Press Release: Gopher Great Bob Stein to Pursue U of M Athletic Director Post

Isn't Alan Page facing mandatory retirement soon?:cool02:

I'm one of that kind of people.

I worked with Bob Stein at the Timberwolves. I was witness to the lack of vision and lack of leadership he provided. I was at the weekly meetings when 20 year-olds, in their first jobs out of college would snicker as Bob slogged through an overly prepared and under delivered quip. He had no respect from people in the first job of their working career.

He may have been able face the task as a football player, but as a leader, he has a weak chin.

If he is hired, it is a epic failure.

I think we worked together. My highlight was how drunk he got at the "Super Bowl Saturday Night" party in and him hitting on Leslie Visser. I ended up helping her to "I gotta go" and we found her husband, Dick Stockton. Don't think Bobby knew they were married.

That's my name-dropping for this thread. LOL.

Just because we are considering homies doesn't mean that we have been inoculated for the Woody Syndrome.

What is worse than Woody is a homey Woody with poor eyesight.

Should we ask Sid to work on Tony Dungy?

I take Najarian 10 times before Stein.

With the search panel in place, I have to believe Stein has no chance.

I LOVED Win Bob Stein's Money. Great show.

I am happy that a University of Minnesota alumnus, a Golden Gopher consensus "All American", and a Golden Gopher Football M man is throwing his hat in the ring. Beth may be wonderful, but I prefer Bob Stein's credentials. Beth is not even a Gopher. Who and what processes put all these foreigners in charge of our athletic department?

It's because we haven't built a wall around the state.

per Sid:

• I wrote last month that the University of Minnesota should consider hiring Bob Stein as athletic director. Well, the 68-year-old Minneapolis attorney, who formerly was a Gophers and NFL football player and president of the Timberwolves, announced in a news release Friday that he is pursuing the job. “Minnesota has the greatest improvement potential of any Big Ten school and I think I have the experience, credentials and motivation to help make that happen,” Stein said in the release.

Go Gophers!!

Curious question, but how did he run the Timberwolves into the ground?
That was the first and quite often objection to him being the AD here.
So, what did he do to dismantle this franchise that he wasn't apart of
since 1995...

...let's say, anymore than what has happened to the franchise since,
(Owner Glen Taylor, GM David Kahn's drafts/free agents, bad coaching, etc..)

I am not a fan of a grandiose public self promoter before he even gets the job.

We want someone who is a strong visionary who gets people to take them seriously with the focus on the program rather than on them.

"When E.F. Hutton speaks, people listen".

For all I know, he be may become an effective AD. I just don't like his style or delivery from the get go.

Putting all other considerations aside - Stein is 68-years-old. 68!

If any other D1 program in the country hired a 68-year-old AD who had been out of athletics for years, I guarantee there would be numerous people on this board mocking that school.

The trend around the country has been to hire younger AD's, given the demands of the job.

IF the powers-that-be decide Goetz is not the long-term answer, the U needs to be looking for a younger candidate - possibly an assistant AD at a major D1 school, or a current AD at a smaller D1 school who is ready to move up. They also need someone who is media-savvy, and can lead a fund-raising campaign. Now, IF they can find someone who fits that description, and ALSO happens to be a Gopher grad or former player, great. But, being "an M man" cannot and should not be the deciding factor. Competency should be the deciding factor.

Yup...I remember that one. I wasn't at that party but heard that story from some guys. I remember one year when a bunch of us sneaked into the offices (with Leiweke leading the way) and we turned everyone's monitors upside down, moved pictures and kid's art from cubicle to cubicle or from one office to another. Harmless crap like that. Until we arrived the next morning and they were getting ready to call the cops to investigate since they thought someone had broken in.

I want to add that Leslie was very nice to me and very gracious, so was Mr. Stockton. Walter Payton was an absolute peach. He actually followed me around and wanted to talk. That was great. Larry King smelled like BO.

More name-dropping. Now I'm done.

What is with this "Trump - like" fixation with wanting people who claim to be leaders but can't actually run the department? None of these loud mouth talking heads can handle the job without someone like Beth running the day to day activities.

Funny you say that, I was recently discussing Trump with an acquaintance that helped get Donald's mortgage company up and running in NYC in the mid-00s and let's just say his assessment of his competence was not rosy. He's a salesman, not the brains.

A level talent hires A level talent. Bs hire Cs and Ds. We can afford a salesman if he can makes good hires to actually run the place.

Right, that would be the associate AD's.

We need a strong willed "executive"/sales type to re-set the culture over there and get the money flowing in.

It help that his father-in-law was one of the owners. He was a bit better GM than David Kahn. That is a rather low bar however.

Being an AD isn't like being a business leader necessarily. He could be good but it's hard to know.

"led the successful entry of the Minnesota Timberwolves into the NBA and development of Target Center"

Gosh thanks Bob...

Thank goodness. I haven't been able to sleep the past few weeks wondering if Stein would apply.

So a Norwood Teague type? Hopefully they can stay off their phone when they're three sheets to the wind

Stein is head and shoulders above several recent Gopher AD's. Maybe there are better candidates, but he would be a step up from Maturi and Teague, admittedly low bars to get over.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If Teague hadn't been a lech and made inappropriate advances on women most people would still be lauding how good of an AD he was. He was bringing in more money and diverting resources toward revenue sports and got the Athletic Village started. What he did is unacceptable and he was rightfully fired. But to say someone who has zero NCAA athletic department experience is inherently a better AD than someone who significantly improved the athletic situation at the U is laughable.

I duno if he would be getting praise. Fundraising for the whole Athletes Village seemed to stall pretty far short of what they hoped. MEGATOUNGE was in charge during much of that....

Agree with most of that, but do disagree on Teague. Many of us who talked to him, corresponding with him and heard him spin and lie in interviews, thought he was a vain, narcissistic, clown. The classic "Emperor with No Clothes". There was never a chance he'd be successful here. Not sure he even wanted to be.

His oblivious reaction the the North Carolina debacle was a big hint. Then we saw, with the Shaka Smart/Billy Donovan/Pittino fiasco, how ill prepared he was when his original plan failed. Now go back in your mind and think of all the "most wanted" coaches and contributors who didn't come thru and wonder how Norwood would have handled those?

The answer is very badly.

That's what may make your last thought may be very pertinent indeed.

Are their de-fibs in and around the AD's office?

Your acquaintance's opinion of Trump's competence is equal to the success of Trump Mortgage.

So I take it you plan on voting for Ted Cruz? Good to know that you are not going to be voting for Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump. Depending upon who shows up on the Republican ticket and Democratic ticket, you might not vote at all for a US President in November 2016. It seems a near certainty at this point you will not vote Democratic given your age criteria. Or maybe you are just going to write in some appropriately young person?

Yep. Comparable to what Obama did while hiring his advisors and Cabinet. Zero business savvy.

Can we go back to the time when you didn't post for over two years? That'd be great.
