Post Game Thread: Gophers win 3rd in a row, CRUSH Maryland!

On top of all of the things on the field, coaching was great and looks way different than past years with PJ. A few years ago I could have seen us running twice, getting to 3rd and long, and ending up punting on most drives.

I think PJ may have passed through that phase earlier this season and realized that the team was going to have to live or die by the passing game. The running game worked well against USC but it's been a struggle against the other power conference teams. Tonight it started to click later in the game but that came after assaulting Maryland through the air for most of the game.

Maryland game planned to totally stop the run and to the coaches credit they had a pass heavy gameplan ready. To Max and the receivers credit, they executed it well. Loved the game with the exception of some starters in that late of a blowout. Hope Joyner is OK.
The game plan coming in was to throw the ball. Maryland pass defense is poor and they didn't get much presure on Max. Even so, it was impressive that our passing game could not be stoppped even when the Terps knew exactly what we were doing.

Proud of PJ's growth! I thought for sure we would start running every play once we got up 21-0, but nope! This new PJ is sticking with what works and I like it.
PJ is trusting the coordinators and the game plan. He is now beyond game interference because he has two guys he really believes in.

Yes, this is personal growth. We should be happy with this.

I don’t disagree with you entirely but I think you can largely chalk that up to the quality of QB play compared to prior years.

Up big, we had less than 30 seconds of game time and only 1 TO left before halftime after getting the KO following MD's 1st TD.

We went for it. (And got a FG, BTW.)

Who TF are you, and what have you done with PJ?
Yup. I thought that series and the first after half were so critical and indicative of the mindset shift. They had a game plan to be aggressive in the passing game both b/c Maryland pass D is suspect and their O actually can score quickly, and they stuck with the plan. I was shocked they came out throwing after half and moved it down the field so easily. Really was great to see.

Huge win for bowl eligibility and showing what we can do. On top of all of the things on the field, coaching was great and looks way different than past years with PJ. Would have been nice to see the run game get going but great coaching to take what we were given.
Let's go back and give Fleck real credit for choosing Brosmer in the portal. That first decision has triggered all of the improvement in the pass game and game planning.

Brosmer has really been impressive the past 3-4 games. It is a delight to have more-than-competent QB play. With the possible exception of 2019 (THE Tanner Morgan year), our QB has been a liability for the last 10+ years. THIS is so much fun!

I am glad to see the team playing better and every win is fun especially to get closer to a bowl. That being said, it is kind of sad that the Big10 East/West conferences are gone with the expansion. We would be talking about how getting to 3-2 in the conference puts us back in the West race and starting to think about scenarios.

Oh well that is the past. Fun win today.

I had a good feeling going into the game. Doesn't count for much but I figured the Gophers could match-up well. After watching that first drive, I was sold on the chances to win.

It was pretty amazing watching Brosmer play today. I think this methodical, efficient and fine-tuned passing is what we were expecting from such an experienced player. That's not to say he's been a disappointment before, the guy has been giving a maximum effort and led the team to victory.

But this was a game where it really "clicked," if that makes sense. I'm excited to see how the team plays next week coming off this win.

Anyone remember back when there were fans here ready to fire Fleck....good times.....

Awesome win today. Took charge early and never looked back. Sets up a big one with Illinois next week. We are due for a win against Bielema and they are coming off a really tough 5 game stretch with multiple ranked opponents and some overtime games.

So much fun to see the coaches trusting Brosmer and letting him run the show. He makes great decisions and gets everyone involved. D continues to play really well, score and Maryland yardage totals are misleading.

Maybe Brosmer is the guy who breaks the Bert Curse for PJ and the Gophs? I can dream!
Come on GopherGrandpa.....have some faith.....everytime I read your posts I feel like you are waiting for that other shoe to drop. :)

Brosmer is playing at a really high level over this 3 game winning streak. If he and the offense keep executing at a high level and the D keeps doing what they are doing we have a great shot of beating Illinois, Rutgers and Wisconsin. We will be an underdog against Penn State but it's at home so and we usually give them a battle.

Anyone remember back when there were fans that said Brosmer wasn't a Big 10 QB? Probably the same group of fans.......

Winning and playing better has a way of changing opinions and outlooks. Always changing in sports, unless there is another motivation.

I hope to see the media realize that we have a legit pass defense. Reading the media predictions they all felt we would get torched through the air, even though we held USC and others this year. Maryland picked up some air yards during garbage time but when it mattered, we shut them down.

I think we beat Illinois and get that curse we win out. I’m not impressed with Penn State. To bad we 💩 the bed early in season. If the team was grinding like it is now, I think we are 8-0. Shoulda woulda coulda..win out

I’m not defending the pass blocking but Maryland was completely selling out against the run, even after Max had diced them up. Those plays in the backfield were made by good LBer coming straight downhill. It’s part of the reason the pass game was so wide open.

We need to get better run blocking but if teams just sell out completely on the run, we need to keep making them pay with the pass.
Exactly this! You have to take what the defense gives you.

Brosmer made it look effortless. Big defensive turnovers including a pretty pick 6. Run game showed a faint pulse. Koi on punt returns is doing athletic things. AFAIK Dragan made all his kicks. It was such a laugher I dozed off in the third quarter and didn’t wake up until after the game was over.

Even in a demolition that was never as close as the final score PJ ended up passing on 54% of offensive downs. These are not the same old Gophers.
The number of times he put the ball exactly where it needed to be was elite! Jackson and Spencer were highlight reels. Brockington and Geers made clutch grabs.

Best game since Auburn, but NC and the second half of Iowa did just happen not long ago. The most important stretch of games is ahead of us and it appears bright, but while the past three games weren’t against the little sisters of the poor, those teams kinda suck and there isn’t reason yet to get too big for your britches.

Yep, been an up and down year, like most years. But the early season stupidity around here where some posters were legit calling for Fleck's head has proven to be the foolishness that many of us clearly called it out as.

Two guys who don't care jackschiff about Bret's Curse are Brosmer and Perich. That's a good start.

How would you like the job of trying to convince Koi that Minnesota can't beat Bret?

Our receivers were great. Max was great. Pass protection was awesome against a supposedly very good pass rush team. Their QB, 8th rated in nation, was not good. Our pass rush was very good. It was really fun to watch.
