Pitino presser: I didn't think we could find a more heartbreaking way to lose...

Pretty sure I saw Hollins guarding him multiple times. They rotated between all the guards.

You must have been watching a different game than GopherJake and I against OSU, because Hollins got lit up in the 1st half by Russell, and did not guard him in the 2nd half. My biggest criticism of Pitino all season has been that he didn't take Hollins out of that 1st half against OSU earlier, because he was horrendous on D.

100% positive that Andre Hollins guarded him in the 2nd half on multiple possessions. It was definitely a rotation of all 3 guards with Mason getting the majority of the minutes on him.

Was at the game and remember seeing Hollins on Russell in the 2nd half. Maybe it wasn't as much as I remember, I don't know

Even if that's true, it still serves my point. They changed the guarding assignment for Andre in the 2nd half drastically. That said, if he did share duties, it wasn't much. Bottom line - Andre has looked pretty bad on defense and shortening the leash on a tough assignment is probably a good idea. I'm wondering if all the chasing has also tired him out and affected his offense. He is definitely coming up short on a lot of long range shots lately.

No, he did not. He didn't guard him in the 2nd half. Mathieu and Mason did. Pitino switched his assignment.

You make some good points. And maybe Andre was the "only" choice to guard Uthoff. That said, I would question a coaching decision - on the surface - to have a 6'2" man guarding a 6'9" man.

Who the hel! else would guard Uthoff though? If we put Joey on him, it's an easy layup. The defense - forcing a 15-18 footer late in the shot clock - did not result in a bad outcome. The other team hit a tough shot.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion. His own coach declared him our best perimeter defender. Say what you want about Pitino but he's been a straight shooter ever since he got here. It's not like he's saying that to try and stroke Andre's ego.

Vincent
Grier

That was a large part of Monson's magic in 2006. But I guess he recruited and coached him, so he does deserve some of the credit. Grier saved his job, if you ask me.

Not really. We still fired him after that season. Then un-fired him. Then fired him again 7 games into the next season. Joel sure was something.

i found a more hearbreaking way to lose a game, imo.

the worst part of this clip is that it is Pitino's mentor Billy Donavon's Florida team tipping an airball into the FSU basket for the loss. I hope that isn't the coaching we can expect to get in the future.

First time poster here, but have long enjoyed this site (and all your contributions) from afar.

Obviously, a really tough loss. I think the 0-5 start to the Big is attributable to a range of factors, but I'll hone in on one. Certainly our rebounding and interior defense has been problematic, but given our personnel, many of us recognized this would be challenge at the beginning of the season. IMO Walker isn't really the problem, as much as it is the lack of rebounding and interior defense at the 4 spot. I think Joey brings a lot to the position, and he has/will make some big shots for this team, but it is what it is. By the way, virtually every team in the big has a glaring deficiency. This is a problem we should have been able to weather.

I think the biggest issue is the underperformance of the Mathieu/Hollins duo. When the season started, I thought that both would need to play at an all-conference level for this team to comfortably make the tournament, given some of the deficiencies we have (particularly on the defensive side) in the front court. Their lack of production across five games (even with all the attention Walker attracts from opposing defenses), and failure to make winning plays for this team in key late game situations, has been huge. Its all about the guards

I think Mathieu/Hollins are quality players, and are critical to the Gophers recovery, but their play has been the one variable I didn't anticipate. I don't think pulling them from the starting line up is really the answer, but Pitino might want to try the following:

1) Even hobbled, Hollins is important to this team. But I'm not sure I foresee major improvements in his performance going forward. I think his usage on the offensive side of the ball probably needs to be reduced, pending some change in his ability to knock down shots. Take the open three by all means, but that is probably about it.

2) The major difference, IMO, between Deandre this year and last year, is his aggressiveness offensively. I think Deandre is much better when he is looking to get to the rim and score, or pulling up from the mid-range. The jump-stop in the lane which leads to the forced pass isn't working. He needs to shoot more, because when he does, he scores it at a pretty decent rate. I liked Deandre's ability to bounce back from poor games last year, and I believe he has the capacity to elevate his game going forward. If we are going to recover, he has to play better, particularly in late game situations (and he proved last year he has the ability to help us finish games).

3) Nate Mason needs to play more. Like 30 minutes a game. And he needs to be more of a focal point of this Gophers offense

Technically yes but I guess the debate is we had a glaring hole at the 4 and Joey wanted yo come home. For what's its worth he's not a bad player. King is like the Nick Pun to of the team. Fans rag on him because he's role player who has to play beyond his ability every game because there's no one else. Making him an easy target

It's not the same as Nick Punto. First King has his strong points and is not as inept at D as Putno was at offense. Second, King filled a void when the Gophers truly had limited alternatives. The Twins could have signed a player superior Punto at any time over multiple years and chose not to. And even when they had suprior players, they played him anyway for some reason only Gardy will ever know.
