Preseason AP POLL Out. Gophers = No Votes

:horse::horse::horse:

Unfortunately it sets the narrative for the whole season of rankings and bias.

You would think that you would be used to this by now. I would rather be like Minnesota than like Nebraska or Maryland, teams who are ranked prematurely some years but fail miserably to reach that status. At least on those rare occasions where we are ranked, we earned it by our play to that point in the season.

There is no really good reason to rank Minnesota right now. They haven't been a strong offensive team since 2019, they are starting the season with a RS freshman QB, lost some critical linemen, and lost their top two receivers from last season. In short, they are a classic "let's wait and see" team. As I mentioned, they did get 11 votes on the Coaches Poll.

Agreed. It's a meaningless poll. That said at this point it's better to be underrated than overrated

Must be high on Altmeier (sp?).

I think (according to ESPN) that Illinois leads the Big Ten in productive players returning (something like 75% overall). That coupled with the fact that they won 10 games last season is why expectations are high.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good rant. They may have accomplished a lot last year (hey, we beat them), and have a ton returning, but people overlook the total POTENTIAL that we MIGHT be good and didn't put us in the top 25.

August rankings don't matter.

It kinda does if the team upsets OSU. They might be lucky to break the top 20 if that happens now.

TAMU went 8-5 last year now top 20, meanwhile Iowa and Minnesota don’t get votes despite the same record last year. Also TAMU lost to USC in the bowl game.

Texas ranked 1

Ohio State ranked 3

Texas travels to OSU for the opener. Good luck, Texas!

Unless I’m mistaken we have finished one of PJ’s years ranked in the top 25?

Yes, #10 in 2019. An argument could be made that we should have been ranked in the top 25 in 2021. Had we not had that excruciating loss to Bowling Green we could have finished 10-3 and probably would have been (although with a 9-3 regular season record we likely would have had a tougher bowl opponent).

It will take a good win for the Gophers to get any traction in the polls.

Who was ranting? I was reporting what I read about Illinois' returning players. It's pretty logical why they are rated more highly than us in August. And, yes, I'm fully aware that the rankings in December won't match the rankings in August.
