to be better next year.

Agree, RS should not be allowed to play in a bowl. What about those teams who don't make it to a bowl game? IMO, they would be at a disadvantage.

I don't understand why CFB doesn't allow a "spring scrimmage" against a regional team like CBB did. ISU would be a good one.

If it was all about putting the best players on the field, why would you redshirt those guys to begin with? The point is the team that played from game 1 is the team that earned the bowl game.

Those teams are already at a disadvantage. They don't get the extra game and extra 15 practices.

I agree with those that think a spring scrimmage against another team would be great. The bad thing though is less guys get to play.
