PP; Gophers hoping to sign California junior college guard Julian Welch

Sounds like Julian is a Gopher as long as his visit goes well. I suppose this means we can't have Henry Brooks and Julian. Oh well, we really need a point guard more.

Coleman, Andre Hollins, Welch & Brooks replace Blake, Nolen, Devoe & Trevor.

Hey...perhaps Tubby can recruit against the likes of Kent St after all. FOT will be so proud.

Given the fact that many top programs aren't looking for juco talent, juco players offer lists won't always reflect their talent level compared to players coming out of high school. Now you will probably rip Tubby for being in the position to need juco help, which I won't necessarily disagree with, but my point is just because he is considering Kent State doesn't mean he isn't talented enough to play in the Big Ten. Hopefully he will make a strong impact for us.

It seems like Welch is more of a combo guard than a pure PG which makes his recruitment even more of a head scratcher to me. We already have Chip and bring in Andre who also fits the combo guard description. I am not sure I'd even call Maverick a pure pg, and I have my doubts that he can play at this level.

Does he know where he will transfer to after next year if he does sign with us?

I know Tubby likes Mav and Mav is a good kid. However, this would mean that Tubby is recruiting two guys over the top of him. I am wondering if there will be an effort to get Maverick to move on to a DII or lower tier D1 team if we sign Welch or another point.

I don't think we will see Mav next season, and I'm not sure at all how I feel about that. I guess it depends on how Mavs role with the team was presented to him when he signed.

Really, it's not just about having a "pure" point, it's about having guards who can handle the ball and put pressure on the defense. Right now, we have no one who can do that (Chip is the closest we have, but his ball handling is suspect). Even if we had Devoe, who is not a typical point, we would be in decent shape, as we saw last season. The reason our offense has whittled is not just because we don't have that prototypical point guard, but because we don't have anyone who can truly penetrate the defense and get shots for not only themselves but others as well. From what I've seen, it looks like both Hollins and Welch can do just that.

If Maverick said he wanted to give it a go at the highest level and Tubby positioned it as a -we'll let you give it your best shot next year deal- then it was good for everybody. I'm glad he's here, but it's obvious that it will be tough for him to make an impact and the recruiting effort speaks loud and clear on that.

Not a big recruiting-scene guy, but I'm on board with getting Welch. I like the sounds of him.

I see a little Mel Newbern in Chip. I hope we get in other point guards and maybe Andre is that guy, but I am pretty confident that Chip could fill that role in a pinch over time. Newbern came in as a guy who could get to the hole and finish, very athletic, taller but not quite as fast as Chip. I think we are just scratching the surface with Armelin. I'd bet his ball handling becomes pretty darn good with time and his defense will come as well.

Expect Gophers To Have 13 On Scholarship And 2 Walk-Ons Next Year

F Williams - Osenieks - Halvorsen
F Mbakwe (or recruit) - Walker - Dawson
C Sampson - Iverson - Eliason
G Coleman - Austin Hollins - Armelin
G Andre Hollins - Welch (or recruit) - Ahanmisi

Injuries and transfers happen.

Yeah, it's not like he can't become a point in the future or something like that. Really, if he did work on his handles, he could become quite dangerous out there, cause his shot is already improving, so tacking on handles, he could be a real tough guard for the opposition come his junior and senior seasons.

I don't mind Mav either, Chip needs to really work on his ball handling though. I think he will too, based on the rumor he had Blake help with his jump shot ... shows a strong desire to get better.

Mav I would love to see stay and develop, I think he could have a bright future. He has a great attitude and work ethic and the improvement we've seen out of him this year alone has been awesome.

But, no offense to Mav, I would take DeAndre over him (if we really do have any chance)

I think use Devoe's scholly on Welch or a different juco PG though.

Hope that Daniels and/or Brooks wait to decide long enough to see what Trevor and/or Rodney (or others too) do after the season.

However, I think if Daniels says, "I want to be a Gopher!" you can't wait to get him and you make the room for him yesterday. Henry Brooks may be the same, but I don't know as much about him and he isn't ranked like Daniels is.

sounds like (from Tubby) he needs to improve his defense too. I am confident he will get there though. Seems like a hard working player.

What am I missing with Chip? Does he have any of the instincts of a point? Don't get me wrong - I like his game and think he will have an important role on this team, but I just don't see him being a floor leader. Being a "point guard" is much more than being able to handle the ball.

I wouldn't be at all shocked to see Mav get sent on down the road if we can get somebody to replace him. If we have any shot at Welch and Daniels, we've got to make some tough decisions. I'm absolutely against a coach attempting to force a kid to transfer, but I don't mind a coach coming to a kid and telling him "look, you're not going to play at all these next three years, and I'll do my best to help you find a program at which you're a better fit."

Mav may never be a huge contributor, but do we really want to go down the road of only having 2 PG's again? We'd have Welch, Andre Hollins and? We've seen how that story ends.

Most of our disagreements are on the other board but you aren't even close on this one, bga. Newbern was bigger, stronger, a better shooter and a better ballhandler from day one. Chip may be a good player one day but he won't be a just below elite player like Newbern.

Give the freshmen time ( over the summer) to work on ball handling skills. It's not likely they experienced Big Ten pressure in high school, so they need time to learn. I think next year they will all be better with the ball. It wasn't expected of them to be a starting point guard this year. I really love Chip and Austin and expect them to see significant important minutes next year. Mav needs to work on learning the offense and running the team. He has to think too much right now. Someone with more speed will put Mav on the bench.

That's not a good team. Yikes...

I just love the BS patchwork job Tubby does. One 4 star kid in the last two years! Let's look at the facts...this Welch kid is considering Kent frickin State and Minnesota. SOUNDS LIKE MAV, CONSIDERED THE GOPHERS AND BOISE. Bravo Tubby...bravo.

I feel the same. Chip just isn't a point guard. I wish he could be and solve some issues, but I don't see it happening. I do think that Chip's biggest obsticle is his ball handling. Any other obsticle is secondary to that imo.

We really don't have one guy that 'really' handles the ball well. It's mind boggling.

I'm with most of you that I would like to see Tubby find a better fit for Mav. But does Tubby really not value Mav as much as most posters here? Mav's played in 25 games this year and is averaging 9 minutes a game...

Mel Newbern was perhaps one of my top three all time favs as a Gopher. But his first year, which was as a soph because of Prop 48- Clem had him on a yoyo string - he turned the ball over a lot. He was never a great shooter- he was a very, very good scorer. What I said is that I see a little bit of Melvin in the way Chip plays. What I didn't say is that Chip will be "just below Melvin" although it's not impossible that it would happen.

wow, sweet post........ you haven't seen nearly half of that roster play in the college game before. kind of quick to assume Andre, Joe, Oto, or any of the other newcomers won't be solid contributors, don't you think?! Looks like a better lineup than we're throwing on the court now, if anything we'll have more depth. Take a look at the other B10 teams and who they are losing. We'll be fine.

Ok Mr. Recruiting Coordinator. Who is YOUR list of who the Gophers Should go after and who we have offered?
