POST GAME THREAD: GOPHERS BEAT USC!!!

At halftime I had an oddly calm feeling the guys were going to pull it off. The run game was clicking, Taylor and Majors were running hard. Brosmer was on. They were putting some pressure on Moss and he was not on, couldn’t find targets downfield. The missed FG. PJ going for it at the end felt like an end of an era, in a good way. Who knows, maybe he doesn’t do that versus a stronger defense but old PJ takes the points and tries to hang on. Koi emerging as a special player at safety is one of the bigger stories this season. Makes the defense instantly better. This team has enough talent to play with anyone and it feels like PJ is loosening up just a little bit and letting guys play and coaches coach. Satisfying win for the coaches, guys, and program.

Huzzahs all around, great job PJ.
With as explosive is the USC offense can be going for it is probably safer than taking the fg anyway. At worst it’s a tie game going to ot rather than losing by 4.

Obviously, It really changed the USC response. In a game where they scored 17 points, driving the full length of the field with no timeouts seems much more daunting than only needing to play for a field goal/ overtime.

It is fascinating how most fan bases react after a stinging defeat.

Almost always some post to the effect of "unacceptable loss"!

I know we have been guilty of this as well. Feels good to be on the "up side" of this......

It's been an odd season so far. Gophers are 3-3 - BUT they could easily be 4-2, 5-1 or even 6-0.

coming off a win, things always seem brighter. that, however, does not negate or erase the fact that the Gophers have played 4 games against P4 opponents. the one time they played a full 60 minutes of football they won. the 3 times they did not play a full 60 minutes of football, they lost.
so what do we make of this team? they have the potential to be very good - but they also have the potential to shoot themselves in the buttocks.

here's the rest of the schedule with current records for opponents:

UCLA (1-4)
Maryland (3-2)
Illinois (4-1)
Rutgers (4-1)
Penn State (5-0)
Wisconsin (3-2)

Gophs need to win 3 games to be bowl-eligible. Let's say they beat UCLA, Maryland and Wisconsin. that gives them 6 wins. to win 7 or 8 games, they would need to pull off another upset or two. and they could do it. If they can play a full 60 minutes of football.

doing it once is fun. but good teams are able to repeat those type of performances. We may not learn much against UCLA, but after that, the last 5 games of the (regular) season, we will find out if the Gophers are truly a good team.

Side note.

I find the use of "unacceptable" in those cases weird.

Most of the time it carries no consequences / or any real world differences compared to say "acceptable". Like some rando fan can't accept a loss.... whose problem is that?

FWIW - in my opinion, the people who like to use "unacceptable" are the same people who always want to fire people - fire the coach, fire the coordinators, etc. for some reason, they want to show everyone how upset they are with the loss - like they care more than other fans.

Alabama just lost to Vanderbilt. I don't think they're going to fire the Coach. a good team played a bad game. it happens. in college sports today, with the portal and NIL, I think the gap between the best teams and worst teams is narrowing and will continue to narrow.

The commie dinks still the only BIG team to lose to Hollywood

If anyone has interest in rewatching the entire game minus the commercials, there is a YouTube channel currently out there that has it. At last until BTN requests they pull it down.

I don't think beating Rutgers will constitute much of an upset. Their record looks nice but they should have lost that game against Washington as they were thoroughly outplayed but the Washington kicker missed 3 kicks.

If we play well.....UCLA, Maryland, Rutgers and Wisconsin are all very winnable games. Illinois and Penn State will be much tougher but don't look unbeatable. There is very little margin for error and no gimmies on the schedule, but the potential to finish with a solid record is definitely there if the team that has played the last 5 quarters keeps on showing up.

Gotta win the next one against UCLA to put themselves in a great position to at the very least get to bowl eligibility.

Along these lines, my favorite is the wailing about "accountability" as in "someone neds to be held accountable". Never sure exactly what that means.

I asked accounting and they said that 24 is in fact MORE than 17. Accountability confirmed.

If you listen to some posters heads should roll after every loss. And when they don't then the assumption some make is that nothing is being done to try and correct whatever mistakes were made that may have led to the loss.

I think UCLA will be a very dangerous game. We will need to play the full 60 just as others have mentioned. They are desperate for a win. They have to be one of the most talented 1-4 teams ever. They had moments against Penn State and LSU. My guess is they are thinking this is a chance for them to get a W in the BigTen.

Can't sleep on them.

Better yet, there is NO way that professional officials should've gotten the call on the field wrong to begin with.

There isn't a single USC player, coach or fan who actually believes that Brosmer didn't cross the goal line by a significant margin. None.
Well, if it will make coach Riley feel better, his TE #18 held Koi while his RB ran by for the score that put them up 17-10.

Correct...he didn't seem to mention that his sieve of an OL was handing out bear claw pastries to our defense throughout the entire game.

We have no sure thing wins left on our schedule and can't afford to sleep on anyone.

We have a number of very winnable games but we could also lose every game left on our schedule if we don't play well.

USC always loses to more physical teams. They made a habit of losing to teams like Utah and Stanford (after Harbaugh made them a hard nosed team). I wonder how many of those losses were unacceptable. USC better upgrade their lines and style or keep getting punched by BG10 teams.

I would love to know why the officials on the field didn't think he was across because the ball was at like the 1 foot line and the LOS clearly moved forward quite a bit at the snap. On the TV coverage it didn't look like there was any possible way he wasn't in. Only question that came up later was when the ball came out but that didn't seem to even be a factor on the initial call. Who knows.....it all worked out in our favor so not going to lose any sleep over it :)

with the technology available today, they should be able to put some kind of a chip in the football that would indicate when the ball crossed the plane of the goal line. take it out of the hands (or eyes) of the refs. If the ball crossed the plane, a red light is activated and it's a touchdown.

the same technology could potentially be used to help spot the ball and/or determine when a 1st down has been achieved.

I mean, if an app on my phone can track where I drive, and tell me if I make a sudden stop and jam on the brakes, we should be able to figure out definitively whether a bleeping football is in or out of the end zone.
