I wonder what everyone blathering about "accepting mediocrity" has to say about this.

Smart comment by Pitino. Set the bar as low as possible so it looks that much better when you surpass it. There will definitely be some growing pains though, it's not easy to go from rarely pressing to pressing the entire game.

Looks like Pitino is a graduate of the same school of set expections low like our current football coach. Kind of surprised he didn't give the more traditional stock answer of needing time to see the players in action before determining what to expect for next season.

The cupboard isn't bare but there are some holes to fill on this roster and they are in a tough spot recruiting wise to get much done for next season at this point so it is very possible that making the tournament next year might be a tall order.

I wonder what everyone blathering about "accepting mediocrity" has to say about this.

Do you think he told the fan(s) at FIU that he was going to come within 3 points of the NCAA tourney?

I'd like to see how the question was asked. I would be very surprised if his goal is not to at least reach the NCAA tournament.

Not a team in the entire NCAA can guarantee an Appearance in The Dance. Let's let things play out, I mean, Jeez, we are a long way from next season.

I heard he said his goal was to get the #9 seed in the Big Ten tournament by his 6th year.

I wish he would have said it was the best shooting team he's ever had....

Coachspeak.

What's said publicly often doesn't match what's said privately. I'd guess a different message will be sent in the locker room, in addition to the "Get better every day" message he delivered at the press conference.

Pitino seems to be a smart guy. He knows he likely has a borderline NIT/NCAA-type team, so there's no need to proclaim, "NCAA tourney or bust."

Undersell, hopefully followed by overachieve. ... usually the best way to go when there's a new sheriff in town.

What does this quote have to do with "accepting mediocrity"?

What is your handle on the Tech board?

He's saying the NCAA tournament is unrealistic that's below accepting mediocrity.

What does this quote have to do with "accepting mediocrity"?

You're the head coach of a Big Ten school (where your predecessor was fired for making the Tournament 50% of the time), and making the Tournament is "pretty unrealistic"? If that's not "accepting mediocrity", what is? Hell, that's "accepting less than mediocrity". Tubby would have been DESTROYED if he ever said anything like this.

What is your handle on the Tech board?

So because I think Tubby got a raw deal, that means I'm not a Gopher fan anymore?

He didn't say that exactly.

For those who haven't been paying attention, "accepting mediocrity" is settling for last year's results being the best anyone can do at Minnesota. It has nothing to do with realistic expectations for the coming season considering the state of the roster.

How is the NCAA tournament not realistic?

There is a huge difference between setting expectations low so you can over deliver, and accepting mediocre results once they have happened. Can you really not see the difference?

You may disagree with the coach. But he's now gotten a close look at the roster he's inherited.

So has everyone on this board and most would say that the tournament should be the goal for next season.

I've repeated that I'll be as happy as a clam with more than six conference wins. I don't think you're being honest or accurate when you say "most would say..." above.

Oh, and whether you like it or not, Pitino is the new coach.

There's still time for you to become a Gopher fan.

per Marcus' article:

"I would think that would be pretty unrealistic because you lost two very good players in Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams," Pitino told the Pioneer Press on Monday, April 15. "My expectations are, honestly, whenever you take a new job, to establish my brand on these guys, the culture I want to do."

Pitino, who coached Florida International to an 18-14 record last season, has said he wants to play a more up-tempo and aggressive, pressing style.

"It's not what Coach Smith did is wrong," he said. "He did a lot of great things, and he's going to continue to do a lot of great things in this game. But I've just got to now install my system and install the way I do things."

Go Gophers!!

Johnny- We still don't know how the question was phrased. For example expectation is different than goal. A goal is something that we strive for and if we get a lot better- we reach it. An expectation is more based on what we see. My expectation about Coach Pitino is that his goal is that we would reach the NCAA tourney. Currently he sees that there is a gap. Depending on how well the players develop and depending on who coach P can add to the roster, the expectation may change but the goal probably won't.

Go Gophers!!

You get Tarick Black and you can damn well be sure that another tourney win is the expectation this year, Richie.

What should he have done, guaranteed a tournament appearance and said we might make a sweet sixteen run?

I'll judge coach Pitino the same way I judge all coaches: by their team's performance on the field and improvement over time.

There's nothing wrong with acknowledging what every fan in this state is expecting.

And what are Minnesota fans expecting from a team that just finished 8-10 in the Big Ten, loses 4 seniors including 2 of the top 4 players on the team, and has no highly rated players coming in?

Rodney is addition by subtraction. Get Tarick Black and you are just as good as last year.

Shocking Coach P didn't lead with, "Well, losing MN's own RW will actually benefit the team. Plus if I can land Tarick Black, then look out baby. We're comin!!"
