PiPress: 'Recruiting is recruiting,' Gophers coach Jerry Kill says

Miami of Ohio is known as the "cradle of coaching..." Woody Hayes, Bo Schembeckler, Ara Parasegian, Paul Brown and other great coaches served as coaches there along their way to fame and greatness.

The defensive struggle

Kill had unofficial recruits come in where 5 of 7 were on the defensive side of the ball. About time a coach took that side of the ball seriously. If he does this regularly it should bode well for the Gophs.

Brewster focused on defense much more than he did on offense. Having a commitment to one or the other doesn't prove anything.

actually, no one is saying that recruiting is not important. what people are saying is that star-gazing is not going to make for a good football team.

No one? You're joking, right?

There's multiple threads full that very sentiment.

"But, but, but, Kill's a COACH! We don't NEED to recruit!"

I think what (most) of the sentiments you're talking about are meant more like "If Kill can COACH the guys we have to noticeable improvements, it will gradually become easier to recruit, and then easier to win, and then, again, easier to recruit." Everyone knows you need players to reach the highest levels, but there's room for debate on the best way to get those players, and the best types of players to get.

No, there aren't. No one is saying that recruiting isn't important. What is being said is that coaching is more important than recruiting. A good coach can take marginal talent and get decent results. But a bad coach can take good talent and get terrible results. What there is is a lot of people insisting that Kill won't be able to recruit.

So if "a good coach can take marginal talent and get decent results" isn't that saying recruiting isn't important?

In fact, you just said 'recruiting isn't important.'

I most certainly did not. I said that you can get better results with good coaching and poor recruiting than you can get with poor coaching and good recruiting. Good coaching and good recruiting. I did not say that a good coach is going to get FANTASTIC (or tremendous, if you prefer) results with marginal talent.

You'll get the best results with good coaching and good recruiting. You'll get the next best with good coaching and marginal recruiting. After that is bad coaching and good recruiting. Worst of all is bad coaching and bad recruiting.

We've just seen the results of having a bad coach who could recruit. Winning is the best recruiter of all. Get some wins, and Kill will have no problem recruiting.

I have always been a "size of the dog in the fight" over a "size of the fight in the dog" guy. A team full of "Rudys" makes for a great inspirational movie, but that isn't going to win you championships. You need, as Jerry Burns used to say, the "big knockers."

At the same time, if one can't teach a "dog" of any size not to metaphorically crap all over the house, the size and the ability of the dog isn't going to matter a whole lot. You are going to have a crappy situation.
