It looks like Stein issued this press release on behalf of himself:

MINNEAPOLIS, April 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Gopher football and academic All-American, Robert A. "Bob" Stein, today announced that he will pursue the University of Minnesota Athletics Director position.

"A combination of donors, legislators, Regents, alumni, faculty, coaches and fellow past Gopher athletes have reached out and encouraged me to seek the AD job. I have listened to their thoughts and concerns and have decided to pursue the position. I will submit my credentials to the search committee appointed by President Kaler," said Stein.

Stein, a Minneapolis attorney, led the successful entry of the Minnesota Timberwolves into the NBA and development of Target Center as CEO/President for both, financing over $200 million at the same time. He starred for the Gophers' last Big Ten Football Champions, then played eight years in the NFL. He earned his law degree, graduating in the top 10% of his class, while playing for the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs. As a sports attorney, he represented NFL, NBA and NHL players for 10 years after his football career.

"I love the University of Minnesota and have been committed to academic and athletic excellence my entire life. I've played on championship teams for great organizations and understand what it takes to compete at that level," said Stein. "A renowned academic and research university like the U of M should consistently compete for Big Ten and National Championships. We don't need to settle for less. We have a great example of a winning tradition and competing at the highest level in our Gopher Women's NCAA Champion Hockey Team. That must be the goal for every sport on campus, and the AD should be a leader and advocate for all sports and all student-athletes," added Stein.

Stein has long ties with the University and its athletics, having been inducted into the Gopher Sports Hall of Fame, serving as president of the letterman's "M" Club and on the National Alumni Association board, and as co-founder of the Gopher football booster organization, the Goal Line Club. As an attorney, Stein has fought for fair payment to NFL players for the unauthorized use of their identities, and for suffering concussions and traumatic brain injury from their NFL years.

"I have a demonstrated record of building a successful sports brand and culture, creating game-day customer experiences that fill seats, creating successful youth and state outreach efforts, raising money and developing top-notch sports executives. And I know Minnesota. My goal is to utilize these skills to support all Gopher student-athletes and teams," said Stein.

"Minnesota has the greatest improvement potential of any Big Ten school and I think I have the experience, credentials and motivation to help make that happen. I am a lifelong Minnesotan, so our State, University and Gopher athletes mean something very special to me," said Stein.

I think Bob Stein would be a fantastic AD. The difference between the T-Wolves and the college world are night and day. He is a football guy. I will go so far as to say that he may be the leading candidate for the job right now. What impresses me is his football background and his J. D. with football contract negotiation skills and his ability to raise money like he did for the T-Wolves. He will know when not to screw up a buyout clause, how to raise money, improve fan experience, and attract fans. In addition, his goal to raise the standing of the programs is attractive. What is not to like about this candidate that we should not appreciate? His past performance in delivering a NBA franchise and arena are no minor accomplishments. His standing as a football player is top notch, and his commitment to the program in the Goal Line Club is nothing but exemplary.

I have no idea what kind of people all the naysayers may be above or what they have done to be equally as qualified as Bob, other than being a Who's Who of bulletin board wise guys.

At 68 years old, is he getting a little long in the tooth to be the AD to lead this program?

I all for him with a Sid clause - Call it quits before 100. :cool02:

Maybe once, but today 68 is the new 58...and you what they say about 58 now. In fact, if you think about it too much you'll conclude he's too young for the job.

Definitely a Sid-type comment.

What exactly has Stein done since he ran the T Wolves into the ground? It is not apparent from his press release. Most Gopher fans would say his time with the Wolves was controversial, divisive, and not very successful. Stein should be thinking about retirement rather than taking a 24/7 job that requires someone who can unite and motivate a program that probably has more disparate constituencies with their own agendas than any other DI program in America. Almost everything we have seen and heard from Stein since he retired from pro football is evidence that he is not up to the job. He is ancient history in Minnesota and he just does not have a record of accomplishment that qualifies him to be the Gophers AD.

Huh?

Stein is head and shoulders above several recent Gopher AD's. Maybe there are better candidates, but he would be a step up from Maturi and Teague, admittedly low bars to get over.

I think we should limit our candidates to those Sid has backed.

Not even remotely true. He would be over his head immediately.

Only if it's a package deal with Jack McCloskey.

Does his fundraising for the wolves or otherwise count as advancement? That's my main concern.

I'm one of that kind of people.

I worked with Bob Stein at the Timberwolves. I was witness to the lack of vision and lack of leadership he provided. I was at the weekly meetings when 20 year-olds, in their first jobs out of college would snicker as Bob slogged through an overly prepared and under delivered quip. He had no respect from people in the first job of their working career.

He may have been able face the task as a football player, but as a leader, he has a weak chin.

If he is hired, it is a epic failure.

In Bob Stein we have a potential AD who bleeds maroon and gold. He is an alumnus. He is an M man. Last M man or woman we had as an AD was who? Tom Moe? Been a long time. We keep hiring outsiders who are not patriotic to the maroon and gold. What did these outsiders do for us? Whose interests did they really represent?

Yep. A big F to the No for Stein as AD. This clown was nowhere to be found in the late 70's/80's when the program went down the toilet. He was busy promoting the Vikings.

Good God, you take what he's saying and that is proof that he actually has done these things and that he will be able to do these things as Gopher AD? Sorry, not that gullible. At the very least, this public campaign to be named should cause people to question. IMO, what he and Carter are doing is mainly trying to ensure Beth doesn't get the job because she didn't play football. I can see where a former U athlete might feel that way but doing it this way is just slimy. Lou Nanne I'm sure has some very definite ideas that he is making known. At least he's doing it privately. As much as I've heard him on the radio, he's not undercutting the process like these clowns are doing. Be a candidate. Fine, but don't issue press releases lauding your qualifications and citing backing from all sorts of unnamed people.

Hopefully, we keep Beth if someone else is AD. She is the glue that keeps the program together and make sure kids are getting taken care of both academically and personally.

What did she mean in her quip to one of her recent hire, she may not be around? Does that mean she will bolt if she did not get the permanent job?

This process is proof every semi-known quantity (that bleeds maroon and gold) will have vocal detractors (because familiarity breeds contempt) while most likely any unknown outsider, say an unlikable drunken lech that was in the right place at the right time (like VCU) will get mostly thumbs up from the peanut gallery.

The PC folks are bound to be upset with a traditional hire. The people that want someone that puts revenue sports first will be suspicious of Goetz. We even have someone that didn't like Stein's jokes. I don't like him either, but for other reasons.

I thought Bob Stein founded the Goal Line Club in 1980?

I am happy that a University of Minnesota alumnus, a Golden Gopher consensus "All American", and a Golden Gopher Football M man is throwing his hat in the ring. Beth may be wonderful, but I prefer Bob Stein's credentials. Beth is not even a Gopher. Who and what processes put all these foreigners in charge of our athletic department?

Pride of SLP! I would prefer to see someone else with the job though.

I didn't work with Bob Stein, but pretty easy to see he doesn't get it just by listening to him.

Sending a public press release, complete with bullet points, tells you all you need to know.
