Per Daniel:

Forty years after the first Carroll served as a standout on the Minnesota offense, the Golden Gophers have another standout in right tackle Quinn Carroll.

After three seasons at Notre Dame that were hampered by a torn ACL in 2019, Carroll returned home to Minnesota where he was originally the No. 1 ranked high school football prospect in the state according to Rivals, and where his father Jay played for four years from 1980-1983. Attending the Brute OLine Development Camp this week, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound lineman looked polished and refined in every drill put before him, while also sporting impressive balance in his lower half and an outgoing attitude that was appreciated by both coaches and fellow players.

Carroll’s well-crafted technique and coordination were on display early on during a kick-step drill that was challenging for most if not everyone there. Once the Minnesota tackle took the turf for his turn, former NFL offensive lineman Alex Boone got everyone’s attention and let them know that, “Quinn will show us how to get this done.”

Carroll immediately proceeded to bang out a flawless rep during the drill, kick-stepping until he was nearly off the turf, earning loud cheers from every coach and peer in attendance, and causing Boone to joke that he would kick-step forever if they never made him stop.

The Edina, Minnesota, native quickly became a resource for other linemen working with him in the drills, such as Illinois guard Isaiah Adams. The two Big Ten bruisers were seen talking about the proper form and shin angles to take during more balance-focused drills, and every lineman on the field noticeably improved as the day progressed.

A graduate student at Minnesota with four years of collegiate experience and 25 total starts, Carroll profiles as an on-field leader and showed it today at the Brute OLine Development Camp. After paving the way for the Gophers to finish in the top 20 nationally in rushing yards per game and for running back Mohamed Ibrahim to finish with more than 1,600 yards on the season, Carroll enters the 2023 college football season and the 2024 NFL Draft cycle as an exciting option at right tackle.

Go Gophers!!

Alex Boone has O Line passion. Curious to know the real story about Zimmer and Boone not getting along.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for posting.

I wish the author would have given some info about what the camp exactly is and which players are invited and why.

A story should answer the 5 Ws & H - that’s the proper mode of communication when discussing an esoteric topic.

It's been widely reported that he's moving to guard.
I believe the kick-step is a Tackle technique. Wouldn't make much sense to practice and perfect that if moving to Guard.

Not saying I don't want him to move there or that he won't make the move. Just observing from the article.

But if Boe, Shaw, and Cooper can hold down the interior, then I'd love to see Carroll back at RT for another year.

Only "bummer" about that is another season where Guedet and Lewis don't get a chance to play much. But solid backups that will be ready if anything unfortunate happens.

I'm genuinely curious as well because they seem like a match made in heaven.
Boone even joined a podcast last year to talk about the players dislike for Zimmer.

Essentially, he said that Mike Zimmer doesn't really fit as a head coach anymore. He is too old school, would question people's injury status, he was essentially a "rub some dirt on it" / fear based person. That works as an assistant coach but not a head coach anymore.

It's the same stuff others said after Zim got fired.

Yes it usually is. Could be that his best shot at the next level is at OT but the Gophers will ask him to play OG for one season. I believe he was playing OG much of spring ball.

Nice free advertising for Boone's private business that has nothing to do with the Gophers or Vikings, as well.

Are Gophers allowed to pay for private training in the off-season, like this? Maybe it was comp'ed, or maybe he paid it out of pocket. From Edina, family probably has some money to help as well.

Why wouldn’t they be allowed to pay for training?

Does Jay Carroll have more younger sons or progenies that can put on an OL helmet? We sure can use more Quinn Carrolls.

This story has everything to do with Minnesota Gopher sports.

He's from Hopkins, not Edina. His neighborhood is in the Edina school district.

Not every family in Edina is wealthy.

You appear to be willfully obtuse.

No one said it wasn't. The story very much is.

Just adding on that Boone's private business, which I correctly note has nothing to do with the Gophers or Vikings (his business), got a nice bit of free advertising with the story.

His neighborhood is in the Edina school district.
Lucky him

Not every family in Edina is wealthy.
I'm sure there are a few

Improper benefits? Just asking the question

Doesn't seem commonplace?

I was referring to the player paying. Or it’s free and they just invite guys. Plenty of those types of camps.

The gophers didn’t pay for him to attend. Why would that be a conclusion you jumped to?

You seem upset about Quinn Carroll.

Sure, would make sense

I didn't say they did.

"Like this" was referring to camps like those, not referring to Gophers paying for it. I have no idea if they did, wasn't referring to that.

Huh?

Paying for camps, in the NIL era, shouldn't be a problem. We have had quarterbacks attend various camps why not an offensive lineman.

As long as it's above board per NCAA rules, I doubt anyone has a problem with it. (y)
