Niko Medved post game notes (not edited) on KFAN with Grimmer and Al Nolen:
What a gut check. I thought, you know, I was having fun. It was pretty but, man, looked like we set basketball back about 40 years there in the first, you know, eight, nine minutes or whatever. But that's kind of how we had to play. Man, we needed to muck it up. We needed to guard, kind of get the tempo where we wanted it, and
man, what it got. I mean, our guys and we called Eight, they made the run. We call a timeout. I think they went up two or one, I can't remember, was 2020, and the response from our guys out of that timeout was just incredible. And we just never looked back from there.
Again, just a huge gut check. And yeah, once we kind of swung back at them and retook the lead and one up, I thought we kind of broke their spirit a little bit. You know, we made it hard for them to score. I thought our zone and what we were doing was was really effective. And you look at it, I thought we only played six guys tonight. I thought Kai Shin holsters minutes were awesome. I thought, you know, he had a couple of steals without his defense was really, really good. Obviously, he had that, that monster dunk that I think even just kind of took our energy level to another level. And Grayson too. I mean, for him to play 37 minutes, and we needed them all. I mean, once he went out of the game right there, just defensively, we were really breaking down. And so thank God he stayed out of foul trouble.
Well, you know, we were being really active, and that we knew when the ball, you know, hit the high post or the short corner, we really needed to crowd it on the dribble. We didn't do a very good job. I thought against Washington, you know, and now the that kid's a load too, but so is Biddle and their guys. And I thought we did a much better job tonight of kind of swarming, and when they got it in the high post, when they put it on the floor, we just really went in there and made plays on the ball and made it difficult, and they missed some shots, but I thought a lot of their threes were challenged. I thought we did a really good job of closing out and challenging their threes. And then guys, I mean, you look at it to play zone that much and to out rebound bigger team. I just thought we scrapped like crazy.
On Grayson Grove: He's really developing into a really good defensive player, you know, he's really learning how to play, plays really hard to and that, you that that's a talent. So he brings a lot of energy, you know, to the game. And as he continues to get stronger, and as he continues to get a little bit more comfortable on the offensive end, you know, I think he's got a chance to be a terrific player. But tonight, man, he really answered the bell from us, like he said when he went out, and he picked up what is third right there, and we tried to give him a quick blow. And, I mean, the it was really easy for them in the interior with like, Hey, we got to get him back in the game. And thank God we did.
One could say whatever they want. We haven't caught a break. You know what I mean? So sometimes, you know, the basketball gods find a way to work in our favor. And I thought when that one banked in, I'm like, it's our night. We earned it, but it's our night tonight that, yes, yeah, you're not going to turn that down. Heck no.
On Bobby Durkin: I think, you know, early in the year, he was really struggling with confidence, and I thought he's putting a lot of pressure on himself, you know, and wanted to, he works so hard. He's in the gym all the time, and, you know, just needed to take a deep breath and relax. I just, you can just see him every day that goes by has become a little bit more comfortable and confident. Comfortable and confident in what we're doing. I mean, that shot he buried in the corner was a massive shot, but I think what you're saying now is true is he's finding a way on the defensive end to make some deflections, to guard the ball, to come up with key rebounds. And so he's really doing it in every way for us right now. He's one of our best passers and field guys. So he's really playing his role at a high level for us.
On his snack time snack tonight:
I got to see what they have here out west. I'm an Ice Cream Sandwich guy, for sure, and it just depends what kind they have it. I'll definitely go that. And then the other one is just, I'm gonna mix it up. We got that Wisconsin cheese. I'm not doing that. So maybe they got something unique here. Otherwise, I might go with some pistachios.
Yeah, stuck with some bad Wisconsin cheese. Yeah, I'm not, I'm not listen, fool me once.
What a group I mean, just these guys, man, they just, you're trying to build a culture and a program. And these guys, I mean, guy. I hope everybody realizes we had one post player available. We played six guys, and these guys went on the road and beat an Oregon team like that. What a freaking effort.
