Here are my quick notes, as always, typing while they talk.

Richard Pitino

• Very good game obviously, I thought the start was the best part about it, responding to what we talked about the last 1.5 days. I don't want to take away from Coastal Carolina, their defense was good. To come back, with one day prep, without Joey King and Mo Walker was difficult.
• I think these games are tougher to prepare for than a Richmond or Syracuse, we don't have to get them pumped for those. After Coastal, they were very anxious to get on the court.
• Oto and Elliott were tremendous. With Elliott almost getting a triple double. I love the confidence Oto is playing with right now. These are guys that are going to play major minutes. Oto played the 5, which he's never done, with only 1 day to prepare, that shows his basketball IQ.
I probably only watched 3-4 games from last year (to not pre-determine what he saw in the players)
• It seems like our guys didn't want the game to end. They were talking a lot more than I was, that's what I want. When you hear their voices more than me, you know they're growing as a team.
• Every timeout, we kept saying it's 0-0. Ignore the score. They responded pretty well. That was a tough game for me to coach, thinking what position is he going to play? When your backup 4 man, becomes your backup 5 man. Hopefully we can get back to a healthy Joey King on Monday.
• The good thing about Syracuse, that scout never changes, he does the same thing every year, and he does a phenomenal job. He's one of the best in the game. The toughest things about Syracuse is simulating them, their wings are 6'8, 6'9. The biggest thing that we've got to do, here comes all the distractions, it's unbelievable when you get there, you need to fight some issues more mentally than physically, and you have 3 games in 3 days, so you have to be careful on how you handle shoot-arounds, etc. Joey is such a tough kid, he's holding an ice pack to his cheek and say he's feeling great, he doesn't look great. I hope he's playing on Monday.
• 7-3 on loose balls,
• Leading up to Wofford, I haven't talked to my Dad about Syracuse. This is not a knock on Syracuse, they don't change a whole lot, they keep it very simple. It's as consistent as it gets.
• We speak everyday, I'm going to record it for you folks so you can remember (laughing) - on speaking to his Dad.
• I've played Syracuse 7-8 times, they are just always really really good.

Austin Hollins:
• On what they did differently this game - We didn't do anything differently, we just approached differently. We knew we didn't have great energy last game and we had to handle business tonight.*
• Great team defense, we were communicating a little better, and were more active with our hands and forced turnovers
• Getting a big lead is huge. It was a matter of keeping our foot on the gas and not letting up.
• On not having Joey King - We knew that we'd be a little short today, but we made up for it with our energy. Despite not having Joey, we did a great job.

Oto Osenieks
• The fouls got me out if thrum, but I need to be much smarter.
• The mental approach (of being a starter) was the biggest change*
• This time I knew that I was going for a career high
• Setting new career highs, it's a new routine. (Laughing)*

Dre Mathieu
• Coach was on us about playing hard, we watched a lot of film, and guys were not playing as hard as he wanted us to. (last game)
• We've got to stay consistent, keep our intensity up, and learn to play 40 minutes strong.*

Elliott Eliason
• I probably take the most pride in blocks. If you get the momentum from the crowd after a block, it can do great things for you.
• On how he's feeling with playing so many minutes as a big man - Pretty good, I'm giving all credit to the strength and conditioning coach, Shaun Brown.

i am a lot more confident in the chances of us beating Cuse then us getting the axe back this weekend

i was on a cuse board and someone posted that the opening line for this game will only be 4, and a lot of cuse fans feel they could definitely lose the game, they only beat St. Francis by 6 and haven't dominated their non con games as much as we have this season so far, also we have the perfect offense to beat there 2-3 zone with all of our shooters

Thanks GL, you're the best!

Need Oto to pop a few from the high post to loosen up their defense, if they can rush the 3 pt shooters without worrying about the middle it is going to be a tough shooting night for the guards.

I'm not as confident as some of you guys in regards to Syracuse. I still think it will be quite the upset if we can pull of a W.

Same here. Especially without Mo and most likely without Joey.

Either way, coming out of there with two wins would be great.

Syracuse has definitely struggled some this year, but they are extremely long and athletic. They pull that zone out so far, and their length makes the passing lanes very small. I do agree we have a better chance beating Syracuse than getting the Axe though.

Don't leave Maui with a D-I donut

Every Maui Invitational, all 7 Division I teams want to avoid (as the likely worst scenario) one thing:

DO NOT be the only team to leave the island without a Division I win. With Chaminade on the other side of the bracket, it's imperative the Gophers win one of their first two games. Gophers have to get out of there with at least one D-I win, two would be fantastic. Just make sure they don't leave Maui with the D-I donut.

Without Joey King, this game will be almost impossible to win. We need his energy, his defense and his shooting.

If we have a full line up (minus Mo), then I think the key is Dre & Dre breaking down the zone with penetration and dishing to Austin/Oto/Jk/Malik on the outside and dropping to Big E on the inside. We won't break the zone with passing consistently, but I think Dre & Dre and quick enough to get inside in the half court...and of course we need to rebound well and get out on the break and finish.

All that said, I think we lose by 15 and learn a lot of lessons.

So what you're saying is, we need to do the things a good basketball team does?

Lets just say after the 6 years with Tubby, maybe some of our fans don't know what it looks like to break down the 2-3 zone. Lord knows Tubby was confused by it time and again.

One of the weaknesses of Syracuse 2-3 zone is the susceptibility to the weakside lob. The problem is that Syracuse is so long that smaller guards can't see it. Also, if I recall, Rick Sr. used a 1-4 high set against Syracuse and got some really good looks out of it against the 2-3 zone. I'd think Papa Pitino would remind son about the strategy and its effect.

Sorry, I haven't kept up much with 'as the rodent spins' but could someone clue me in as to why Buggs hasn't gotten much playing time?

He's still really, really raw and doesn't seem to have a great grasp on the system

Buggs has looked like a deer in the headlights (he even bounces like a deer when he runs). He has displayed bricks for hands and in short...he may turn into a good player, but it will take a LOT of work on his part to get there.

When do we get Mo back? Isn't his suspension for six games, but does the non-con games counts against it?

Those games better count otherwise there is no reason he shouldnt be out there playing.

Thank you. Is it likely if he doesn't pull it together a bit he will be a candidate for a transfer?

We'll get Mo back for Tuesday's game vs California/Arkansas.

While I agree with you that beating the 2-3 Zone, and in particular a zone with impeccable length and familiarity with the defense like Syracuse, you need to cause disruption with dribble drive penetration, I don't think that is the way THIS Gopher team can beat them. The only chance we have of beating Syracuse is if Smith and the Hollins boys get hot and we bomb away from the outside. We do not have the ball handlers to penetrate and play through contact/disruptions to successfully navigate a Syracuse zone. Dre M. is a great ball handler, but I think you need more than that.

We need a Memphis esqu game from Dre Hollins, and a steady game from Austin and the game we recruited Malik for.

I hope I'm wrong, but I also hope I'm right in that we get hot, and we penetrate and blow these suckers out of the water!

If he transfers we will likely have to replace him with another transfer because our classes are going to get so uneven with all these guys everyone is shipping out of here....

Or a JC guy, possibly.

Since he already red-shirted, if he transfers to another D-1 school, wouldn't he forfeit a year of eligibility?

And before you go ballistic GIP, I'm not calling for him to transfer. Yet. ;)

It would be so satisfying to beat Boeheim...

We'll get Mo back for Tuesday's game vs California/Arkansas.

Are we sure he is making the trip with the team? I had thought it might be a possibility that he may not make the trip and rejoin the team after the tourney.

And why would you think that?

No big reason in particular. Just thought missing the trip might possibly be part of his punishment since the suspension ends in the middle of the tournament. I'm hoping he does make it though. We need him to get some game time so he is ready when B1G season rolls around.

Quote from Pitino via The Pioneer Press. "We support Mo," Pitino said. "We love Mo, can't wait to get him back in Maui. He's going to be a big help to our basketball team." Looks like he'll be in Maui.
