Frank Ragnow, a 6-foot-6, 283-pound junior lineman from Chanhassen, has a scholarship offer from Minnesota and has continued to pick up offers from several top programs. Gopher Hole caught up with Ragnow to learn the latest on his recruitment.
Gopher Hole: What is the latest on your recruitment right now?
Frank Ragnow: Just recently, I got an offer from Vanderbilt and just a lot more schools showing more interest. Cal Berkeley is coming next Monday and they have told me that as long as I look like what they think I should look like, that I will have an offer from them, too.
Gopher Hole: How many offers are you up to right now? I think that you have seven, does that sound right?
Frank Ragnow: Yes, I have seven.
Gopher Hole: So, Florida State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Pitt, South Florida and Vanderbilt. Does that sounds right?
Frank Ragnow: Yes, sir.
Gopher Hole: You obviously have to feel very proud for getting that many looks so early in your recruitment?
Frank Ragnow: Oh, yes. It is a very humbling feeling.
Gopher Hole: If I had told you three or four months ago that you would have seven offers from seven very good schools, what would you have thought?
Frank Ragnow: I would have laughed.
Gopher Hole: What do you attribute most of the interest to? Have you been sending out tapes? How are so many schools hearing about you?
Frank Ragnow: I really don’t know. I haven’t been sending out anything. I haven’t really been doing anything. A lot of them have said that they have seen my highlight tape and were really impressed.
Gopher Hole: You were at the Gopher spring game the other week. What were your impressions on the spring game?
Frank Ragnow: The team looked really good on both sides of the field. I was really impressed with the tight ends, too, especially Maxx Williams. He looked like he is going to be a good player. The quarterbacks looked really good. A lot of fans were there. More than I expected.
Gopher Hole: Have you had a chance to go to any other campuses for spring games or practices?
Frank Ragnow: I went to Iowa State’s Junior Day. I went to Northwestern Saturday. I went to Nebraska’s Spring Game.
Gopher Hole: Have you even thought about when you are going to try to decide on a school yet or haven’t you thought that far?
Frank Ragnow: I really haven’t gotten that far yet.
Gopher Hole: Are you planning on going to some college football camps in June or have you thought that far ahead yet?
Frank Ragnow: I think that I might camp at a couple schools. I think, one for sure, will be Ohio State. They really want me to come to camp.
Gopher Hole: It seems like Minnesota has always been a school that you have been high on. What would it mean to play for the Gophers?
Frank Ragnow: It would be awesome. Stay home with my family and it looks like they are going in the right direction, so it would mean a lot to play for the hometown Gophers.
Gopher Hole: Have you even thought about committing at one time to Minnesota or are you just going to weigh your options out?
Frank Ragnow: I am just going to weigh my options out. I haven’t really gotten that far yet.
Gopher Hole: How is the track season going so far?
Frank Ragnow: It is going good. It is going really good.
Gopher Hole: I know that the weather hasn’t really cooperated much. Have you had a chance to throw outside much?
Frank Ragnow: Yes. Just this past week, we have gone outside a couple of times. Otherwise, it was inside the whole time.
Gopher Hole: What has been your best throw so far this year?
Frank Ragnow: 50 feet and 8 inches (for shot).
Gopher Hole: Has the football team had much of a chance to get together and work out?
Frank Ragnow: Every day after school, we have a ton of people working out in the weight room.
Gopher Hole: What is going to be the main thing that makes you pick School A over School B and C?
Frank Ragnow: I would say that the main factor in my decision will be comfortability and if it set me up to be successful as a person and if our team is going to be successful.
Gopher Hole: Is playing close to home important to you and have your family and friends there or isn’t that a big factor?
Frank Ragnow: Playing close to home would be great, but distance isn’t really a factor for me. The school that I think sets me up to be the most successful academically and athletically.
Gopher Hole: Have you thought much about a college major yet?
Frank Ragnow: I really don’t know.
Gopher Hole: Have you taken the SAT or ACT yet?
Frank Ragnow: Yes, I have. I got a 23 my first time, but I am taking it again in June. I want to get it up.
Gopher Hole: Are there any schools that you would love to hear from that you haven’t heard from yet?
Frank Ragnow: Not really, no.
Gopher Hole: The list of other schools that are recruiting you but haven’t offered you that I read are Cal, Duke, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Does that sound right?
Frank Ragnow: Yes.
