Practice Facility "Gift"

Hopefully Sanford Health does not run anything here. Unless they move all of their headquarters here I do not see this happening. It would make more sense if the Mayo Clinic was involved but they are planning their own expansion. This thread is not about Hospitals but practice facilities. A University this size should not have to rely on T. Denny Sanford to save the athletic department.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This. T. Denny has become the Tony Dungy of fundraising. He could save us. But he's not going to. Certainly we can hope he'd contribute to the bigger facility plan, but we shouldn't be dependent on it. This merger will be resolved one way or the other before that gets off the ground. If it goes the wrong way and Denny take his wallet and goes home, we'll have to deal.

Aside from the hospital discussions, T. Denny is an important piece to the masterplan. The masterplan is going to be $100+ million. If they don't get a monster donation from Sanford, I fear the master plan probably won't get off the ground for years.

The U of M, for whatever reason, has had problems finding donors who understand what is required to be a top-flight, title-contending program in football and men's basketball. We have way too many small time donors who think they're big time donors. They have no clue what it takes to play with the big boys. It is easy to say things on message boards like "we're too big to have to rely on" one guy, but I think that is the reality right now. It sounds like they have someone on the verge of making a significant contribution and if he doesn't, there's a good chance we are likely in trouble on the plan.

Teague made an interesting comment yesterday (summarized below) in regards to the practice facility in saying that they hadn't started fundraising yet, but had gotten a nice "gift" towards it. Has anything else been reported on this yet, or is this the first we've heard of it? In order to mention it, I'm guessing this has to be a gift in the millions, right?

Teague on practice facility fundraising…We haven’t really started fundraising for it but we got a nice gift towards it. There is a strong possibility we’ll start architectural design this summer. It will take three years to get it done, from planning, design and building. This plan has a lot of football, women’s gymnastics, academic area. It will be really, really neat.

That'd be awesome. Of course I give my money to children's cancer research at the U through the Masonic Cancer Center, but basketball is important too.

hmm...check out this little ditty of a story just published by the red star of mpls. anything else you socialist-DFL loving dolts have to say about how this won't impact donor relations with sanford and the U of M? unfortunately, i fear the DFL fools who somehow run this state will continue to work to drive mr. sanford away from his beloved U of M. and that is too bad. personally, i trust denny sanford and his vision for the U of M, the U of M medical center, and his desire to help U of M athletics far more than i do a bunch of DFL bureaucratic idiots (and their public sector dependent minions) intent on continuing to suck off the teet of minnesota taxpayers for their entire "careers" rather than ever attempting to make it in the private sector.

University of Minnesota suspends donor discussions linked to Fairview merger

The University of Minnesota has suspended discussions with donors linked to the potential merger of the Fairview Health Systems with Sanford Health of South Dakota until the future of the U Medical Center is resolved.

The moratorium would cover any potential gifts from T. Denny Sanford, a wealthy alumnus who has been courted heavily for major contributions to the Golden Gopher athletic fund. Sanford is a prominent figure at Sanford Health, which he launched in 2007 with a $400 million donation.

University of Minnesota General Counsel Mark Rotenberg announced the moratorium at a Sunday hearing at the state Capitol called by Minnesota Attorney General DFL'er Lori Swanson. Rotenburg said the new policy should assure Minnesotans that any merger talks involving a change in control of the University of Minnesota Medical Center – now owned by Fairview – won’t be tainted by potential conflicts involving any “gifts for football or athletics or anything else.’’

Swanson welcomed the moratorium.

well of course little mrs. swanson did.
