Q&A: Nate Mason Discusses Gophers Commitment, Coach Pitino, Josh Martin and More

Nate Mason, a 5-11 point guard who played for the CP3 All Stars AAU program, has become the second player to commit to new head coach Richard Pitino and the Minnesota Golden Gopher program. Gopher Hole caught up with Mason to learn the latest on his decision.

Mason led CP3 to a 20-5 mark in the tough EYBL and averaged 12.7 points per game. They finished runner-up in the talented Peach Jam.

Gopher Hole: What was the main reason that you decided to commit to Minnesota yesterday?

Nate Mason: I just felt comfortable with the coaches. I felt that it was the best choice for me.

Gopher Hole: You visited Minnesota recently. How was the visit?

Nate Mason: The visit was good. I got to the practice, a scrimmage and everything else. I didn't get to see a football game, but I did see a scrimmage and practice.

Gopher Hole: You were up in Minnesota in May for the EYBL. Did you get a chance to see much when you were here or were you just so busy playing basketball?

Nate Mason: We were just playing basketball. We didn't do anything besides the Mall of America.

Gopher Hole: Coach Pitino is entering his first year at Minnesota and wants to have an up-tempo team that relies on strong guard play. Is that something that you feel is a great fit for you?

Nate Mason: Yes. I feel that is the best fit for me. That is why I committed.

Gopher Hole: Do you know the other Gopher commit Josh Martin? He also played on the EYBL circuit.

Nate Mason: No, I don't. I didn't know that he played EYBL.

Gopher Hole: Have you ever talked to him at all?

Nate Mason: I have been talking to him since yesterday.

Gopher Hole: Have you ever seen him play?

Nate Mason: No, but I watched some of his highlights, though.

Gopher Hole: Does he seem like the kind of big man you like to play with?

Nate Mason: Yes.

Gopher Hole: Montrose Christian has a reputation as one of the top prep schools in the country. They not only play a great schedules, but you are always going to practice against good players that are going to play college basketball. How much do you think is going to help you improve as a player?

Nate Mason: Tremendously. It will help me improve tremendously.

Gopher Hole: What are the expectations for your team?

Nate Mason: We are trying to get a national championship. That is what we want.

Gopher Hole: When is your first game?

Nate Mason: I don't really know because I am not officially enrolled in the school yet.

Gopher Hole: When will you be enrolling?

Nate Mason: I will probably enroll Monday.

Gopher Hole: Where have you been so far?

Nate Mason: I am in Georgia right now.

Gopher Hole: What was the main reason you decided to switch schools?

Nate Mason: Better competition, really, to prepare me for college.

Gopher Hole: What do you see as your strengths as a point guard?

Nate Mason: Scorer. Leader. Defender and just a winner.

Gopher Hole: What things are you working on, like any player, to continue to improve to be ready to play at that next level?

Nate Mason: Creating shots in traffic. Defending. Getting stronger. Quicker. More explosive, really.

Gopher Hole: You were down to Minnesota, Virginia, Kansas State and Memphis when you committed. How hard was to say no to those schools?

Nate Mason: It was very hard. It was very hard, but I weighed out my options and Minnesota was the best fit for me.

Gopher Hole: Will you try and get up to a basketball game this year?

Nate Mason: Yes, maybe so. Probably so. I'll try to catch a game.

Gopher Hole: Minnesota had Reid Travis visiting this weekend. You played against him and Howard Pulley at the Peach Jam. You beat them 90-73 as you had 19 points and six assists. Travis was eight of 11 from the field and had 18 points. Do you remember him at all?

Nate Mason: Yes

Gopher Hole: What were your impressions of him if he were to join Minnesota and commit also?

Nate Mason: We need him. We need him bad. You might as well come and join the Gophers.

I like that!

Just hope the school situation(s) don't cause any issues getting eligible!

Nice addition for Minnesota. I actually like Mason more than some of the other guards they had been involved with but who committed elsewhere.

Which ones?

Ryan James feels Mason is underrated & is a better player than his ranking suggests. He's seen him play several times & really likes his game. That's all I need to know.

Ryan James feels Mason is underrated & is a better player than his ranking suggests. He's seen him play several times & really likes his game. That's all I need to know.

He's got a smoothness to his game that reminds me of a couple underrated local guys from recent years - Ben Woodside and Nate Wolters. He also seems to have the same type of effortless shooting stroke as those guys.

Nate has tremendous potential. I suspect he will need to muscle up by adding about 20 pounds to handle B1G contact.

Nate Mason (12-8-13)" It is arguably the biggest game of the year on the First Coast. " ... " Providence ultimately prevailed by a score of 93-74."...

Game Night: Providence vs Arlington Country Day
"
For ACD, Brandone Francis led the way with 17 points. Both Turner and Mason had 16 points, Buford had 10, Miller had 8, Maura had six and Chester finished with 1.

High School Boys Basketball: 5 to watch (Flordia Times Union) Nov 17...

"Arlington Country Day: Another year, another stacked Apaches team. ACD is powered by four early college signees — PF Dante Buford (Oklahoma), G Brandone Francis (Florida), G K.J. Maura (Abilene Christian) and F Nate Mason (Minnesota). Freshman F D.J. Russell (Miami) is also on the floor. ACD’s schedule is beefed up, too, with its annual game against Providence (Dec. 7 at UNF) touching off a huge slate of games. Sunrise Christian (Kan.) on Jan. 25 will be on ESPN, followed by a big one against Oak Hill (Va.) on Jan. 29."

Rivals Arlington Providence break down 12-8-13

"* Mason Jr. is a crafty point guard capable of breaking his man down off the dribble and getting into the lane.

So- from the box scores it looks like Mason is averaging 14.5 per game. Scoring per game doesn't mean much with super schools like this- 4 D1 players starting and only one basketball to share.

Turner looks like hes pretty damn good. Why arent we in on this guy? Seems like Mason and him are friends.

Nate has been putting up some pretty unimpressive numbers in HS. Is it the system he is in?
All I know is that he's transferred a ton to different schools. That could be a reason. Also Lamonte Turner is a 4 star in 2015 I beleive

Nate has been putting up some pretty unimpressive numbers in HS. Is it the system he is in?

Plays with some top players plus they won by 33

Turner had only 12 pts (6-1, 175 | Class of 2016)
"
2016 Arlington Country Day (FL) guard Lamonte Turner - Since making the move to Arlington Country Day from Alabama, and reclassifying from the class of 2015 to 2016, things have been on the upswing for Turner. Still not a true point guard, he should be ready to take over at the lead spot. His first game was an adjustment, but his second game Turner showed off his scoring ability as he got to the basket repeatedly. His handle is improving, as are his instincts and his strength. Since making the big move, Turner has picked up new offers from Florida, Murray State, Oklahoma and South Carolina. Once he gets bigger and becomes a true point guard, more could come in.
"
Dante Buford only had 3 pts...
"
2014 Arlington Country Day (FL) forward Dante Buford - At first, the four-star prospect wasn't even supposed to be in attendance due to an official visit. However, plans changed and it worked out for ACD as they had a full squad and went undefeated during the weekend in part because of Buford. As he is being recruited to play the small forward position in college, he still has a lot to improve on. His explosiveness, power, strength and ability to attack the rim are there. His handle has improved, as well as his decision making and shot making ability. Still, he hasn't made the full transition to becoming a full-time perimeter player just yet. If and when he does, his elite size, strength and athleticism will put him in position to succeed. Down to three schools, the next few weekends will be pivotal in Buford's decision as he looks for a comfortable option following the visits. He heads to Miami next weekend, South Carolina the following weekend and Oklahoma the first weekend in November. He can be an impact player for all three schools.
