Teague made an interesting comment yesterday (summarized below) in regards to the practice facility in saying that they hadn't started fundraising yet, but had gotten a nice "gift" towards it. Has anything else been reported on this yet, or is this the first we've heard of it? In order to mention it, I'm guessing this has to be a gift in the millions, right?

Teague on practice facility fundraising…We haven’t really started fundraising for it but we got a nice gift towards it. There is a strong possibility we’ll start architectural design this summer. It will take three years to get it done, from planning, design and building. This plan has a lot of football, women’s gymnastics, academic area. It will be really, really neat.

Will be nice when I see it done. Sound like it's going to take a few years. Any sites in mind for the facility? What general area will they key in on?

I thought I heard that the gift for the architecture/design happened last year or the year before? Or were those plans scrapped?

I sent him a 2 for one coupon to Sizzler but asked that it be kept anonymous.

It has been reported to numerous media outlets, that the women's rowing team doesn't feel it can continue to compete on a high level if they must share the Mississippi River. The Athletic Department is engaged in ongoing negotiations to purchase the rowing team their own river. Informed sources say once said river purchase is completed, work on a new practice facility will commence.

All the women's rowing team has to do is dig their own river.

My 'sources' tell me there will soon be an excess of rivers between Fargo and Moorhead, and they will be looking to unload them.

I would suggest that every G'holer send a $10,000 check. It will only take 10,000 of us to hit $100,000,000.00 How much do you really care?

CrocShots...never, never, never compliment station19. It encourages Parsk1 to say more stupid things.

Parski does a mighty fine job without me, however I will be working with him to step up his game.

I heard one possible site for the practice facility is the current Track and Field site. Track and Field would then move to St. Paul Campus.

And, here is a Sept 2012 Strib article on Practice facility plans.

Rayno: First step for basketball practice facility happening

Blog Post by: Amelia Rayno

Most would agree the basketball facilities are in need of some upgrades at Minnesota

New AD Norwood Teague came to the University of Minnesota with a reputation for fundraising and getting things done, and he’s quickly working to make that credit stick with the Gophers. Teague said in a phone conversation on Wednesday that he and the ‘U’ are shopping for master planning firms to get the basics in place for an overall facilities layout and timeline. Right now, Minnesota is “down to the 11th hour” in determining the right company, and will choose one next week, Teague said.

A major part of that eventual plan will include a basketball practice facility, something Teague calls “a need, not a want” at Minnesota, and a project that he believes has adequate financial support to be realistic.

Here’s what’s going on:

A master planning firm is the first step in realizing any new facilities. Since Teague came to Minnesota, he has talked about a master facilities plan on paper to give donors a clear vision of what they want and how they would go about it. “I’ve learned over the years that you really need to get a plan in place,” he said. “If you don’t, you’re going to make mistakes and you’re going to do too many run-offs that don’t make any sense in an overall plan. If you have an overall plan, it’s a lot easier to sell to donors that you have a very well-thought out plan using an outside consultant that does this around the country (and) that does this at other college athletic departments.”
This firm would: Look at space issues and needs as far as facilities -- What needs to happen now? What can wait? Teague said they will evaluate needs over up to a 15-year span. The firm would conduct interviews with coaches, the athletic department, and non-sports personnel such as people in the President’s office. Teague talked about the challenges the public often doesn’t realize. “We’ve got to get everybody to feel good about it on campus,” he said.
The firm would also come up with specific cost estimates “so we can get an idea of what kind of budget we’re looking at, what are our thresholds on what can you build for what amount of money,” Teague said.
The master facilities plan would revolve around two initial aspects: A practice facility for the women’s and men’s basketball programs and a football support facility. “Those two are going to be at the heart,” Teague said.
Teague has talked with Gopher alum T. Denny Sanford as a potential main donor for the football facility. Sanford had at one point planned to donate $35 million to the new football stadium (which would have been named for him), but an agreement was never reached.
There have been several individuals highly interested in funding a potential basketball practice facility, Teague said. “We feel like there is a good amount of resources there and people that are interested in knowing that we need it.”
Teague on the practice facility: “It is a need, more than a want here right now. We’ve got limitations on court space that are just not adequate, much less all the other amenities that would go into it.”
Some of the things Teague said he would want the facility to include are:
. o Two separate courts (one for men, one for women) that would be housed on either ends of the buildings (to prevent distractions that would come from the courts sitting side-by-side).

· o A weight room

· o A sports medicine center

· o Meetings rooms equipped for film work

· o Players’ lounges

· o Offices? This piece is up for debate, Teague said.

NEXT: Once the ‘U’ chooses a firm, they will begin working with them a week later, Teague said. The entire process should take about three months. From that, he said he hopes to move straight into a design stage, which would require hiring an architectural firm for specifics.
“It’s a massive recruiting tool and we know that full well,” Teague said. “We’re the only school in the Big Ten besides Northwestern that doesn’t have one. Coaches around the coach will tell you that it’s a program changer and really provides separation from other programs. That combined on top of the fact that it’s a need I think will motivate our donor base to be involved.”

This makes me feel a lot better. I did not understand why they had not started fund raising. It makes sense to have the entire plan with total price tag in order to effectively raise funds. Hopefully they can maximize corporate sponsorship or get big donors who want their names on various buildings.

So what is Maturi working on - if not fund raising?

Do we believe that $80M to $125M for a master building complex can be raised in donations? Maturi got no where with a $15M practice facility. (Glad he is gone and Teague is here). I am sure there are alternate plans being made in case the whole enchilada can't get financed. I hope we we make sure that the revenue sports are taken care of first.

My thoughts accompanied my initial $$$. Money talks, bu11 sh!t walks. Earmark you $$$ for the basketball practice facility.

Just trying to get more people thinking AND donating. Teague needs some momentum behind him. This is no time for anything but support for the programs. I hope Denny covers the football portion of the plan. It is rumored he will.

Go Gophers! Go Jerry! Go Rich! Support Woody's efforts. Not every place gets a good Woody. :)

our socialist attorney general, lori swanson, is going to screw this up for the U of M on the fundraising and gift front. can see her trying to drive a political wedge between the U of M, president kaler and t. denny sanford because of the recent talks of a potential merger between U of M-Fairview & Sanford health. because polit bureau premier swanson doesn't personally like that idea and wants to kill it.

Didn't Sanford already say he won't be donating to basketball, only football?

Yes, but why let facts get in the way. I was sharing a hot dog with Denny at the Vu last Friday night and he seemed quit unconcerned with the political issues surrounding the merger since he totally divested himself of Sanford Health stock several years ago.

stupid pud fly. Atta boy...In `ten to twenty years there will be only about `15 major Medical Centers in America. And then Health Care will really become expensive. Do we need an OT thread on this?

I think that it was during the press conference that Teague said that they were looking at building a larger practice facility... not just basketball, but football and some other sports as well. If that's the case, it'll cost more, but T. Denny may help donate toward it after all.

This is as uniformed a post I've seen on here, if you don't understand the enormous impact the U of M Medical Center has on the upper Midwest that's your problem. This is one of the single biggest quality of life decisions for the Twin Cities and beyond. If you're motive is the practice facility I'd ask you to reevaluate your priorities.

A post with no capital letters that starts out calling someone a socialist. One needs to take that one very seriously. Not. But that aside, put the University Hospital under a South Dakota for profit, because that way we get more money for sports? Really deep thinkin.'

You said it best.

I think we're going to see a completely rebuilt Bierman complex when the master plan gets released. The basketball facility will be a component, as well as football and other sports. It's probably cheaper overall to just build a single complex with distinct sport areas than to design and build a free standing basketball facility.

Also easier to collect donations when it's beneficial to all programs, rather than deciding who wants to pay for which sport.

hmm...check out this little ditty of a story just published by the red star of mpls. anything else you socialist-DFL loving dolts have to say about how this won't impact donor relations with sanford and the U of M? unfortunately, i fear the DFL fools who somehow run this state will continue to work to drive mr. sanford away from his beloved U of M. and that is too bad. personally, i trust denny sanford and his vision for the U of M, the U of M medical center, and his desire to help U of M athletics far more than i do a bunch of DFL bureaucratic idiots (and their public sector dependent minions) intent on continuing to suck off the teet of minnesota taxpayers for their entire "careers" rather than ever attempting to make it in the private sector.

University of Minnesota suspends donor discussions linked to Fairview merger

The University of Minnesota has suspended discussions with donors linked to the potential merger of the Fairview Health Systems with Sanford Health of South Dakota until the future of the U Medical Center is resolved.

The moratorium would cover any potential gifts from T. Denny Sanford, a wealthy alumnus who has been courted heavily for major contributions to the Golden Gopher athletic fund. Sanford is a prominent figure at Sanford Health, which he launched in 2007 with a $400 million donation.

University of Minnesota General Counsel Mark Rotenberg announced the moratorium at a Sunday hearing at the state Capitol called by Minnesota Attorney General DFL'er Lori Swanson. Rotenburg said the new policy should assure Minnesotans that any merger talks involving a change in control of the University of Minnesota Medical Center – now owned by Fairview – won’t be tainted by potential conflicts involving any “gifts for football or athletics or anything else.’’

Swanson welcomed the moratorium.

well of course little mrs. swanson did.

I'm not a Democrat and your rhetoric is laughable. The U of M Medical Center is far more important than a basketball practice facility. As I've said Sanford the organization will most likely never run the U of M Medical Center, this will get ironed out in the coming months with T. Denny still contributing to the U.
