Really that bad?

We did miss two field goals and take a knee on the three yard line with a first down.

Kilgore was one of the most sought after JUCO qb's, he's not junk.

We did plan and prepare for a different skill set.

Weber was fine, in fact without him we lose as he made some nice passes on 3rd downs to sustain drives that ultimately led to the V.

MTSU is more worried about Troy becuase it's a conference game and is a more meaningful game.

Nobody has claimed we will dominate in the B10, only that we'll be competitive. Today was confirmation for an not evidence against that.

This is a good post.

It seems like people have 2 complaints about the performance in this game.
1) Weber's play--Weber definitely started a little tight, but he also had WRs drop balls early (which shouldn't happen. and Hayo should never have the ball thrown to him, ever.) But as Schnoodler noted he made some clutch passes on 3rd down that sparked the team to victory. his final stat line was 10-17 after a bunch of early incompletions. He didn't play terribly, and he will play better.

2) The pass D. The young Defense got torched in the second quarter. But they locked it down in the 2nd half and were great on 3rd down. Most of the broken coverages resulted from the Safeties being out of position, or the LBs taking poor drops. The Safety problem doesn't concern me, as Theret and Royston should hopefully be back next week. The drops will improve with experience.

So, we win time of possession 45 minutes to 15 minutes, but we win the game by 7 points and that is acceptable? It is nice we won but we outweighed them by 60 pounds a guy. Their team is Dasher, he did not play. A guy who has never played shredded us in the first half. Weber made horrible decisions. Yes, we made some adjustments and won the game. The game MTU is most worried about is Troy. That doesn't suggest anything to you?

What happens when we play a quality opponent? We have to be dramatically better versus USC or anybody else in the Big Ten. We will not have the overwhelming size and ability advantage beyond South Dakota that we possessed tonight.

Wow, these "fans" who are miserable after a Gopher win are true masochists. I consider myself a long suffering Gopher fan getting through so many tough losses over the decades. But, man would I be miserable if I couldn't even enjoy the victories we get. Unreal.

It's enough that some people spent the whole offseason mourning losses that hadn't even happened yet. But to be miserable after a win, let alone a road win against a decent opponent, if you can't be happy then, when can you be happy? I think Kansas and Ole Miss would love to change places with us now.

Every year there are fans who bitch about the way their team won the Super Bowl. Some people are like that.

Things I've learned from Gopher Hole:

1. The majority of posters know much more than the coaches.
2. All results are attributable to 'adjustments'.
3. Win or lose, never be happy.

strategically and tactically we did it perfect. Long sustained drives keep their quick strike offense off the field. the fact that we had three scoring drives end up not scoring is concerning a bit, (two fg attempts really, the knee at the end is not concerning at all) but I was very impressed with the strategy and execution. I loved the defensive adjustments at half. This team had the opportunity to be a very special team.... I'm looking forward to the ride!

The past few years we played teams similar to MTS, or even worse teams and never moved the ball like we did in this one. We have said the last 2 years we wanted to run the ball, pound the rock, and didn't do it. This game we did. I'm sure if Brewster and the coaches could have run the ball every play and won, they would have, just to to make a point with their team that they have a successful running offense. However , we will not have as much success running in the big ten as this game, so fixing the passing game to be more productive (mostly pass blocking) is important. Also the defense gave up 300 yards in only 15 minutes of work. Again a bit of a concern. Lastly the game plan was to shorten the game to keep the young, inexperienced defense fresh since the heat was terrible.

If the gophers are as good as we all hope, they not only run over SD next week, they throw successfully and put up 40+ points.

60's guy and cnmin

Are you guys singing a different tune if we don't kneel the ball down to run out the clock with a 1st down at the MTSU 4 yard line with OVER a 1:15 left in the game?

Not sure how many wins this team will get, but I think this team will have more nailbiters than blowouts. While it would take everything going right for them, I do think this team might be able to surprise one of the bigs. So, if we're going to go .500 again, I sure do hope that one of the wins is against USC, WIS, PSU, OSU or Iowa. With this young defense, new OC - again, and Weber at QB, that would be a huge improvement.

So let's get this all straight:

So in Brewster's 4th year, with a 5th-year very experienced senior at QB, we're giddy with 7-point wins over Sun Belt opponents who are using their backup QB, while we hold the ball for 45 minutes AND have zero turnovers? Moreover, in Brewster's 4th year with a 5th-year very experienced senior at QB, AND a brand new gorgeous outdoor stadium, we will be giddy with one whole win against the likes of USC, WIS, PSU, OSU, and Iowa? Shouldn't we be expecting that by now? Shouldn't we be blowing the likes of a Sun Belt team out of the stadium? If we were wearing black and gold and smelled like pig $--- or wore red and white and wore stupid yellow foam hats on our head, would we still be satisfied with barely beating a Sun Belt team?

What if we had turned the ball over, or if they had one linebacker who weighed over 220 lbs? Do you still think we'd have won? We couldn't pass against a mediocre defense playing 8 and 9 men in the box, WITH a running game that was going strong and a pretty good kick return game to boot. With MOST of the intangibles going our way (except for the FG kicking game), we had to rely on a defensive stand with a couple of minutes left to beat that team. Mega YUCK.
