PP; Gophers will miss out on big 3

Time will tell, let's let the pup get to work before we jump to any conclusions.

Holly Ellenson is the mother of Henry and Wally, who is a freshman guard with the Gophers. She was not happy the way Gophers athletics director Norwood Teague let the news of Tubby Smith's firing and Pitino's hiring get leaked through the media before telling the players.

"I feel like, the least the university can do is let the boys know what is going on," she said. "I haven't been pleased at all with that aspect of what has gone on.''

Sounds like Teague is killing recruiting...

Things leak, it's not uncommon for players to find out on the internet first. However, I do think they should have talked to the team at least once, especially considering there was no one else in charge of the program during the search. Foster said he had only talked to the Andre and Austin, and it appears Ellis left because of lack of communication. Communication with the team is not a small detail to have overlooked for Teague.

A more important quote from Holly:

"I am a fan of his father and the up-tempo offense and the tenacity on defense that he uses," Holly Ellenson said. "If he brings that to Minnesota, that's going to be a great fit for the guys we have here."

Go Gophers!!

What has to be understood, Teague had to go thru some legalese bull*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# before he could officially fire Tubby. Someone, not Teague, in that gathering leaked it out, so stop blaming Teague for that. Communication? Anytime and anywhere can be better, in all things.

Well I'm sure Mrs. Ellenson was thrilled Tubby chose not to redshift her son so he could give us those 10 valuable minutes this season.

Totally wrong.

Tubby wanted to redshirt him. The decision to NOT redshirt was made by the kid and his family.

If you'll reread my post, I was saying we shouldn't blame Teague for the Tubby firing leak because things leak for the very reason you just stated. However, someone should have communicated with the team at least once. It appears no one talked to them at all after the decision to fire Tubby was made. We lost one recruit over this, and it could have been easily avoided.

Guess I didn't know that a kids parents got to make that call. My apologies.

Someone had to bring it up: Who cares what Holly thinks, what we really need to know is what her best friend thinks. :D

No Problem, dtrain. redshirts in most cases are discussed with the parents before deciding. And rightfully so.

I wonder if there are going to be Tubby chants at the press conference tomorrow? Do you think they are going to frisk fans for rotten fruit and eggs?

You can't be serious. Of course looking at your past posts during this search - I'm afraid you might just be.

I hope that's not common practice. I think you owe the parents and the recruit the truth during recruiting, but the coach should make the call every single time.

Majority of people in MN wanted Tubby gone, at least the majority of Gopher fans. If he wasn't being sarcastic, his shoes are velcro.

I said discussed with family, and yes, I agree, the coach should, but in this case the Ellenson family did, and I think Tubby was wrong for this instance.

Parents have to be involved. Red-shirting or not is a Big decision. It affects how many credits a student takes. For example, Say a player is planning to red-shirt and plans school in that way. The RS is then pulled, the athlete is no longer on pace with school. This could cause parents to have to pay for 5th year if eligibility is done.

Sounds like the law man speaks for the majority >> sorry if some season ticket holders think college sports are about more than just winning.

+1. Someone connnected to the Trustees leaked it out. It wasn't like Kaler/Teague could avoid giving them a heads-up

Not enough of you given the direction on renewals.... Since you didn't need to worry about winning a majority of conference games with Tubby, was the college sports (non-winning) appeal for you the hockey line changes by Tubby or Tubby throwing players under the bus after the games?

Again, I was defending Teague on the firing getting leaked for the very reasons you and Dr. Don brought up. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that in my post. I was pointing out that at some point after the decision to fire Tubby, Teague should have probably have contacted the team and that his failure to do so is what caused Ellis to decommit.

Kids don't build relationships with ADs, they build it with coaches...when all the coaches are fired, nothing is going to make a huge impact. Yes it was crappy that some disgruntled regent that liked Tubby or Maturi (whichever) decided to screw Teague by leaking Tubby's termination...but that is water under the damn now.

And truthfully, even if Teague would have went to each players dorm room and held their hands while this process was going on...it would still be 100% on the new coaching staff to win them over. As far as Ellis...not sure why he moved so quickly...my guess is his second choice called him every day to let him know how he was being mistreated...not with our new coach in place...lets see if we can win him back...that is if Coach P wants him back.

Our chances of landing any of the big 3 decreased significantly when Tubby's team was eliminated before the Sweet 16.

This is probably Teague's first ever high profile firing as well. He's used to replacing successful coaches, not over the hill big name under performing coaches. The next time he has to fire a basketball or football coach (hopefully for not at least a decade :D ) it will probably go a little more smooth.
