because of one significant difference...

Kill and his staff will successfully sell BT-ready recruits the same attractive and competitive story Brewster did:

A nationally recognized, major public university with fine educational opportunities;

Large, growing metro area with many opportunities for career development post-graduation;

In the area, just off-campus, many attractive sports and entertainment venues all year;

A new on-campus stadium and updated facilities demonstrating the U's serious investment in the only D1 fb program in the state and the importance of a rebuilding a winning tradition;

National game-day TV coverage via BTN/ESPN/ABC ensuring that athletes can showcase their skills on a very big stage;

Plus, Kill & Co can sell what Brewster couldn't: a demonstrated record of winning at every level of coaching and a stable staff capable of producing winning results on a consistent basis.

Seems like a recipe for an improvement in BT-tier recruiting. Kill can sell the sizzle and the steak.

He didn't recruit very well at NIU so I doubt he will be better than Brew.
I should change this to: He was average at NIU so I doubt he will be better than Brew.

He recruited about what you could expect for the MAC. It would be truly amazing to have really good recruiting classes in the MAC. He will certainly be able to coach a lot better than Brewster, he already knows what systems he wants to run. Win and the recruiting will come.

Seriously!?!?! Recruiting will improve under Kill?!??!? I really really doubt that. His record seems to indicate the exact opposite. If that happens thought, I will be thrilled.....and will eat my hat.

Personally, I think the Gophers recruiting rankings will probably not improve under Kill (at least initaially), but that he will squeeze a lot better results out of those recruits. Then, with sustained success, we should see recruiting improve.

I certainly hope he gets to work recruiting wise ASAP, because it doesn't look like there are a lot of recuits to pull from NIU.

Not a very impressive list, especially considered the Gophs presently have 14 recruits graded 74 or better. I know, I know...he should be able to recuit better and higher ranked athletes to a B10 school, but it doesn't look like we should expect his first class to be too "tremendous."

I should also note that I am not against this hire, from what I have read he is a very good football coach and is excellent at recruiting players that will fit his system(s).

Please tell me how in the hel.l did you expect someone coaching in the MAC to have amazing recruiting rankings? Honestly I would love to hear this one.

Not certain about the first part there (time will tell, I guess), but I wholeheartedly believe the second part.

He improved NIU's recruiting from 13th out of 13 teams in the MAC up to 4th in his two recruiting classes there. So that shows he's able to do at least some decent recruiting work. Whether that translates here obviously remains to be seen. But really, we had like the 53rd ranked class last year. I think Kill will be able to produce that, if not better, depending on how quickly this thing comes together next season (win some games).

He will recruit better only if the team starts to win 8-9 games per season. Until then, he won't.

You've apparently never been to DeKalb.

Rodent is correct. This is the MAC not the Big Ten.

From 2004 to 2010, MAC schools recruited a grand total of 7 Rivals 4* and not one 5*. OSU does that easily in one year. Plus in 04-07 the MAC had zero 4*'s so the 7 #4's came the past three years.. In 2004 MAC schools signed a total of just 4 Rivals 3*'s.

Recruiting has improved a lot in the MAC the past two seasons.

As for Coach Kill, he inherited three bottom MAC classes and brought in a #4 ranked MAC class in 2010.

I think he'll be just fine. His 2010 class was better than a couple of Mason's.

Kill can make a good impression and waylay some fears by bringing in some decent recruits right off the bat.

I'll be interested in who he goes after to fill out this 2011 class. In state players would probably be the route to go. Ernie Heifort et will be crucial players for Kill to get and coach up.

"demonstrating the U's serious investment in the only D1 fb program in the state and the importance of a rebuilding a winning tradition"

Sorry, but they demonstrated this by hiring a no name coach after publicly stating their goal was to hire a big name. I have no idea how many said no before Kill said yes, but everyone has a price. If they were really serious about getting a good coach with a name, they should have shelled out more cash to attract the name.

I really hope we gave this guy a lowball 5 year contract with a low buyout in case he needs to be canned in 3 years. I'd hate for our next coaching search to be hampered by the last coach again.

Per Rivals, 2002 and 2004 were both worse than Kill's 2010. 2006 was close.

I presume you're looking at by star rating. This has been studied a little before on these boards, and there has been inflation in the number of 3 star prospects that are in Rivals database. I think most of Mason's classes were in that low 50s, to 60s range. Kill's 2010 class was probably ranked in the 90s on Rivals (can't see actual rating since you can only see top 50 on RIvals).

Looking at Scout though, Mason's 2002 class was ranked 67th, and 2004 was ranked 58th, 2006 was ranked 62nd. Kill's 2010 class was ranked in the 103rd. There's really no comparison. Needless to say though, I think Kill can recruit at least at that level.

Here is where Coach Kill's recruit rankings compare to his MAC counterparts for the 2011 season. Keep in mind that this is the year that his team is 8-0 in the conference. It does not appear that he capitalized on that success. I think it is possible for Kill to improve his recruiting at MN, but there is no historical evidence that this is his strong suit. I hope he proves me wrong and is very successful recruiting at MN.

PAss the KoOl Aid please.

Holtz and Kill are the only Gopher coaches hired since Warmath was fired who have had a winning record in D-I. The others have all had losing D-I records, no D-I experience, or no head coaching experience at all.

Brewster's classes were getting worse every year, so the idea that Kill could improve recruiting is not as outlandish and it might sound.

Like the positive spin on his recruiting abilities. We are all hoping for the best.

How can you use this year's rankings when the recruiting process is not even close to being over? Do you really think N. Illinois is going to sign just 5 players in 2011?

Schools from the MAC get a lot of commitments later because of players who are waiting to see if they get offers from bigger programs. They kinda get the leftovers most of the time.

Nobody recruits better than the guy named Winning.

Coach Kill knows that guy.

I was comparing his recruiting to other MAC schools when I made the comment. That said most MAC schools are very close in AVG stars and overall rankings. I know it is impossible for MAC school to out recruit a Big Ten school. I think there is little evidence to say whether or not recruiting will improve over Brewster. Remember Brewster was known for his recruiting so I doubt things will improve.
