Q&A: De La Salle's Sacar Anim: "I love the Barn. Great atmosphere."

My basic thoughts are that if you're under 6'5" you need be 2 of the following 3 things: great athlete, good shooter, good ball handler with ability to play point. When you're only 1 of those you're going to be a fringe prospect unless you're great at one of them. It's hard to be a guard if you're not a reliable ball handler and not a shooter that needs to be respected. He could develop into a solid player but it will take time

Sacar is long. Wouldn't be surprised if he come in as a 6'-5"+ freshman. Very good athlete, slasher, ball handler, passer and can defend.

What 3P% do you think he has to shoot to be respectable?

I like Anim, but we already have two defense first wings in McNeil and Morris. We need another wing besides Lofton who can shoot the three. If we can add a three level scorer, I can see Anim as the second wing in the class.

I was under the impression that squirrel has some offensive game, please correct me if I'm wrong. & from what I've seen McNeil is getting better too. The staff prides itself on player development.

Hoop Dreams, Zach shot much better during his high school, Pulley, & JuCO days. Last season was the outlier. So in comparison I don't consider Lofton Dan 2.0, but I'd say he is a much better shooter than Sacar.

Hopefully Anim can adapt his shot or find success with the unorthodox form. Either way I still like the kids athleticism, defense, and hustle he is always around the ball he doesn't take any plays off and I think Pitino and co. Can develop him nicely, he could be fun to watch in transition.

I agree that Sacar may provide similar abilities to McNeil and Morris, so the Gophers should target better shooters as their top priorities in this class. Sacar doesn't have any high major offers yet, so it's not like the Gophers can't afford to wait a little while since it's probably unlikely he commits to any of his mid-major offers anytime soon. I'm guessing he'll wait to see what his options are in the same manner that the Gophers will wait to see what kind of confidence level they have with their top targets before offering.

Looking at Morris numbers and what I have heard of them they may be a lot of similarities. 30% three point shooter, looks like he can go 6-6 or 0-6 on any given night. Morris will be a Sr. when Sacar is a freshman, could be a good option.

He may not be top priority, but it helps us get Alex & Jarvis I'm all for it.

If that's the case, I'm all for it too! Would love to have all three of those guys!! I'm sure it would be tough for Pitino to actually gauge how much of an impact something like that would have on the other two players' decisions though. I doubt Alex and Jarvis would come right out and say that to our staff, but who knows.

What 3P% do you think he has to shoot to be respectable?

32% is respectable enough that teams can't just leave you wide open. Thing is Sacar reminds me a bit of Joe Coleman. Coleman was a good athlete (although he wasn't as long or fluid as Anim) but he couldn't get his own shot. He scored off of put backs, rim cuts, etc. Basically a guard that scored like a center in that his baskets were usually assisted, but he wasn't great for spacing because he wasn't an outside threat and also didn't help with ball handling at all. He made up for it by being tough and a good rebounder but you can't have multiple guards on the floor with those limitations. If Anim develops into a reliable ball handler who can help start the offense or put the ball on the floor and attack then he can overcome poor shooting. If he can't that weakness becomes more glaring.

Well before EYBL Session 4, Sacar was shooting at a 31% rate from three. Not saying he's a great shooter, but he has room to improve and become at least a threat by college.
.....Sacar has been the best offensive and defensive player for Howard Pulley this season, and it only makes sense to eventually offer Pulley's top performer, especially when he happens to be a long-time teammate and friend of Jarvis Johnson.

This was pretty fun to see from Sacar and it happened right when the Baltimore team closes the lead to single digits and Pulley looked lost, Jarvis was banged up and nobody else seemed to be ready to step up. But then Pulley stretched the lead back out and won by more than 20.

You would like to see Anim play like the reigning Big Ten PotY? How is this even worth posting?
Actually if you had could got some reading/comp help you would know that nowhere in my post did I state that I expected Anim to play like Nik. More like try to observe/emulate his shooting form in effort to improve his shot.

Huh?

you are wasting your breath because as The Brain Trust I deal with truth, honesty, facts and merit, Not with quotas, double standards, excuse making and falsehoods.

Actually if you had could got some reading/comp

Again, well said.

In all seriousness, Sacar is a nice player and maybe he could do well in the Big Ten, but I have trouble getting on board with guards who aren't good shooters unless they are exceptional in other areas.

guards who aren't good shooters

Austin shot 26% as a freshman, Coleman 25%. Squril is a 30% guy. Lofton shot 29% last year.

Sacar is not a terrible shooter, people are hung-up with his form, get over it.

His form isn't the reason I'm hesitant about offering him right now. I'm sure if he signed with us he would be a solid player, I just think we might be able to get someone at his position who is even better. If we are, then it doesn't make sense to offer him. I would much rather get Chris Clarke and/or KJ Walton. If we miss out on both of those guys then my opinion might change (or if we miss on one and Pitino wants two wings).

The Brain Drain is showing he isn't as smart as he thinks he is once again.

And if you had could done had good got some reading comprehension skills of your own, you would know that nowhere in my post did I accuse you of expecting anything.

I love you, brain guy.

This is my impression, very much like Coleman, it depends on the makeup of the team, I don't see having Jarvis and Sacar in the same class, two guards with marginal outside shooting ability isn't a good mix.

per @PulleyHoops:

Congratulations Alex Illikainen, Jarvis Johnson and Sacar Anim who have been invited to participate in the Victor Oladipo & Ty Lawson All American Camp presented by The Elite Skills Basketball School - ESBS. This is one of NIKE's premier basketball events for elite high school basketball players. The 2014 Victor Oladipo & Ty Lawson All American Camp will be conducted on the illustrious campus of Dematha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, MD from July 9-11, 2014. This event is limited to 60 of the nation's elite high school players, by invitation only.

Two slashers that can constantly attacking the rim and getting the other team frustrated and in foul trouble... I'll take it. Would expect them both to get their 3P% to respectable percentages after some time with staff.

So, umm, Anim locked down Jimmy Whitt today and added in some nice scoring in front of Pitino. What more is coaching staff looking for?

+1 I think Pitino should have offered months ago. He fits the system well, soon it will be too late.
