Post Game Thread: Gophers Lose Back and Forth Game to Northwestern, Fall to 6-5 as Defense Struggles Again

I just can’t believe how bad the defense is. They look out of place, especially in coverage. It’s 3rd and long and their WR can just easily run 12 yards down field and sit in between two defenders to get a 1st down.

The fire fleck noise will start again, you will never get a big time coach at the u as its too hard to recruit and not enough money to outbid bigger schools for talent

Occasionally, we see things under PJ that we’ve never seen before today I saw our highest NL player jog for 20 or 30 yards instead of running — right into a DB and fall over. Been watching football for 50 years I’ve never seen anything like it.
I thought the same thing. He can go elsewhere as far as I’m concerned. He can’t stay healthy anyway. The NIL dollars need to be spent on both lines and the QB. Fleck need to fire his DC and he needs to pay his coordinators to at least the mid point in the conference. We are getting exactly what we are paying for at the moment. Might be getting even less.

Denaburg is worthless on any kick over 40 yards.....but this loss is 100% on the defense. 35 points on the road against this Northwestern team should have been more then enough to get the W.

To give up 38 points and over 500 yards of offense is a friggin joke. Missed tackles, missed assignments, and they managed to make Stone look like the second coming of Drew Brees.

Somebody on the D needed to make a damn play and nobody stepped up. Very disappointing. Offense wasn't perfect by any means but they did more then enough.

We need a massive infusion of talent on the defensive side of the ball from the portal after this season. If the D-Line doesn't pressure the QB the secondary can't cover anything. I have no clue how much to pin on Collins directly but his unit has been rough for much of the year and was downright terrible today.

One thing that is clear about Collins though is that his gameplanning leaves a lot to be desired. Teams are able to pick us apart early and it leads to really slow starts to games.

Very disappointing to lose a game like this when the offense puts up what should have been way more then enough points to win against a Northwestern team that is not good on offense.

any talk of firing Fleck will be dumb but after today Collins should definitely be on the hot seat because there is no way Northwestern should have been able to do what they did to our defense today.

Rossi might be available next year give him a big raise.
I’m going to throw this out there. Hire Kliff Kingsbury as OC. He’s still getting paid by the Cardinals. He might welcome the challenge.

Why would NFL oc move to NCAA ?

525 yards given up on d. That is why we lost. Pathetic defensive effort.

What is a massive improvement?
I started watching with Wacker. So almost everything from that time frame to today.

This year from last- not nearly enough.

Personally, I enjoyed the squad a lot more under Mason warts and all. I think generally his schedules were much much tougher. The Big Ten was a different animal back then and he had some great players to watch with a fun offensive system.

That may be true but we always started with cupcakes that did not prepare us well for the Big 10 +PSU main course very well.

I'm curious as to whether the offensive line has sucked so badly this year because they're facing a low effort defensive line in practice and the defensive playcaller is not challenging them at all. I bet they're amazing in practice.

Most offensive coordinators in the NFL make about a $1 million a year. Of course there are exceptions. Pay him $1 million. PJ is getting paid 7 times that. Don’t just hire a head coach and walk away. Higher a
team.

He’s the Commander’s OC.

Kingsbury probably want's to be NFL head coach again. Someone like him is zero level, attainable being realistic on where he will be targeting. Face facts, our weather sucks balls in the winter. Kingsbury lived in Arizona.
