Pitino Post Game Press Conference Notes - Joey King Status, Syracuse Prep, Etc.

No big reason in particular. Just thought missing the trip might possibly be part of his punishment since the suspension ends in the middle of the tournament. I'm hoping he does make it though. We need him to get some game time so he is ready when B1G season rolls around.

If Maui was part of the suspension, they wouldn't be calling it a 6 game suspension. He will definitely be there.

Thank you. Is it likely if he doesn't pull it together a bit he will be a candidate for a transfer?

He already redshirted and has plenty of time to gain experience and get better as a Gopher, so no, not unless Pitino pushes him out (highly doubtful).

Or a JC guy, possibly.

Since he already red-shirted, if he transfers to another D-1 school, wouldn't he forfeit a year of eligibility?

And before you go ballistic GIP, I'm not calling for him to transfer. Yet. ;)
Aren't jc's transfers?

it would be nice to have big Mo bang with Dajuan Coleman and Rakeem Christmas

so much for the winner of this game landing Isaiah Whitehead

Yes - he would effectively lose a year of competition eligibility by transferring to a D1 school (unless he and his new school found an argument that touched the NCAA's heart)... one option (and perhaps not a bad one for him) would be to transfer to a strong JUCO program and play a year, then head back to D1 for two years. That way he plays next season (potentially a fair amount) and when he's back at the D1 level he's able to play right away for two years.

While I agree with you that beating the 2-3 Zone, and in particular a zone with impeccable length and familiarity with the defense like Syracuse, you need to cause disruption with dribble drive penetration, I don't think that is the way THIS Gopher team can beat them. The only chance we have of beating Syracuse is if Smith and the Hollins boys get hot and we bomb away from the outside. We do not have the ball handlers to penetrate and play through contact/disruptions to successfully navigate a Syracuse zone. Dre M. is a great ball handler, but I think you need more than that.

We need a Memphis esqu game from Dre Hollins, and a steady game from Austin and the game we recruited Malik for.

I hope I'm wrong, but I also hope I'm right in that we get hot, and we penetrate and blow these suckers out of the water!

Just got cold in the 2nd half + some bonehead mistakes and foul trouble
