Pitino Post Game on 1500 - doesn't blame rebounding, proud of the way they played

The reffing was horrid. Hammons should have been in foul trouble early. Problem is we have no tough bigs. Both EE and Mo are mobile but neither could match up with Hammons if the refs were going to "let them play."
In all seriousness, little Dre was the most aggressive player in pursuing rebounds. This team desperately needs a rebounder. If only Mbakwe had gotten a 7th year.

Can't remember the name, but there was an old hockey coach who used to say "if you can't beat 'em in an alley, you can't beat 'em on the ice." Seems applicable to the bolded part.

A lot of hockey coaches think fighting is part of the game too.

6'6" 225lb undersized pf Peck had 11 rebounds, 3 on offense. I think Walker could play him in man ok. Or at least I would attempt it. On offense Walker has hit the 12ft jumper and EE was doing it earlier in the year to space them on offense. Remember Peck would be guarding one of them on the other end. I don't like the twin tower look often or against most teams but Purdue is relatively weak without a true pf also. By the way Peck's big off reb on the free throw he had his elbow in the middle of King's shoulder blades and pushed him.

Go Man2Man and I think almost any of the Purdue guards would cause some issues for Mo and or EE having to defend on the perimeter.

Our issue, in my opinion, wasn't as much of not grabbing rebounds, but corralling loose balls. Some of those bricks Purdue tossed up had nothing to do with boxing out and getting a board and more about having strong hands and grabbing a goddamn loose one.

Fine overall game from Austin, dissappointed in his rebounding: 3 in 51 minutes? I like what I saw of McNeil, he seems to have a good feel for the game and he doesnt seem to try and do to much and make big mistakes. Never thought he could run the team in short spurts as he seems to be a natural sg/wing.
When the season started, not having R. Williams or Trevor at pf, we all knew we were less athletic and we were going to have trouble rebounding. We can try but we are going to come up short there against many teams. Smith seems to be boom or bust. When he is hitting 3's he is awesome, when he is off he doesnt do much else.

My biggest frustration with the rebounding was that a lot of them were long rebounds or rebounds that hit the floor once before they were collected. Those are the types of rebounds that we should be able to get even though we are undersized and without a true PF. If we were losing rebounds and put backs at the rim because the other team was simply going over us then I wouldn't be as frustrated. We were decimated on the boards because we simply didn't give as much effort as Purdue.

The rules were changed to make muggings become fouls, right? If that's the case, what the heck were the refs doing last night? Was yesterday some sort of throwback rules night where mugging is a legitimate form of defense and offensive rebounding?

That's the obvious question.

The game continues to get uglier with Rugby continued to allowed to be played on the inside. And then some called fouls turn out to be little or no contact. It's hard to see this as anything more than ineptitude on the part of the officials.

While in theory everything you said there likely works. But if you listen to P, it's not going to happen, he is establishing an identity and a brand of basketball regardless of whether or not he has the players. P doesn't want 2 lumbering giants on the court at once, period. Bottom line is that Joey King or Oto should be able to box out a 6'6" PF to the point of at least drawing a foul.

Bingo.

Coach Pitino said it might work okay for offense but not defense. Who is going to guard the 4? He also said he might try it just to show people why it won't work.

Not with the way the game was called, Peck is pretty muscular, just the way Travis hurt us for Penn St. For Minnesota who hasn't gotten tons of top 100 guys, if you want a face up 4 who can shoot your probably giving up something on defense and rebounding unless you get an under the radar guy like A. White/Iowa.

How about Hammonds foul on miny Dre on one of the first posessions of the game. Dang near threw him out of the gym.

That was the most blatant non call of the night, and maybe the worst I've ever seen. Can't believe no one is talking about it. It was a sign of things to come and shows how bad things got that it's not even being discussed. I wasn't even sure Mathieu was coming back into the game.

I mentioned it in the game thread right after it happened.

Check that, I screamed it because it was such a horrible no call. Hammonds could have easily fouled out twice last night.

I'd have to check the stats, but I would guess (as others have mentioned) a lot of those rebounds came from guards or long rebounds. Not because we were outsized. Mo and EE together doesn't fix that.

Also, good luck spacing the floor and not clogging the lane with 3 starters who can't shoot a 3 consistently and operate best in the lane (Mo, EE, Dre Mathieu). Welcome back to the clogged lane of Tubby ball.

Dre Mathieu is arguably the best 3 pt shooter on the team, he needs to shoot more. He is shooting the highest percentage. A simple look at team stats shows lil Dre at 48% and Austin at 29%. An incredible difference. Another stat that is also not very impressive is Oto at 33%, and King with 32%. I wonder if MO shot from there it he couldn't hit 1 out of 3. Anyway it doesnt matter I hated the twin tower look from Tubby, and he made it worse having Sampson in the middle of the 2-3 who was slightly faster latterally than Iverson, and Iverson was the better rebounder. We probably won't see it. If coach doesn't attempt it in a 3 ot game where we are hurt on the boards it's not gonna happen.
