Here a few comments from his interview with Mike Grimm and Spencer:

• I think the reason we lost the game, more than anything, we got stops and they got loose balls. We've got a disappointed team because they fought their butts off. Joey played 47 minutes, Austin played 51 minutes. We're not going to get too down about this. We're really close, and I'm happy with their effort.
• That's life in a tough conference. If you focus on big picture, I think we're really improving.
• Dre practiced yesterday for us, and it took him a little while to get warmed up, but then he looked really good. He said he was at about 95%.
• On lack of fouls called - I think it was a well officiated game. Both teams were competing hard, tough to officiate.
• The weather had nothing to do with it, especially with a late game.
• I'm proud of their effort, we just need to continue to chip away at it.

Not sure it is a good idea to admit he wasn't paying any attention to the game.

I think he tries hard to keep a positive attitude in the media. I would guess his message to the team is a bit different.

Smart to go with positive words after that loss. The players have to be heartbroken. They played hard, much better on defense. We got ripped off by the refs- but still we had the shots to win it- Smith in the corner, I thought he would drain that. Beat the Hoosiers and go from there.

My dvr ran out..... So I have no clue how this one ended,... What was the final? I saw 2 OTs

I doubt it. They played hard and he knows it. Tomorrow maybe- but yelling at them tonight wouldn't work.

I know he's rejected it out of hand, but tonight screamed to at least try Elliot and Mo at the same time. Especially late in the game when you can sub offense and defense.

For which side of the ball would u use them???

I would have to disagree with Andre being 95%.

DOES Hamonds ever foul??????? The one where he shoved Little Dre and then he got the call!!! Someday
the Gophers will win a close one and win on the road like everyone else is doing!

This.

Hammons got away with murder tonight plain and simple. They let him do whatever he wanted. Shoves, hooks, body bumps - it was an absolute joke. We aren't a physical team at all - and when the refs let Purdue thug it up the whole game while not allowing us to do the same - it was going to be a tough game to win.

Man, a blowout win would be nice just once - my heart can't take much more of these endings...

He also gave Joey King a wicked forearm shiver on a missed free throw toward the end (I can't remember exactly when) and grabbed the very important rebound. He hooked around his defender at least twice with his elbow to score - not getting called for a foul. Big difference. Announcers said he doesn't usually play as much due to foul trouble. Go figure.

I don't normally complain about the officiating, but you are right, Hammons is a bull-in-a-china shop and should have been in foul trouble.

Coach Pitino has had a very positive public persona after each of these three consecutive losses. I've gotten the feeling at times (especially on his coaches show last week) that he's trying to manage public expectations and doesn't know how much more he can get out of this team.

So taking his comments with a grain of salt, the rebounding was PATHETIC tonight. I couldn't even get upset about the horrific officiating that hurt us late in regulation and in the OT's. If this team simply got one or two more rebounds at any point tonight, they win the game. Instead, Purdue got second and third opportunities all night long.

Was Oto hurt? I was screaming for King to be taken out of the game on multiple occasions as his defense was hurting us far more than his offense helped. I wish we could have saved just one of Malik Smith's 3's in the Nebraska game for one of these past two games. DeAndre continues to be the only guy willing/able to make a big play late, but also had some maddening turnovers tonight. Mo Walker went up soft AGAIN tonight in the 2nd OT where his layup would have given us the lead and he also missed the front end of a 1 and 1 to give us the lead in the 2nd OT. So many chances, but it still comes back to the inability to control the defensive boards or get many offensive boards of their own.

Sucks. We had another ball on the rim with a second or two left that didn't roll in. 3300 seconds and we just need that one.

Is that how it ended? We had a shot at the end in the 3rd OT as well?!?!

Comes down to defense and stops, Smith and Dre Hollins going 3 for17 didn't help on the offensive end but they really got good games out of Mathieu, Austin, King, and Walker. Tough to loose such a close game.

They won't make real leaps and bounds til we can address our glaring needs at the PF spot. Coach knows they are missing pieces. If lil Dre & Malik are the TYPE of players he is attracting, I look forward to the future.

What offensive player outside of Hammonds are you scared of that's going to exploit it?

Who do you have playing the wing in the 2-3? EE or Mo?

The answer to your questions would be, EVERYONE in that situation. If you thought them getting into the middle of our defense was a problem with slightly athletic Oto and Joey on the wing, wait until you throw our giants on the wing.... Also you would have to throw out the whole idea of our wings "playing up" and extending the defense, which has been a major issue since we lack the length/athleticism on one side to accomplish this.

Go Man2Man and I think almost any of the Purdue guards would cause some issues for Mo and or EE having to defend on the perimeter.

Our issue, in my opinion, wasn't as much of not grabbing rebounds, but corralling loose balls. Some of those bricks Purdue tossed up had nothing to do with boxing out and getting a board and more about having strong hands and grabbing a goddamn loose one.

I absolutely hate to talk about officiating because usually it at least somewhat evens out over the course of a game or a season. The problem I have, though - in last night's game as well as through the entire season - is how systematic it's been. I'm not calling conspiracy, but at the same time I'm at a loss to explain some of the things I'm seeing, including and especially the amount of contact DeAndre is absorbing without getting rewarded with calls. My wife is usually not an officiating complainer, but she was all over it last night, with both Little Dre and Big Mo taking a pounding - and then on the other end of the court, calls being made with little or no contact.

I consider myself an objective observer and will remark out loud whenever the Gophers get a bad call in their favor. I just never remember being so frustrated about constant, systematic floor tilting that turns out to be enough to decide games. The Gophers did not set the world on fire last night, but you don't have to in order to beat a bottom-feeding Purdue team. Did they play well enough to win? I would say yes if you call the game more evenly and consistently and by the rules. This team is a hair away from being 6-4 rather than 4-6, and the common thread in the two swing losses is Mathieu getting hammered repeatedly. Imagine if he'd gotten the same treatment as Drew Crawford.

I'm starting to think the games would be more fair if the players called their own fouls. I'm only joking. When we play IU Saturday I'm guessing there will be an extreme amount of fouls and free throws.

The giant chasm this team has at the four spot is the difference between being a 6 or 7 seed and being in the NIT. The officials haven't been doing us any favors, but we were screwed by the NCAA long before the B1G refs started in on us.

I'd be a lot more upset about the officiating if I wasn't too busy being upset about how many balls we lost that hit our players in the hands.

Also, I posed this issue elsewhere, but I think it got buried in general complaining about the loss. Why didn't we try to go 2 for 1 at the end of 3OT. I feel like we just gave away a free possession.

The reffing was horrid. Hammons should have been in foul trouble early. Problem is we have no tough bigs. Both EE and Mo are mobile but neither could match up with Hammons if the refs were going to "let them play."

In all seriousness, little Dre was the most aggressive player in pursuing rebounds. This team desperately needs a rebounder. If only Mbakwe had gotten a 7th year.

THIS!

Said it numerous times through out the game. Too much swatting, not enough grabbing.
