Forty years after the first Carroll served as a standout on the Minnesota offense, the Golden Gophers have another standout in right tackle Quinn Carroll.
After three seasons at Notre Dame that were hampered by a torn ACL in 2019, Carroll returned home to Minnesota where he was originally the No. 1 ranked high school football prospect in the state according to Rivals, and where his father Jay played for four years from 1980-1983. Attending the Brute OLine Development Camp this week, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound lineman looked polished and refined in every drill put before him, while also sporting impressive balance in his lower half and an outgoing attitude that was appreciated by both coaches and fellow players.
Carroll’s well-crafted technique and coordination were on display early on during a kick-step drill that was challenging for most if not everyone there. Once the Minnesota tackle took the turf for his turn, former NFL offensive lineman Alex Boone got everyone’s attention and let them know that, “Quinn will show us how to get this done.”
Carroll immediately proceeded to bang out a flawless rep during the drill, kick-stepping until he was nearly off the turf, earning loud cheers from every coach and peer in attendance, and causing Boone to joke that he would kick-step forever if they never made him stop.
The Edina, Minnesota, native quickly became a resource for other linemen working with him in the drills, such as Illinois guard Isaiah Adams. The two Big Ten bruisers were seen talking about the proper form and shin angles to take during more balance-focused drills, and every lineman on the field noticeably improved as the day progressed.
A graduate student at Minnesota with four years of collegiate experience and 25 total starts, Carroll profiles as an on-field leader and showed it today at the Brute OLine Development Camp. After paving the way for the Gophers to finish in the top 20 nationally in rushing yards per game and for running back Mohamed Ibrahim to finish with more than 1,600 yards on the season, Carroll enters the 2023 college football season and the 2024 NFL Draft cycle as an exciting option at right tackle.
